Potential stars ain't gonna win us flags.

Who would you prefer heading into 2020? Tim Kelly, or Cam McCarthy, Billy Hartung and Tom Cutler? I just used the 2013 draft with the same picks we gave up as an example.

1 known elite quantity over maybe 3 future quality any day when you're in the window.
Look he's 26 years old next year. I wouldn't be as mad if he was 22

Just because our picks in the 30's in recent times have been hit and miss doesn't mean we should throw them around like confetti. Poor logic.
We didn’t ‘throw them around like confetti’, we used them to get a player who will give us the best chance of winning another premiership.

you say that as if we’ve wasted it on some no namer and not the best young mid in the game.

Agree we paid overs but we can have a solid crack at the flag now

We also did the right thing and got Tim & his family where they want to be

Hoping he stays fit and gives us a solid boost 2020!

Well we cant really trade to get back into the draft now, unless Essendon is intending on helping us out after we gave them a second rounder for a third rounder. Still trying to work that one out. Unless we have someone intending to be traded to them or vice versa?

Ask Geelong if they would prefer all those picks or Tim Kelly.

That should provide the answers for the naysayers in this deal.

I'm fine with the deal, stoked to get Kelly, but I don't agree with some of the logic used by some here, being that just because with have drafted some "duds" at 30-40 recently we should be happy to be without it.

For those posters upset that we appear to be paying overs and that we could/should have held out to force a more favourable deal, spare a thought for Tim Kelly and his family

I’ve been anxiously waiting news about this trade, hopeful that this time we’d succeed in bringing him to the club. Ultimately it’s something that has zero impact on my life so I can only imagine how it must have been for Kelly given the massive impact this trade will have on him. It must have been nerve racking, especially after having gone through last year without getting his desired result

I’ve no doubt a factor in this trade would have been the desire to get it done early to alleviate any anxiety for Kelly and his family. If that has meant we’ve conceded a little more in negotiations then so be it

Can’t wait until this becomes official

Devil's advocate...

The more you pay the more pressure you place in the importance of the outcome. Hawthorn gave up 23, 36 and a future first (7) and second (26) round pick to get Jaeger O'Meara who played 6 games in his first year. He's been good since, but he's not a top calibre midfielder in the AFL and I'm not sure he will be after his knee injuries.

My biggest concern is that Kelly is a one hit wonder. If we got 5 years of a guy that is actually as good as Dangerfield then we would be laughing, but he isn't at that level. I'm not expecting him to be a dud but Angus Brayshaw polled 21 Brownlow votes last year and 0 this year. Rory Laird polled 19 last year and 2 this year. Shane Edwards and Shaun Higgins were in the AA side last year, where were they this year?

If he's just as good as some of the guys we already have (which is where I see him as a player) is it still worth it? If he does a Jack Redden and has a slow start with the fans/media turn on him? I don't know what others' expectations are but I am not expecting a Lachie Neale/Patrick Dangerfield level recruit impact from him next year. Injury permitting I expect he will play every game for us and be around the top 5 of the B&F. If he turns up, wins the Brownlow and B&F etc. then I am more than happy to be wrong in my assessment, but I don't think he is that good.

While you should only judge any pick(s) for player trade on the value of the pick(s) at the time, the more picks involved the more chance one of them becomes a good player. Geelong might go full Geelong and use the first rounders on duds and then draft stars at 24 and 33 and we'll never hear the end of it. Though this doesn't matter, only on field success for WC matters.

Gotta love the hysterical crying 'WE SOLD THA FARRM".

Without a low end first round pick we had to find a way to satisfy Geelong without giving away any players.

We got a top 10 midfielder for a bunch of speculative picks, we've done well.

We've strengthened our premiership chances next year immeasurably.

We currently only have two selections in the national draft (52, 64). My understanding was all teams must take three selections in the national draft? Can someone confirm?

I can only assume that West Coast are now / have to trade back into the 2019 draft some how.
