I woke up a few minutes ago (9.30am CDT) to see the most shocking news I've ever seen!

I'm now in tears for those who have lost their lives in this act of terrorism.

Our own Sears Tower and John Hancock Building in Chicago have been evacuated just in case.

All Americans mourn the loss of lives due to this cowardly act!

Requiem aeternum dona eis Domine.

Chigago 1, my thoughts are with you & all the people who are being affected by this horrendous attack, I wonder how our mate stealth bomber is doing, is Winsconsin near NY or Washingotn?

Relax, Mantis. Wisconsin is far enough away to be safe.

Thanks, Hippie and mantis.

Stealth is a couple of hundred miles north of me, so is very safe.

I'm 25 miles directly west of the center of Chicago so we're rather nervous here. Our main trade buildings have been closed and I've just seen that all airports are closed in the US.

This is hard to believe. I'm sitting here shaking as I type this.

My thoughts and prayers are with you Chicago1, Stealth Bomber, and every other American. This is truly tragic and shocking news.

Ben

This is just terrible. Those responsible are going to feel the wrath of the western world.

I've been watching this ever since the news broke and have had my eyes glued to Fox News, CNN, ABC everything. I burst into tears when the 2nd tower went down!! News that there were people jumping from windows....:(

One of the American Airlines planes came from Boston, the other from Chicago!

This is a sad day and i send my heart felt condonlences to the victims families.

This act of terrorism will not be tolerated.

I saw a thread on a plane crashing into the World Trade Centre building and i thought it was a joke, as soon as that thought left my head my brother shouted me to come quickly to his room. I stood there mouth agape in shock.....

Ive never seen anything like this in my entire life and i was sitting there just shaking and watching, i thought its ok the building is on fire it can be put out...but then it collasped?!.. I dont know what to do....i cant believe how many ppl lost there lives today.

I will be very surprised if anyone accepts responsibility for this, America's response will be HUGE, and so it should be

Many Chicago buildings have been evacuated.

Chicago shopping centers, even in the far suburbs, have been closed.

University classes have been cancelled.

All sporting events have been cancelled.

Many cable TV networks have shut down.

EWTN, the Catholic TV network has begun broadcasting prayers for the victims.

We mourn our loss as a united nation.

We got a call at 1am from stepdaughter, who is in LA. I stayed up till about 3.30am, when it looked like no more was going to happen. Missus stayed up all night. We just swapped shifts - she's gone to bed.

All four planes were originally on their way to Calif, before trounced., so we were on the phone a lot trying to convince her to head out of town for the day (she lives close to city centre), but she was keen on staying put.

Very scary chain of events, the footage seemed like a Diehard movie. Hope those responsible are found and dealt with, but for now, mourning for those killed and prayer/wellwishing for those whose lives hang in the balance, is in order.

TD,

Thanks for the thought.

Everyone is stunned here. The flag outside our home is at half mast.

The nation has virtually closed down for the moment. I had been planning to see the Cubs tomorrow, but don't even know if games will be held. Today's games have been canceled. Plans for the weekend to go to Ohio's Cedar Point Park are on hold. Not sure when an official National Day of Mourning will be declared.

This is one of the saddest days in my life.

This news is terrible. Chicago as other people have said, hang in there. Being a 26 year old, I never thought anything like this would happen in my lifetime, it was our grandparents who had to deal with this kind of thing.

Very scary not knowing whats ahead for us all.

Have just turned on my T.V and am in total shock. This is chilling stuff. I fear greatly for the whole world.

Chicago1, I can't imagine how you are feeling. I pray you are safe.

Thanks for your thoughts, meg, Jawest and ODN.

As I mentioned in another thread : if this would have occurred tomorrow (Wed) I would have been on a train on my way to Chicago to see the Cubs play. It was bad enough waking up to the news this morning. I can only imagine what it would have been like arriving in downtown Chicago as the area was being evacuated.

There is just so much information coming through it's mind boggling.

I'm sure the thoughts and prayers of most BigFooty posters are with me, Stealth and my fellow Americans at this sad time. I thank you all for that.

C1....may I add to the voices saying my thoughts are with you and all the victims of this horrendous tragedy.

I was physically sick when I saw the tower collapse - it was the most horrifying thing I have ever seen.

I stayed up until 2 then went to bed....needless to say I have very little sleep. It's very quiet at work at the moment, I expect a lot of people won't come in - I know work is the last thing on my mind at the moment.

And now I'm hearing of attacks of Afghanistan, home of Osama Bin Laden. I'm too distraught to talk about who is to blame right now - let's just say I hope the people responsible get what they deserve. I just hate to think of what long-term effects this will have on the world.

I'm not sure how many of you have been to New York or the World Trade Centre....but it is impossible to appreciate the sheer size of the buildings unless you have been there and been up the top. It's hard to believe 3 years ago I was standing on the observation deck, thinking this has to be one of the best views in the world. And it's right in the middle of the the crowded financial district, there would have literally been a million people within its vicinity.

Well my parents always say they remember the day JFK was shot - I think it's pretty safe to say September 11, 2001 will be etched in my memory forever.

I just thought I'd add the firm I worked for did have an office in the World Trade Centre until the bombing in 1993, when they moved everyone out. However, from talk this morning there is a good chance that some people were visiting clients at the time - given the amount of people that work there. I also have colleagues from Australia who recently moved to the New York office who live downtown - needless to say I'm praying that they are OK. :(
