every time I look at the list turnover, contracts situation and potentially 4 x first rounders this year, I'm thinking something like pick 8 will be traded for a future 1st to either Port or Melbourne. They have a short hand list and a diabolical trade hand this year. We have contracts rolling off in 2026 that are unlikely to be filled and we still need some flexibility to keep a couple of players on 1 year contracts while the turnover happens IMO.

Agree and probably a wise move. Probably rather deathride Melbourne again though, or Carlton.
Port only played a prelim last year and I don't think they'll have lost too many from this year. They could bounce again.

What do you mean by long term planning? 3+ years?

I would say none of those guys would be in the long term planning, unless they suddenly show something that they haven't already. Maybe Tsatas, Edwards or McMahon if they have a breakout year. I'd add some others to the list as well like Perkins & Hobbs.

that's what I was referring to. The guys I listed aren't going to be in the 3+ year planning of the club.

I think Rosa’s approach is just to build 2 competent balanced football teams within the 46 list spots.

Should be just about there after this offseason’s turnover.

Then next offseason will be more about optimisation and timelines

Edit: Rosa has also had some luck that thanks to firstly bid matching Kako and now needing Draper compo there’s really been only 1 viable list building path forward which has made it an easier sell to essendons money people

Hard to know. Of your list I’d suspect Jones, Tsatsas and Blackison have a good chance at being here.

this year is the hard cut. I’d bet all of

Merrett Sheil, Hobbs Setterfield Guelfi, Gresham, Laverde, Guelfi and Perkins won’t be here post trade week and Cox if his concussion issues continue.

That’s basically a 30% list turnover in 1 season.

Beyond that it’s hard to know depends on depth, who wins competition for spots and if we start to rise fast.


I’d say Goldy, one of Bryan/Viggo are gone then it’s the McKay Ridley Redman Parish McGrath Wright group next to be moved on
