Fixture Afl stuff up 2023 finals fixture

I imagine Brisbane's prelim would be early enough so that the visiting team (if they were to win) can return to Melbourne that night.
Yeah I feel like it will either be 3.20pm or 4.35pm Saturday. Broncos being scheduled Saturday night (7.50pm KO) must have thrown a spanner in the works as well. NRL usually schedule the higher ranking home.prelim team second so everyone was expecting Broncos to be Friday.

Wouldn't rule out us being Friday night either, just to allow Port or GWS a seven day break.

Don't think they have stuffed up anything.

Melbourne get an 8 day break. Carlton 7 day break. Port and GWS get 7 days.

Brisbane should host preliminary Friday night. Means a 7 day break for either Melbourne or Carlton. Also means they don't clash with the Broncos on Saturday.

Collingwood should host the Saturday preliminary. So Port or GWS get 7 days.
I reckon it will be a twilight preliminary final to give just that bit more recovery with Port or GWS a chance to return to Adelaide or Sydney that evening if they win. If the Pies win they are already home so don't think it disadvantages them too much.

So you're saying the highest ranked team gets a shorter break into the GF?

Surely the most sensible approach will to have both Preliminary finals on the Saturday.

But you’ll not be able to please everyone

It's all but confirmed:
Friday 7.50pm Collingwood v Port/GWS (MCG)
Saturday 4.35pm Brisbane Lions v Carl/Melb (Gabba)

Why is it so important to play a twilight prelim final so the team can fly home but that same rule doesn’t apply for semis with GWS?
Also why wouldn't the port v giants game be the Friday night so they get a 7 day break? It's not as if either is disadvantaged by both having a 6 day break this week.
The AFL can be very confusing in their logic.

So Port/GWS have a 6 day break but Melb/Carl get an 8 day break heading into the Prelim?

Coll v Port/GWS Saturday.
Bris v Melb/Carl Friday

Ensures both sides of the fixture head into the prelim on a 7 day break and then the winner of the Coll prelim have a 7 day break into the GF and winner of the Bris have 8 days but have to travel to Melbourne for the GF so lose a days prep in travel anyway.

Essentially all teams are square on 7 days either side of the prelim and GF this way.

Collingwood Friday
Brisbane Saturday Twilight

We finished top so get the greater lead into a possible GF. Simple.

It's happened before, and it really shouldn't be that big of a deal.

Collingwood are already getting the home ground advantage on GF day if they make it through.

So Port/GWS have a 6 day break but Melb/Carl get an 8 day break heading into the Prelim?
What's wrong with this? A 6 day break is fine, happens many times throughout the season and all teams have just had a bye before finals anyway.
Port can't complain after losing their QF and GWS finished 7th so neither side is in a position to be given advantages.

Collingwood deserve the Friday night prelim as their reward for finishing first.
That trumps giving Port or GWS a 7 day break into a prelim.

The AFL needs to incentivise the minor premiers.
You MCG clubs get enough leg ups.
Our prize for finishing top are away games.
The AFL does what they want.

Top club has got the Friday night match for years now. It's kind of a reward for finishing in the highest position.

Exact same situation happened in 2018. Richmond being the top club got the Friday night match against a Collingwood side coming off a 6 day break. Similarly Melbourne got an 8 day break that year.

Collingwood vs Port/GWS almost a certainty to be the Friday night match based on previous years.
