cricket,
well he didn't have a huge impact yesterday but he most certainly didn't do anything wrong either.
if he dosent keep his spot for the rest of the year then I will eat my hat. I have absolutely no faith in those di**ck heads called selectors so I can only hope the can see he is a complete like for like with pertrenko.in fact they are just about responsible for us not playing in a grand final with their selection of an unfit petrenko especially when riley offers a whole lot more than petreko. his tackeling is excellent, his field kicking is really good, his marking ability is good, his speed is good and his set shots for goal good as well.also taking into account that it was his first game back and had to adjust to the speed rather quickly I think he aquitted himself rather well. so all in all selectors doyourselves a favour put riley and lyons in the team and put petrenko up for trade.

Your gonna at your hat if he doesn't play every game?

Would you like sauce with it?

I thought he was ok yesterday and doesn't deserve to be dropped, but the way the selectors have been going, that statement you made is awfully brave

We need to cut out this BS of getting young guys in for 1,2 or 3 games and give them at least 5 to show their wares

Some people are so ridiculously blinded by bias. If Petrenko had a 14 touch 0 tackle 1 goal game, 90% of posters would be raving about how sh*t Petrenko is and how stupid the selectors are. I want to qualify this by saying I really like Riley. I love the way he goes about it at Sturt. As Glenno said, he was passable. Not good. Passable. He isn't a good mark above his head or a good crumber, and he isn't a particularly good field kick. He seems to have cleaned up his disposal since the last time he played but it certainly isn't a strength yet. I hope he gets more of a chance, but his real strengths are clearances and contested situations. I don't think he offers enough up forward to make it as a small forward, and I would have thought Lyons, Smith, and Grigg would all be ahead of him in terms of earning a real spot in the midfield rotation.

I really do think that a healthy Pets offers more than Riley. Given how slow we are as a team, the fact that Petrenko is far faster than Riley puts him ahead IMO.

I understand what your saying. I think the difference is Pets had 12 months to nail that spot. That was Riley's first 4 quarter crack at it

Fair point. I really do hope he gets a solid crack at it and keeps his spot. But at the moment if he's keeping Lyon or Grigg out then ultimately we wouldn't lose much rotating them through the forward line instead of him.

Why not both?

but for srsly now. Our team is lacking dedication and ferocity at the contest. Riley and Pets both in would go a long way to fixing that.

You do realise that Pets is injured? Pets has nailed that spot and is selected there every single week when he's available.

Riley isn't a bad player.. it's just that we have about 30 others who are better than him.

If we want a young midfielder, then he's behind Grigg, Kerridge (ok - not on current form), Lyons and Crouch. I think Grigg & Lyons both have more to offer than Riley - as does Kerridge when he's in form. We can only select 22 players each week and 30 doesn't go into 22.

But he shouldn't because he isn't good enough at performing the offensive skills a forward needs in the AFL.

And as long as he is selected without question, the poorer our side will be. We need to stop having the selection philosophy that best 22 players cone in, no questions asked.

If they are not good enough, they go out and we find someone who is.

I'd say Pets has far from nailed it. He's done well enough to be the first picked there, but not enough to put it beyond doubt. If Riley can put some good games forward, Petrenko might find himself having to fight his way back in.

Petrenko is an important player to our team - when fit. Unfortunately the club has done neither him nor the team a good service by playing him injured (including last year's finals).

However, Pets has not put his 1st team selection beyond doubt, just as Riley hasn't either ... but he should be give a decent string of games to put forward his cause. I'm not convinced he has enough weapons to his game, but happy to be proven wrong.

If Grigg, Kerrdige & Lyons are in front of him, Riley wouldn't have played on the weekend.
Give the guy some credit for his first game of the year, and for looking the part and not some deer in the headlights.
Offers alot more than plenty of others on our list at the moment.
Some of the criticisms of him seem laughable and I wonder if people really watch the game or just look at Champion Data for their game info

That's the position I've held for the last 2 years or more - that Pets was only a bookmark, waiting for a real player to replace him. Riley is not that player.

Maybe, I guess though the philosophy is that it is worth giving him a few games to see what he brings. What he did yesterday wasn't enough to make a call either way on him but it would be good, considering where we are on the ladder, to see where some of our young fringe players are at.

At present, we can afford to keep him in the side whilst leaving Jaensch at Sturt, if Pets is coming straight back in

Correct.

Some on this board have the expectation that a young player should come in & dominate from game 1. They need to be given a decent run of games to put their skills on display, preferably after some decent SANFL form.

Whilst I don't think Reilly has the weapons to make it at AFL level, he need to be given a fair go to properly judge him. It is way too early to write him off & I'm happy to be proven wrong in my early judgement call.

Heaps of negativity on here. I thought he was/is great. Love the way he hits the footy/man. Sure there's some stuff to work on but shit he doesnt back down. Puts the efforts of some of our other blokes to shame.

Guys like Reilly can set a tone in a game. We deperately need a garbage man like him IMO.

Yikes too much Reilly in this thread, come on people. I too think he showed a fair bit and deserves to have a good crack at it over the next few weeks. If he can repeat/improve slightly I would keep him and bring Pets in for Jaensch who has had alot of chances and hasn't improved/shown anything.

My mother noted to me the huge difference in ferocity at the contest between the games she watched on the weekend. She watched the Crows game and then she watched the Power game.......'now that's football' she said.
