What is a gotcha journalist?

Is that when someone says something incoherent or contradictory and a right-thinking journalist points it out?

And this is some kind of pejorative?
A Gotcha journalist believes that if they can use rhetoric to find an error or contradiction in someone's argument then everything they say can be dismissed out of hand.
It appeals only to the lazy or wilfully ignorant.
Think Andrew Bolt and his cheer squad.

Isn't identifying errors or contradictions in an argument a worthy objective? What do you think a journalist is meant to do during an interview? Just sit there nodding along?

You may as well be describing some of the best, hardest-hitting interviewers of recent times. Someone like Stephen Sackur on the BBC's Hardtalk does exactly what you are describing and it's probably the best current affairs interview programme as a result. Or Jeremy Paxman, to go back a generation.

It appeals only to the lazy or wilfully ignorant.
On the contrary. When done effectively, it requires clear thinking, the use of evidence, reason and a command of detail.

Think Andrew Bolt and his cheer squad.
Andrew Bolt doesn't do that. He's an ideologue and a commentator.

The difference is you and Andrew Bolt can't be bother listening to anyone or intelligently discussing or analysing anything. If someone says something you disagree with you want to 'win' on some minor rhetorical point so you have a reason to dismiss their opinion out of hand. Generally you do this by misinterpreting someone's argument because you have taken the time to listen to it before reacting.
I imagine you think you are smartest person in every room.

On the contrary, I'm following very closely what's been said. I think that's pretty clear.

And if you want to offer some intelligent analysis, I'm happy to hear it. But I suggest there's precious little of that going around. Partly because there's simply no new information.

Didn't you suggest that "Gaff isn't Kelly so why would North do a trade"? That's intelligent analysis?

If someone says something you disagree with you want to 'win' on some minor rhetorical point so you have a reason to dismiss their opinion out of hand.
Except it's not a minor rhetorical point. Little Snakey said one thing and then said the complete opposite without acknowledging the reversal. That's what happened. Is it against the rules to point this out?

Currently, I reckon Snakey rivals LukeParkerNo1 as the poster with the biggest gap between their imagined and actual insight. They think they're nines when they're threes. There has to be some correction baked into the cake here. He should wear the rubber pants until he stops wetting the bed.

Generally you do this by misinterpreting someone's argument because you have taken the time to listen to it before reacting.
That's not what happened here. There is no interpretation required to identify Snakey's obvious contradictions.

He said North wouldn't even consider trading for Gaff. And that if Gaff was traded, WC would only get pick 19-21.

He has completely reversed that but still wants to pretend he was on the money the whole time.

So your claim that I'm "misinterpreting his argument" makes no sense. You need only look at what he said.

I imagine you think you are smartest person in every room.
Most rooms, sure. But being arrogant doesn't make me wrong, champion.

Nor am I the muppet who described his own posting as "elite".
Guess who that was.

Look at him liking all your posts rather than fronting up to explain himself. Where is his "elite" posting now?

Why did lewis choose Melbourne when he could have choosen Richmond? He has wasted his final years...

Why did Tyson, hibberd, melksham, vince, garlett etc choose Melbourne when they did? Because they saw the youth Melbourne had and saw a future.

If you think carlton wont rise within the next 2 years you are well off.
Comparing Tyson and Garlett to Gaff is laughable. Other than those 2, the rest of the players named came after -
1. we finished in the 9-13 range
2. Good money

We were miles better than Carlton now at the time of recruiting Hibberd, Melksham, Lewis, Lever etc. None of them are really at Gaff's level aside from Lever/Hibberd who are probably close, but still behind, so no reason for Gaff to chose Carlton

If you read closely... youll get i didn't compare garlett or Tyson to Gaff.

i wanna see gaff at melbourne, just got that right feel. Melbourne is a nearly team in that its got all the assets for a flag but mental side of things could be fragile and overcoming that is not something that can be easily bought with free agent. But i have to say melbourne is right up there after richmond as melbourne has the victorian factor advantage where the sydneys, west coast will struggle. In fact i my top 4 based on overall factors would be richmond melbourne geelong collingwood as all big vic clubs. Richmond still the superior team as they got much better 4th term abilities.

First off Lewis had already won 4 premierships, while I'm sure he would love nothing more the tasting the ultimate success again I doubt chasing another premiership was his number one incentive when he was looking at a club. Melbourne offered him sercurity and he seen it as a chance to not only extend his career but to help pass on his knowledge to a young and talented squad looking to take the next step (similar to Hodge, Obviously lions needed that experience head to teach the kids and are along way behind Melbourne).
Also If say Melbourne n Richmond were both after Lewis n had the choice, looking at both lists and there 2016 seasons there was no way you would say Richmond were way ahead of Melbourne in the race for the premiership. You could even say Melbourne while younger looked more likely for a flag before tigers.

Tyson was traded in when he was at the similar age as the young talent on the list so, he would be hoping by the time he reaches his peak the rest of team will at the same time. Gaff is at his Peak years now, by the time Carlton are ready to seriously challenge Gaff will be 30+ n coming to the end of his career (having to carry such a young inexperienced team year after year before they come good will also shorten a footballers career

Melksham and Hibberd age profiles and skills fit exactly what Melbourne wanted and they probably offered better contracts then anyone else. Also Melbourne wen they joined is nothing compared to Carlton right now

Vince I believed should have chased a premiership but maybe melbournes offer was to good or other teams weren't interested the same could be said for Garlett

Carlton will get better but still won't be in fk sls contention, your coming from a long way back

1. Melbourne
2. St.Kilda
3. North Melbourne
4. Essendon

That would be my top 4 teams that Gaff could look at if he returns to Melbourne

Mahlepi is adamant that Gaff wants to play for Geelong and he's been on the money before. Also Scott - with a wry grin - alluded to us chasing a free agent last week.

Now If Kelly decides he wants to return to Perth and the rumour about Gaff to Geelong is true, how do you see a deal being reached? A hypothetical sees (let's say) Geelong offer Gaff $800,000 and West Coast agree not to match based on Kelly being traded to the Eagles whilst still under contract, for under his trade value.

Is Mahlepi the same guy who had you convinced Devon Smith was Geelong-bound this time last year? Gaff will be at the Eagles or Demons next year, you can lock that in.

No. Smith wanted more money and chose Essendon in the end.

Saying that I'm not convinced Gaff will be at Geelong. I've been a big believer in drafting our players from day dot, it's what makes our recent premierships stand out.

I would demote us to lower as gaff is a better fit for a team in finals or top 4.

Especially when you are able to draft father sons such as Ablett and Scarlett for 3rd round picks.

yup, nothing changes during a draft period
because we went into a draft pretending to draft delludio as a rouse to trade caddy
seriously people, managers sometimes do lie, players change their mind, and not everyone is honourable

but yes i am the guy who saud danger was coming to geelong despite the nutter chicken brigade, yes i was the one who said hendo was coming, yes i was the one who said ablett was coming, yes i said smith was coming
and the list goes on

and yes things change, and things dont work out as people intend them to
and yes west coke won assisted flags

He did. Not re-signed and the feeling is he is well and truly looking East.

Just need to make the best out of a not great situation.

Good luck, and I hope your club gets adequately compensated.:thumbsu:
