I see Otten playing down back, in the third tall position, with Davis at CHB. Rutten obviously lines up at full back. Our starting three small/mid defenders are Johncock, Doughty, and van Berlo to reprise the role down back rather than moving back to the midfield. Stevens comes through as a floating half back, and is first go-to man if Davis or Otten are struggling - if Davis proves to not yet be ready to step up into the CHB role, then Stevens gets moved to CHB for the remainder of the year, with Davis taking the third tall, and Otten becoming the loose man in defence. Martin and Mackay rotate through the backlines. Young (assuming he doesn't play the defensive forward role again) as tall emergency, Symes as mid-sized emergency, Petrenko as small emergency. Hopefully Talia joins the emergency list later on.

Don't see Tambling playing there, I think he's more likely to sit on a wing fairly permanently.

I think our back 6 will look like this:

Johncock Rutten Stevens
Otten Davis Tambling

Van Berlo will be put on a wing and then we will have Doughty rotating through there...

I think that if Davis doesn't hold down CHB, then we would have to try Sellar.... I dont think that we want Stevens at CHB - his reading of the play is his biggest asset and we need him to be the loose man....

Pity it was ruined by SLOW Rutten:(

WHAT!!!!!!!

We were playing at the MCG....we were never supposed to win going by your home ground logic.

We should win all home game, ergo, Collingwood win due to home ground advantage. Slow Rutten or not. Don't blame Ben Rutten, you said that logic.

I think Sellar would get absolutely mauled at CHB. I'd rather lose Stevens' reading of the play (and give that role to Otten who also reads the play very well) than allow opposition teams to direct play through Sellar's man.

I disagree.

Centre Half Back is one of the easiest spots on the ground to play and also one of the easiest to teach, as long as the player has got the right mindset and is of the right height and build.

I think our back 6 will look like this:

Johncock Rutten Stevens
Otten Davis Tambling

My back 6

FB - Johncock ~ Rutten ~ Stevens
HB - van Berlo ~ Davis ~ Tambling (doughty will replace him when he goes into the midfield rotation - wing)

Van Berlo will be put on a wing and then we will have Doughty rotating through there...

IMO, van Berlo will play HBF this year and that will allow Otten and MacKay to start on the wing. With player rotations, Tambling will move to the wing and Doughty to a HBF. Doughty will start on the interchange and replacing Tambling at HBF

Yes to Davis but i'd go for Tarlia or Gunston as second and third choice CHB and allow Jimmy to be a back up ruckman or 3rd tall forward. As others have said, reading of the play isn't one of his strong suits, therefore playing at CHB maybe a dangerous move. Allow Jimmy to just leading to the ball or becoming a contested marking forward (ALA Mathew Robran where all he did was make a contest, and didn't have to take the mark)

Whilst I agree with you I do however believe that this is one area that he will improve in with time. Davis seems to take his footy very seriously, and his dedication to his role as a shut down defender in detriment to other areas of his game is perhaps a reflection of this. I noticed that you didn't mention Talia, he is one player who could be ideal (long term) for the CHB position. Talia certainly seems to have the size, athleticism and endurance to mind a forward and run off him if need be.

Oh no doubt, I was going to mention him, then sort of decided I'd rambled enough:o Although, I do kind of feel that Talia might develop more into that 3rd tall role, he has the height and agility to go with players much smaller than him, so could play the Hart/Smart/Bassett style role quite well, playing on both talls and smalls, whilst also offering a bit more of an attacking edge. I also feel he might do better without the restriction of playing the genuine CHB/FB roles.

You still need another two players to rotate through those running half back roles throughout a game.

And you probably need another couple on the list to hedge against injury.

So I expect Otto to be in the backline, with stints elsewhere.

As I said earlier in this thread, he will rotate through defence as the modern game demands, but play primarily as a mid. Symes, Petrenko, Armstrong, Reilly, Mackay, Smith, Sellar, Young, Thompson, McKernan and countless others will play through the backlines as well.

There is no need for Otten to play in defence if it better suits he can make a superior contribution in the midfield.

hmmmm not sure danger reads the game well enough to play a Hodge type role across CHB. I'd love to see him coming off the HB line but in a less accountable role ideally.

Wouldn't mind seeing it as an experiment.

If Davis can develop as a 'good' key forward at all this season then I think some serious thought should go into some trading antics. No point keeping Davis, Walker, Tippett all as key position forwards when our midfield isn't first rate.

re CHB, selection may be a horses for courses approach, with this in mind when we play against sides like the Hawks or Saints I would like to consider Hendo in this role.

in the past players like Buddy Franklin and Nick Riewoldt have hurt us with their running capacity and in response we have had little defensive alternatives, however Hendo is one player on our list who can not only match Buddy and Nick in this area. but also absolutely destroy teams with his run from CHB.

Issue with Hendo in this role is I'm not sure he has the body strength, nor the height to counter a lack of body strength, for this role. Henderson isn't a particularly physical player, his game is based upon supreme speed, power and sheer gut running. Whilst he has the running power to go with these guys, I'd prefer to see him using that running power in across our half-forward line and through the midfield.

To me, Henderson doesn't really come across as a defender, I could see Dangerfield playing the role, but personally I think we've got enough 192cm+, athletic guys on our list that can fill this role, that we should be looking too first.

Well then, its gotta be right...

Silly me for thinking you might actually have asked him about it personally, or know a member of the family. I think I might just go on calling him Andy until you can actually come up with a valid reference.

Wow - calm down there Jim. Its just a name.

will be interesting to see. personally I think he's probably best suited to McLeod's role as a perfect 1 for 1 swap.

in any case, I think he's just the right sort of player for us.

spot on :thumbsu:

its certainly the easiest Key position on the ground.

James 37, Do you see Otten been a midfielder in the long term? Is his ball winning and mobility decent?

Long term I think he'll develop into a bit of an Anthony Koutoufides/Chad Cornes everywhere man, spending periods up forward, through the midfield and down back. Certainly had no issues finding the footy in '09 and IIRC in '08 was one of South's best ball winners whilst playing through the midfield(not that that's much to hang you're hat on:o), he certainly has the agility(pending recovery from knee injury). I'm not just talking your "Jack of all trades, master of none" type, I think he's the kind of player who you could throw around the ground and he'll actually make a genuine difference no matter where you put him.

What's Chad up to these days?

Thanks James 37, Good assessment. If he could turn out to be as good as the two you mentioned, fans would very happy indeed.

I would love to see Otten named on the wing and see him drop back into defense and play as a third tall when possible and have more of an influence on the match further up the ground. I think he will start in his old role as he only has one season of AFL under his belt but once he gets going I would like to see him across the wing.
