The AFL had an article this morning wrapping up each team's suspensions and fines from the MRP this year. We only had Hawkins' dodgy week off for the fist push on Phil Davis and Ruggles fine for Cyril's softness in the QF.

I actually thought this was a good sign, given the more regular acts of frustration some of players have been committing, I'd say since 2012. It seems the players were more settled and more mature in their approach to games.

It's a small thing, but a positive step IMO.

So my question is this: what other small things that might seem insignificant to others did you see this season that give you cause for optimism going forward?

(And be gentle, it's my first thread...)

Jed bews performances vs eddie betts, beat him twice yet then found himself out of the team... Time to persevere with him i think! Small wins vs one player hopefully can turn into beating rioli, wingard, toby greene etc next year.

Could the reason be that Stevie J is now elsewhere.

Firstly well done for getting involved :thumbsu:

Our improved injury list... and while it can be a large amount of luck as well, we have had long term injured Menz/Vards/Cowan play more footy combined this year than almost their entire time on the list.

I think our medical people seem to be the right people moving forward

Linc showed signs this year hope he shows more after another preseason under his belt.
Cocky also needs games should be better with another preseason also

On the MRP - I know he's not a Geelong boy but Rory Sloane week off was total bull.He has a clean record and still copes a week.

Scott Selwood showing he'll be very handy contributor in a late season cameo. Hopefully with a full pre season we'll see him from Round 1 and not Round 20.

This, Him and Menegola's late season cameos made me confident our interior will have more grunt next year letting players like Duncan and Motlop if he's still there work on the outside where they belong.

Yes, I thought that AFL article was interesting. I noted the number of Hawthorn fines but only the one suspension. And that's not counting the Hawthorn hits that were not deemed worthy of sanction (Hodge, Mitchell in the QF). Did you note the clip of Cyril's hit that somehow ended with a free kick to him and resulted in a goal? How? It was mentioned that the revised MRP was a Mark Evan's initiative, there must be a special Hawthorn clause that's not published.

On the OP, not really a small thing at all - our contested ball wins was a huge step forward cf recent years. But as someone posted, out fitness and durability were noticeably improved this year.

Cobber showed some signs this year but I think that a big improvement would come from him just learning to stay in the game longer rather than flashing in for a couple of goals and then fading out. I.e the game against St.Kilda where he kicked three quick goals and did some other good work but then faded out of the game.

Not sure where I've heard/read this, but my understanding is that the team that has dealt with Menzel's knee since ACL #4 has gained some notoriety and respect around the world. Hopefully they do good things with Thurlow's recovery.

Welcome LawnMosey ....good thread first up.

My small thing that might make a difference is young Gregson...good pace, manic tackler and a beautiful kick for goal. Hoping to see him establish himself in 2017.

Imagining how good Dangerwood will be with wood doing a full preseason.

There's doubting what you're going to get from those two, it's the rest that need to lift!

Yep, I like the idea of him and McCarthy patrolling our forward fifty, scaring defenders. Feel like they could both snag a few with a bit more development.

Menzel didn't do a knee. And he had a pretty decent season. Showed enough to suggest there's improvement to come.
I'm not sure about improvement for Menzel, but I'm pretty happy if he stays at around 15-20 disposals gets those 2-3 forward tackles and kicks 35+ goals.

Don't get me wrong, I was happy with his year. Perhaps I'm just being overly optimistic to hope for more, but I felt like he had 6-7 really high level performances this year. With another full preseason, I'd be hoping he could bump that up by a few next year. He had some quiet games, usually the ones where he looked more proppy. Maybe that's just the reality of what a post knee reco'd Dan Menzel season looks like. But even with that in mind, I have greater expectation of him delivering next season than a few others in his age range.
