North Melbourne
I have created a ladder/time line showing where every team places in regard to how long they have been wearing their current design from the first year they wore it. Many teams have varied their designs since the initial year but then returned to their current designs.

Thanks to Mero & footyjumpers.com for the info.

Year

1. Ess 1875
2. Geel 1876
3. NM 1886
4. Coll 1892
5. WB 1901
6. Carl 1909
7. Rich 1914
8. St.K 1923
9. Melb 1935
10.Haw 1950
11.Syd 1987
12.Adel 1991
13.WC 1995
14.Bris 1997
15.Port 2010
16.Frem 2011
17.GC 2011
18.GWS 2012

Notes:
Referring to home jumper in all instances.
Carl: Monogram has changed but not overall design
Rich: Stripe facing opposite way 1914-1918
St.K: Vertical stripe from 1893 – 1919 but not tri-panel
Melb: Red vee from 1919–1924 but not full yoke
WC: Royal blue & EAGLES font from 1987

Years didn't wear current design:
NM 1908 - 1932
WB 1935, 1975-2011
St.K 1997 – 2001 Worn as away jumper
Bris 2010 - 2014 Paddle Pop monstrosity I'm not counting
WC 2000 – 2015

Interesting Note: NM actually wore blue & white hoops from 1874-1885 before Geelong first did in 1876. So 2 years earlier. Both wore hoops from 1878 to 1885 when both in VFA (NM as Hotham). So I wonder what they actually did wear against each other in those 10 years. North obviously changed to vertical stripes eventually.

Points for discussion:
  • Should St.Kilda be classified as first wearing design from 1893 even though not tri-panel. This jumper is pretty much their current away jumper.

  • Should Melbourne be classified as wearing current design from 1919 although as red vee not yoke?

  • Should WC be classified as wearing current design from 1987 although with royal blue instead of navy & EAGLES word

  • Could argue Bris/Fitz first wore Lion design in 1968. Lion was above heart on chest. FFC monogram in it's place obviously.

The following poster might answer the NM/Geel clash issue. If someone can work out which uniform is Norths/Hothams & which is Geel as footyjumpers.com has both teams in horizontal stripes that year. Although the lighter colour blue is leading me to believe this in NM.

Don't agree with Collingwood. Collingwood's design was fundamentally changed in 2001 when they went from predominately white jumper to a predominately black jumper.
As long as the jumper is much the same design ie. b&w vertical stripes I have counted this as still the same jumper. But I do understand what your saying.

By the Collingwood logic, the Eagles jumper should be listed as 1987 - same basic design with wings, simple reversal of colours...exactly the same principle...

Which I reject anyway, too. Collingwood had a different jumper before 2001, simple as that. Go back to the old days, and the number of stripes differed - this is a fundamental difference. The Saints tri panel is when that one started - the clash jumper is stripes. The current Lions jumper started in 1997 and never appeared in any incarnation before that. Melbourne - a V is not a yoke. And the Eagles had either a different logo or a different colour or both before this year even when they did have the same basic idea - it needs to be considered in the same light as the Lions, because FFC is not a Lion, and the two bird designs are completely different, totally different logos...

You do need to be more picky on these things...! Carlton's font change is an acceptable "all in" inclusion, but everything else listed contains significant differences...

Coll/WC not exactly same principle as Collingwoods colours have always been the same. Although that's why I have WCE original year of wearing current design up for discussion. The design is pretty much the same but colours different. I classify the Eagle head design change in same vein as Carlton font change. An 'all in' inclusion as you said. I don't classify number of stripes ie. Collingwood/North/Haw as being fundamentally different design change as the number of stripes on each design has changed numerous times over the years both increasing and decreasing. Same as Ess/Rich stripe width has varied over years but same design.

