Was thinking about the prospect of another Gather Round happening in another state, and I wondered if maybe there is another option?

Imagine an ALL-STAR style weekend in Sydney as a mid-season break. Think of the NHL (Ice Hockey) version.

Take your whole team across and have them compete in skills / performance tests - have individual awards and team based stuff.

Running - individual and team based
Agility / Power - like the draft tests, maybe something for evasion?
Skills - Kicking accuracy, distance, goal kicking, handball test
Relay stuff - maybe a bit Cross-Fit style for the team based events?

Could also have a next level player tests before the Mid-season draft? So we could see the potential players compete?

Would take away the risk of injury that proper State-of-Origin would have while showing off the best of the best, would be fun for the players - great break from the grind and would attract a lot of attention in the media.

Thoughts?

Funny - I just did a bit of a look-up on what the players think of the current All-star setup, appears to be on the way out!

There are calls to just replace it with the 4 Nations comp permanently - like our State-of-Origin. The big difference being that would not be exhibition style games, they would be all-in full 100% top level games.

I cannot see us going for that !!!! The risk of long term injury is too great, it would not be something that the clubs would want ... and to honest, I was already nervous about Rankine playing in the Indigenous game pre-season and that was very low contact.

I still think there is space for something where we could see the best of the best from the AFL compete in skills, maybe up against the draft hopefuls / mid-season hopefuls? Maybe that's just me.

Nope Nope Nope.

The only thing I would have any interest in if some big sponsor put $1.5 million prize money on the table for a 4 state competition.

WA vs SA winner plays the All Stars v Vic winner.

Winning team of players / coaches gets 50k for winning. Losing teams get nada.
