There is a post on the main board about one time Freo full back, Alex Silvagni. Whether true or not, the OP questions whether Lyons' favourite son, Zac Dawson, is preventing Silvagni from breaking into the senior squad at Freo.

Silvagni showed a fair bit of promise last year. I am not convinced Tom Gillies will be the man to replace Scarlett should he retire at the end of this year. So should we try and get Silvagni?

You'd think Chris Scott will be well aware of what this kid can offer.

Thoughts?

Solid footballer, worth the club making some inquiries!

We all know that Lyon has a shocking track record with trusting younger players to deliver.

How big/tall is he? Regardless of how good Gillies is, he's not going to have the same reach as a Lonergan.

He showed real promise last year. Alex, obviously not Zac.

He comes across as a typical stingy bastard as a backman.

What Lyon sees in Dawson has me beat. I can only think compromising photos. lol

same size as Scarlett...not big enough to really stop a player like Hawkins etc but good enough as a player to be right up there with Mackie imo

More interested in West Coast's logjam of 6'5+ key defenders, to be honest (especially if Glass goes on in 2013 and beyond). Mitch Brown, Will Schofield, Eric Mackenzie. All quality players (in my opinion), Brown (St Pat's) and Schofield (Geelong College) are from country Victoria and Mackenzie, the oldest, turns 24 next month. I've always liked Sam Butler a lot as well, as a smaller defender, though he is a bit older (27 by Round 1, 2013). Silvagni, like the West Coast talls, would be worth a look, but it depends a lot on where Gillies, Bathie and perhaps even Walker are at by the end of this year.

191cm
90kgs

Scarlo is 192cm 94kgs

Alex is the same size as Joel Corey

You know what's funny, I was actually thinking about exactly this earlier this week as I was thinking ahead to the end of the year.

Kid can play, beat some very good forwards last year.

Lolworthy that Lyon's love child is keeping him out, doesn't deserve it.

Most certainly, if Gillies doesn't make it by the end of the year (and I hope he does) we'd be negligent not to enquire. Right position, right age bracket, good defender, Victorian. Definitely worth a look.

Would be a handy fit just wonder what it would take to get he deal done?

A 1st rounder or a player?

Saw the thread on the main board and thought the same thing. From what I've seen of him, Silvagni has shown enough to suggest that he could be valuable in our back six over the coming years as people retire. At the moment, I can see him playing a similar role to the role that we are grooming Gillies for and from what I've seen from both of them, I would say that Silvagni is significantly ahead of Gillies at this stage (to be fair, I've not seen a great deal of either of them so I could easily be wrong in my assessment).

Whether it is at all possible to get him I have no idea, but I certainly think that the club should at least make a few enquiries.

He wouldn't come cheap. think of how many teams at the moment are crying out for a key defender who can play on talls and mediums. I also wonder how much Luke McPharlin's future would factor into it - he's not going to be there forever.

Chris Scott will know some thing about young Alex not sure how much I think this is Alex's 3rd year.So chris would only know him from his first year if I am right.I think alot of other clubs would be after him eg the dorks.I am not sure if the club have what it takes to get the deal done and the club dont normally go after ready made players.I think he would be a great fit in the geelong back6 but there a threads like this every year/month it never happens.

Not convinced he would be right for us at this stage of list build and as far as trading for him , an R1 pick , no way !

Maybe its because of Drum , not sure. Im not even saying we shouldn't look at other clubs lists. He may be a player we could use to fill holes but Id prefer to give games to kids we already have so they are primed for 2014/2016ish. rather trade for him.

Smedts for one who is around the same size who should not be overlooked for games, especially while we still have Scarlett, Enright,Hunt around. The sooner we get him to 70 games the better. Walker and Bathie probably deserve a go as some stage. Something about Walker , he just looks a strong kid who can run.

Maybe if we got him for zip but otherwize id rather stick with our draftees and/or a bargain over looked as per Pods/OS which I think Silvagni was originally.

On the radio the other day it was mentioned the Wells was looking at the GC/GWS seconds , maybe he see value up there in the kids not getting games. If we could pick up one kid not getting a game up there who would it be?
If want someone around that height what about Jeremy Taylor. Ex Falcon & 20years old & 191.

And Scott would have coached him at Freo?

Looking at the GWS/SUNS twos very good idea the kids are not getting agame living away from home etc.Get them back in Vic closer to family playing for the great team in Geelong.

After watching the recent interview with Wellsy he said he was out looking at the GWS 2nds so this might be what we are looking at doing

Lyon's a dead set flog for bringing twiggy over with him when clearly he shouldn't even be on an AFL list. Silvagni however is defensive pedigree, really was impressive last year and wouldn't he just slot in nicely next year. Maybe we could lure Laidler back too? :o:thumbsu:

Laidler? He'd be interested in going BTB, so well worth making a play for him, 2013 is our year??

I think we should have a crack at Bellchambers from the Dons. Big, strong lump of a lad, with good endurance and above average hands. We could do with more numbers in the ruckman area, and surely he'd be getting frustrated at not getting a game. He'd be our number 1 ruckman for sure - not taking anything away from West.