The players names and initial of the team are listed around the sides.
1. J. Cordner (Sandhurst -Bendigo), 2. J. Shaw (Hotham-North), 3. A. McIntyre (Melbourne), 4. A. Alexander (Williamswtown), 5. A. Shearwood (Fitzroy), 6. S. Elms (South Melbourne), 7. G. Smith (Carlton), 8. A. B. Berry (Ballarat), 9. J. Lyons (South Ballarat), 10. J. Barwise (Hotham), 11. W. Jones (Melbourne), 12. E. Cherry (Williamstown), 13. P. G. McShane (Fitzroy), 14. J. Young (South Melbourne), 15. J. Baker (Carlton), 16. M.T. Robinson (Ballarat), 17. J. Worrall (South Ballarat), 18. G. A. Miller (B - Bendigo?)
Individual portraits. D. Sebire (Essendon) & J. R. Lawler (Essendon)
Geelong do not appear to be represented in the Coulthard poster.
I'm not sure about the others, but the two Essendon players also played for Carlton, Coulthard's club, so perhaps they are there for that reason.

If you get a chance, read Wikipedia about the life of George Coulthard.

It's somewhat open to interpretation , I'd have:
Adel -1991
Bris - 2015 (even if you go back to pre-Paddlepop, the back was different
Carl -1909 (first year with a monogram, changes to that have been pretty slight)
Coll - 2001
Ess - 1911 (straight sash doesn't count, first year going in current direction)
Freo - 2011
Haw - 2013 (number panel removed) or 2006 if you don't count that (striped added to back)
Melb - 1987 (changed back to navy)
NM -1974 (had more stripes) (NOTE: Bar R8 1995)
Port - 2010
Rich - 2005 (sash on back returned)
St K - 2002
Syd - 1992
WCE - 2016
WB - 2012

So Carlton longest running, closely followed by Essendon.

Collingwood changed their design in 2001 to incorporate a mainly black back. That has to count as changing the design because it's also caused a lot of need for clash guernseys over the years.

But regardless, going by your own logic, they changed their design in 1924-1927 to have two bars of black (the braces) which would count as a change as it looks significantly different to previous designs

Thanks Mero for the info on the players in the poster & on George Coulthard. I would really like to get your thoughts on when you believe teams started wearing their current designs.

I haven't been fussed so much with sash going in different direction, monograms/logos changing or what the backs of jumpers may have looked like. As long as the basic design principles have stayed much the same I have counted this as continuously wearing the same design/jumper.

This is the FJGD board, this stuff is fussed about daily :p

What about like, 100% unchanged?

As in, a player could wear a jumper from the last time it was changed, and in 2016 you wouldn't notice a difference. Even the pedants on here wouldn't.

I would say the Bulldogs would win that.

OK here's an updated table/ladder with when clubs first wore their current colours. Possibly less debate over this one but there are still points up for discussion.

Did Brisbane start wearing Maroon & Gold from 1987 or should they be classified as wearing current maroon, gold & blue from merger in 1997. Note: Fitzroy first wore maroon & chamois (kind of like yellow) way back in 1883.

West Coast initially wore Royal Blue & Yellow in 1987. Didn't introduce navy until 1995.

WB/Footscray wore blue and white hoops from 1883 but did have red cap. Should this be classifed as current colours?

Port obviously added teal when entered AFL in 1997. Is this the start of their current colours?

Here's my opinions on this:

Maroon, gold and blue are the Brisbane Lions' colours, so..

1987's probably fair.

Red = Bulldogs' colours.

Port obviously added teal when entered AFL in 1997. Is this the start of their current colours?
Yep, 1997.

From 2006-2015 we (Crows) didn't have the full hoops go around at the bottom.. we had a navy side panel. we returned to the full hoops design that we wore from 1991-05 this year.

Port Power are a new club that were established in 95 and entered the comp in 97... the port Adelaide magpies (the real port Adelaide) are a different story.

The way I see it, the same players from Port Adelaide's 1996 SANFL premiership side still played in the 1997 AFL competition. So they are (begrudgingly) one club.
