Shouldn't the 3 strikes rule apply here?
What if players come forward isn't there a loophole - like what happened with some Collingwood players recently?
yes the weapon and his witchdoctor mate should be given life bans from sport, and maybe the club should cop some grief for employing them, but honestly why should the players be penalised when its pretty likely none of them knew what they were being given?

Wrong sort of drug dude...

The self-reporting loophole is only for certain Cwood undesirables after a night/morning sesh at Revy...;)

It's for the drugs that won't improve anything other than your ability to carve up a dance floor or speak shit to a stranger for a few hours, two things WADA/ASADA care very little about.

Nice try with the alias McVeigh, you're not fooling anyone.

So what does this Danke bloke do if it turns out his work was all above board? The crappy paper in Melbourne has pretty much ensured he'll never work again. Can you sue a 'journalist' for hypothesizing on a hypothesis?

Maybe our friend down at St Kilda Sam Gilbert can answer this one ;)

Caro article;

The use of the term Fairfax media is interesting by the chief AFL writer for Fairfax.
Sounds like she is basing it on info provided by another person rather than first hand knowledge.
So assuming it is correct, a leak provided to a journo covering another sport or an investigative team perhaps?

Its a branding exercise. All Fairfax publications have been doing it since October

I just cant work all this stuff out...when i was a spotty teen having wet dreams my Aunty Doris told me that hormones were a rare gift and not to worry about it. So the way i see it you could only be effingdum to try and make a hormone by paying for it.

Hird was under pressure, he knew Essendon supporters are impatient and want results.
They are an unrealistic bunch.

Just ask Matty Knights.

Now Sir James, captain clean skin, king dingaling is all but unemployed.
And how the hell is Bomber going to lie his way out of this one?

Someone pointed out to me that Vegas held something like $76m on the SuperBowl. Gives you an idea of how disproportionate that amount of money wagered on an A-League game is.

The Vegas amount would be based on what people in Vegas at the time wagered. You can gamble all across the USA these days so its 2 or 3 million people potentially wagering in Vegas vs 7 or 8 million people potentially in Hong Kong. Still a surprising figure though for an A League game, but then again we are part of Asia as we are always told.

EMMA ALBERICI, PRESENTER: Joining us now from London is Chris Eaton, the director of sport integrity at the International Centre for Sports Security, a former officer with the Australian Federal Police.

He was also the head of security at FIFA - soccer's world governing body.

Welcome, Chris Eaton, and thanks for joining Lateline.
......

EMMA ALBERICI: Are they in the countries where the fraud ... where the sport is being played?

CHRIS EATON: Well they have to be really. Some of them do anyway.

But for the most part the betting fraud is committed offshore from Australia anyway. The vast majority of the betting fraud is committed in south-east Asia, Manilla, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, et cetera. They are transacting billions of dollars on a weekly basis on sport, including on Australian sports.

........

EMMA ALBERICI: In Hong Kong I understand that on one particular weekend more money was wagered on an A-League soccer match, an Australian soccer match than on a British major league soccer match?

CHRIS EATON: Premier League. The Premier League one of the most high profile match, Manchester United versus Manchester City, one ... a betting organisation in Hong Kong took $42 million on that match, they took $49 million on the A-League match, so it took more.

And the reason for that is because that match was played when people were home and could watch it. I told you before they gamble while the match is actually in play. So they need to watch it and they enjoy watching it. They couldn't watch the Manchester United match because it was in their deep nighttime.

I have reservations about your Aunty Doris, no disrespect intended.

Sure, but the people in Vegas are betting on the SuperBowl, and those in Hong Kong are betting on a game that essentially no-one cares about unless they let off some flares and break some seats.

Here's a theory about why Essendon "called for an investigation" purely speculative of course.

AD was briefed by the commission the details of the full report including the team on p17, some time prior to the press conference...I would say a few days at least eg last Thursday.
He calls an emergency meeting with his spin people who say we'd better get on the front foot and somehow do something to make this look better than it will before the press conference.

On Monday morning the Essendon people are briefed and told to call asada quick smart and ask for an investigation. They appear ashen faced as they had literally just found out and made the phone call to asada.

Afl and Essendon spin doctors have damage control measures started prior to the press conference. Essendon by approaching asada can ask for leniency in any potential penalties should they be found to have a problem.

Sounds about right.

I will say there are going to be an awful amount of embarrased posters who over-reached on this. They must thank goodness for the anonymity of the interwebs.

Others in the media should hang their heads in shame. There is nothing wrong with reporting the story, which was significant. However to confuse opinion and 'what ifs' with fact is simply poor.
