Just a question - have any BigFooty members had any experience (or their family/friends) with AFL Name a Game/Sports delivered? Are they generally pretty punctual in getting matches out to you? Is it possible to order the games and collect them from their offices in person?

Would be much appreciated.

Additionally, are there any other reliable shops/companies through which you can order DVDs/videos of matches? Thanks in advance.

I can't comment on name a game or sports delivered's puncutality, but I have heard from an AFL club that channel 7 in all their wisdom taped over alot of their archived games when they initially lost the TV rights. So anyone looking for games that either name a game or sports delivered don't stock (which is not alot prior to 1990) don't bother with Channel 7. If anyone can confirm this and if true I would love to know was the brainiac was that made the decision?

It can take anywhere between one to four months to receive AFL Name a Game DVDs. I've purchased a couple from them. One of them took about six weeks, and the other 3/4 months. There's a similar thread on the Bulldogs board with posters commenting on delays they have, or are, experiencing with them.

Thanks mate. I have posted in that thread, but thought I'd try and net a wider audience.

Would be lovely if FoxFooty returned, with FoxFooty Extra, simply dedicated to replay after replay.

I've got one. Came pretty much on time. Shocking disk though.
Disk 1 would not play and would keep stopping at the same point
Disk 2 wouldn't even read in my DVD Player!
Had to put them on to the computer and on another disk. Worked fine, but I shouldn't have to do that, especially considering the price of it

Around 35 bucks a game......no thanks

But ive got the same problem.. going to America for 3 months in a couple of weeks and want to bring a heap of afl games to watch on my laptop/psp.

The best way ive come up with is buying an external hardrive ($100) and raping my download limit each month... which gets me like 6 games a month...

this is true in essence.

Just have a look at the list of games that Name A Game offer on their catalogue.

Everything from 1995 onwards they have copied and there is very little before that.

They don't even have some of the finals games from the 1980's and practically nothing from the 70's.

Fitzroy vs Essendon -elimination final 1981 - ba-bow!

Collingwood vs Fitzroy - 1st semi final 1981 - ba-bow!

carlton vs Hawthorn - 2nd semi 1986 - ba-bow!

carlton vs Sydney - qualifyting final 1986 - ba-bow!

and the list goes on and on... none of those games exist anymore.

Without Channel 2's program of The Winners very little footage from the 1980's would have survived.

I am suprised that the AFL didn't insist or at the very least request a copy of every game that channel 7/channel 2 ever broadcast. Name a game seems like a bit of a scam given the comments above. There would be hundreds if not thousands of hours of footage of famous games lost to history because of a lack of foresight.

How many people actually got to watch footy at the local grounds? I was fortunate enough to see footy at all but a few grounds but for those that didn't this link to the past is all but gone. To me that is very sad.

Terrible, terrible, terrible.

I ordered 6 two years back.

Most took a couple of months to come. They came in fits n starts.

2 were faulty and had to be returned.

1 never arrived: pies vs. dogs 1990.

Very thankful that Torrents and youtube have emerged since then.

I ordered 20 back in Feb of this year, they were of odds and ends games that i didnt have between 1987-1995......was told in dribs and drabs "ohh this isnt available anymore" then a few weeks later got another email saying "3 games needed to be remastered" and it would take another 6 weeks.....it didnt,so 6 weeks after they were said to be ready.they said ohh "we are still missing some games that havnt arrived from being remastered!!!" These were games on their list!!!
Finally.....they were all ready...3 weeks ago,all up 8 months......8 dont exist so it was 12 all up......was told they are ready to be mailed.....i said "no chance of that,im coming in to pick them up"

Well - it was in a shoe box office in Cremorne - Richmond....a 20 year old uni student seems to be running it with no real interest in AFL.....just filling in time i think.....they have dvds scattered all over the place in no order - it was terrible.
Anyway....i dont need them anymore as they were the last of games i was missing,so i dont need that mob again.....torrents & you tube are not full games and the quality is poor....but at least you see some footage i suppose.

I've ordered many Games from them and I've never had a problem. I only once had a very, very minor problem when I ordered a Game and it didn't arrive when it was supposed to.
I then contacted them and it arrived the very next day! :):thumbsu:
They are quite expensive, but they are worth it. The only problem is the Tortoise Post, which has nothing to do with the Company that makes them. Quite often, they take a pathetic 1-2 weeks to arrive.
I've even picked one up before from their Offices when I dropped into Melbourne one day. However, if you want to pick them up, it can only be one from the Current Year, because they must Order ones in that are from previous years.
Apart from that, I've never had a problem with them! :thumbsu:

I recently ordered the 05 qtr final from sportsdelivered. Came in ten working days and I have had no probs.:thumbsu:. would order again I think
To the earlier posters who commented on the fact Channel 7 have taped over many of the early games and particularly those from the 80s I believe that storage issues, the cost of the tapes and also perhaps a lack of tapes contributed to this. It appears to be standard practice worldwide as I read many "classic" british comedies from the early days have been lost. I also recently read in my GF's girlie mags that most of the early episodes of Neighbours also suffered the same fate with Channel 10 taping over them rather than keeping for posterity

That is all very well and good - but the minimum requirement (And i mean minimum) requirement of Channel 7 as custodians of the game was to keep records of the finals matches.

They may not have had space or enough tapes to keep the home and away matches - but surely they had room for finals matches. It is criminal that you cannot watch the 1986 2nd semi, the 1982-3 finals series etc.

Torrent are full games and generally good quality considering the price:thumbsu:

It is criminal but I suspect that the general unprofessional manner of the Australian TV Networks probably contributed to this and would be a root cause to these games going missing. Tapes mis-labelled, etc, etc. Of course if the AFL was run as well THEN as NOW we wouldn't have this problem but in the mid to late 80s Channel 7 probably didn't give a stuff or think anyone may want to watch these games down the track, or indeed care if anyone did. Also it was run by Holmes a Court, Murdoch and Skase - All desperate to bleed the network for their marble mansions and save cash wherever possible to line their own pockets. As if that unholy trio would Give a rats.
ideally, the AFL would have bought the tapes and then kept them as part of their own records. The only hope for some of these games would be that they're hiding in the archives hiding in a box

Sports Delivered had an affiliate program we used to run ads for. Strangely they cancelled it without ever telling me. I only found out when I clicked their link on BF here and it was broken. No response to emails asking about it.

Pretty much a monopoly/cash cow for the owner I think. No competition means no need to improve service.

AFL should open it up to competition.

You are right about all these games. I have been wanting to gain all these myself as I seek to gain more knowledge of 1980s footy than grand finals can provide. Their coverage of the early 1990s, as I will show below, is erratic too.

Just watching Carlton's amazing defensive display against the Swans in Round 19 of 1987 shows that more effort must be put into preserving what footage exists of home-and-away games from that era. One person said they had the full game of Footscray v St. Kilda, Round 13, 1978 (where the Bulldogs kicked a record score with Kelvin Templeton and Ian Dunstan kicking 22.12 between them) but would not think of giving it for public use. For such an amazing game, I must call that mean, especially since it is nine years older than than the oldest official footage of a home-and-away game! There are also no home-and away games from 1988 or the first fifteen round of 1990, and only one from 1989.

I for one would love to see such an amazing performance as the Footscray pair produced in full, and I wonder what 7TWO's Flashback Classics would think of the idea?!

I have talked to Name a Game a bit about trying to acquire some really important home-and-away games like:

  • Fitzroy v North Melbourne, Round 13, 1983 - where the Lions beat North, who were on top of the ladder, by 150 points with Rendell, who had not kicked a goal in his previous eighteen games, kicking eight, and Conlan, held to one kick in the first half, seven afterwards
  • Carlton v North Melbourne
  • Footscray v Melbourne
    • both from Round 22, 1987. This was a thrilling round where, against a brilliant effort from North, the seemingly invincible Blues held top spot thanks to Kernahan, and Melbourne mde the finals for the first time since 1964.
  • West Coast v Melbourne, Round 1, 1991 - the Demons were held to one behind in the first half by a champion defence that showed itself capable of holding the amazing Geelong goal machine of 1992.
  • North Melbourne v Sydney, Round 6, 1991 - the Swans kicked 19.6 in the first half but, as a result of Chandler tagging Williams, did not score after halfway through the third term and North won easily.
    • (The second quarter's 116-point aggregate is the second highest for any quarter)
  • Footscray v Carlton, Round 11, 1991 - the Blues were nearly held goalless on a flooded ground.
  • West Coast v Geelong, Round 4, 1992 - the one time Geelong mastered the the Eagles' champion backline.
  • Essendon v Melbourne, Round 6, 1992 - the greatest three-quarter-time comeback to that point.

That is all very well and good - but the minimum requirement (And i mean minimum) requirement of Channel 7 as custodians of the game was to keep records of the finals matches.

I agree very much. Even with home-and-away games, there are at least a few they should have kept, like Fitzroy's sensational thrashing of North Melbourne in a top-of-the-table clash in Round 13 of 1983. It would be wonderful for the football historian to be able to see what really happened in that top-of-the-table clash, rather than having to dig up newspapers for an idea!

More than that, the games they have kept are not necessarily the most valuable or interesting: it's just a matter of luck about what was kept.

I ordered from them quite a bit a few years ago (in the days of VHS) and they always seemed alright to me. I was buying from England so it took about a month for them to turn up and the quality of the tapes were good. The only thing I could say is I think they are a bit over priced.
