Was curious how we built our team so I put together how/when we drafted our premiership team since Bomber took over in late 1999.

Pre 1999 – Scarlett, Harley, Milburn, Wocjinksi
99 – Mooney (trade), Enright, , Corey, Ling, Chapman
00 – Rooke (rookie)
01 – Ablett, Bartell, Kelly, S. Johnson
02 – Mackie, Byrnes (rookie)
03 – Blake
04 – Ottens (trade)
05 – Varcoe
06 – Selwwod, Hawkins
07 - Taylor

With 16/22 players being there for at least 7 years, it just shows how long it takes to build such a strong team and how much credit must go to Bomber/Costa/Cook/Wells for developing the club and players so well during the early years of 1999-2003. :thumbsu:

Very interesting. Good to see we only traded twice. And really we got Mooney because Colbert wanted to go. Since 2003 really only one player from each draft has come on. And surprise surprise most were first round picks. Just shows you must keep your first round pick. Kudos to Stephen Wells.

They have done amazingly well building up the list to give us the team we have now. We have got some good talent from the drafts and then the club has nurtured them to turn them into great players.

Interesting ...And done without any high draft picks.
Contrast our list with the Saints who enjoyed many years of higher picks and we can truly appreciate the work done by the recruiters who assembled our list without the side really bottoming out

Discounting the fortunate F/Son pickups;) of course

When you see that of that list, only Mackie and Selwood were top 10 picks, it shows how well Wells has done (and that you DON'T need to bottom out to win a flag) :thumbsu:

Bartel & Corey were both top 10 weren't they?

Ottens was pick 2 but we traded two 1st round pick for him.

we also have Taylor, Varcoe and I think Kelly were also 1st round if memory serves me correctly.

If Jesse Smith hadn't been so cruelled by injuries so far in his short career you'd be on better terms with the father/son rule I can tell you...
