As long as it doesn't cost us any draft picks, I don't see how we can lose. Lovett is a very talented player and would love playing at Subi every second week, and God knows we need speed in our midfield.

If we can get him through the PSD, then it will be a win for us. But if Lovett insists on a trade being completed, I'd probably prefer him to go to Brisbane just because it would likely cost us draft picks.

If he comes to us for free, then I'm all for it! Although his off field history is a worry with our young brigade, however am i right in thinking he has been on the straight and narrow for some time???

If he is going to cost us picks, then Brisbane can have him.

Next year Tarrant chooses Essendon as his prefered destination, what happens then? people have long memories and good recruiters stay in there job for a very long time.

if next year Taz wants to leave, and freo doesnt get a good trade, he will just go into the pre-season draft and be picked up by the gold coast. Essendon wouldnt have a chance unless they offer something good. I think Taz will play his career out with freo. basically it's freo or the gold coast for him unless a melbourne club gives us something very very good for him

Yep, so this year or next, if TAZ wants to play in Melbourne we will get a trade. I'm warming to the idea of keeping him for next year. Another year's improvement in the team and you never know, he might just see enough hope to stay around another couple of years. And his missus might make some friends.
The only down side is if he does go home at the end of 2010 he will be worth a bit less than he is right now.

Moonwalk to Freo via the PSD baby, you owe nobody nothing Andrew.

You asked for a trade and they diddled you, why look out for them now?

I don't care what anyone says, 26 is YOUNG. He has 3-4 years minimum in him, more than most draft picks.

He suits our ground and we have the cash to spare - no brainer. Anyone who says different has NFI.

My thoughts exactly

I guess if Taz is desperate to get home next season and Freo can't do a trade he could pull a Josh Carr and say "I'll be living in Melbourne but if GC draft me I'll be happy to play for them while living in Victoria".

Meh, If he wants to go then he will probably go to Brisbane as Essendon would rather get something for him and trade him before the PSD.

What has that got to do with anything? It's like saying Judd should be playing for the Demons because they offered a better trade. Lovett will choose which ever club makes the superior presentation and offers the most money.

Taz would be worth a fair bit more as a trade than Carr though, so we'd be able to get something for him. Just a bit less than this year. Mind you, we will win a few more games next year with Taz, so maybe that's worth the down grade from say a 2nd this year to a 3rd round pick next year.

Lovett doesn't strike me as a PowerPoint kind of guy.;)

Now this article is about Davey and what we supposedly offered him ... but we could be doing a similar thing with Lovett. He might be our plan B.

"It is understood that the package involved a third-party arrangement with a major mining and resources company which would have paid a portion of Davey's salary to be involved with one of its indigenous health programs.

The amount, believed to be a six-figure sum, was to sit outside of Fremantle's player payments and therefore be exempt from salary cap constraints. "

Whether its the same thing or not, (i.e. indigenous health), I think people might be surprised what you can get away with in terms of legal payments outside the salary cap. I know Judd (the Carlton variety) appeared at a function of a mining company to give a guest speech and pocketed a ridiculous sum which was all OK with the AFL and not included in the salary cap.

Not if we max his salary to a point they can or aren't willing to pay they won't.

i understand that, but richmond would have some spare dollars as well... richo is a veteran, the only other player on big money would be delidio

Pity that plan for Davey didn't work. Freo would have ushered in free agency. It is stupid that we can have a massive amount of cash left in our salary cap thanks to all our rookies and no viable/legitimate way to use it.

If we're splashing the cash then Lovett will almost certainly commit to Freo in the next couple of days one would think?? Brisbane's salary cap would probably be pretty tight.

I'll be a tad disappointed if we refuse to trade though. By all means use the PSD as leverage and offer a shitty deal but don't burn bridges by refusing to talk.

It's pretty cool to see Harves being so ruthless with his old club though - especially since some people have tried to paint him as belonging to some Essendon old boys club.

Plus we might finally get a tiny bit of revenge for them screwing us on startup with the Delaney/Ridley for pick4(Lucas)/compensation pick(Lloyd) deals. Yeah I know how to hold a grudge baby...

I'm not too sure about all this. Sure, he's an ok footballer and all...

He'll be 27 at the start of next season. Paul Hasleby will be 28, turning 29 in June.

Considering the way we treated Chops, I will be pretty dark if Lovett gets three years on big bikkies. Paul Hasleby is ten times the player Lovett is.

And I'm not convinced that pressuring players into the PSD is the right way of going about things. If we do actually want him, we should try and trade for him. But to try and screw over a club and get him for nothing leaves me feeling a bit uneasy.

Despite the fact it might have happened to us in the past, I can not agree it is the right way of doing business.
