Round 7 vs Collingwood

Andrew Raines did well early on smooth-moving Magpie Scott Pendlebury but when the move to the increasingly dominant Dane Swan came in the third quarter, coach Nathan Buckley played his ace. He sent Swan forward. The result was three shots on goal in three minutes and Raines was forced to carry himself back to Pendlebury.

Raines was moved onto Swan at the start of the second quarter, and completely nullified him, until halfway through the 3rd when the move came

Round 9 vs North Melbourne

Andrew Raines quietened North's prime mover, Harvey, in the first half but that meant Swallow was loose. A switch onto Swallow in the second half unshackled Harvey but Swallow remained largely undimmed and that pair, with Goldstein, helped steady the Roos.

Raines gains 'veteran' tag
1:05 PM Fri 08 Jun, 2012

“It’s probably the best win I can remember being part of,” Raines told lions.com.au.

“We had some good wins early in 2010, but it’s been pretty lean since then. So to beat the top side when we weren’t given much of a chance was fantastic - I haven’t been on the end of too many of those.”

“I also enjoy being somewhat of a leader among the young midfield group. With Blacky out last weekend, I think I was almost the oldest guy in there.”

“I’ll just keep trying to setting the scene for these younger blokes in my actions and communication out on the field.”

I cant believe hes only played 85 games! After the job hes done on Ablett, Kerr, Selwood and the like, youd think he's a 150gamer tagger!

AND hes only 26 this year! He could go another 8 seasons baring injury...

The Raines Bandwagon is now over-subscribed! Great to see!

It's also fantastic to see Raines kicking the occasional goal. While his kicking has been maligned in the past by some, there were plenty of us who were of the view that he had the capacity to contribute offensively to the team as well.

Raines is going from strength to strength!

Lions Midfielder Andrew Raines Part of a New Breed of Taggers
July 11, 2012
Damien Stannard

The likes of Brownlow medallists Gary Ablett and Chris Judd may find the tactics no less irritating, but the traditional style of tagging - as championed by retired close-checking stoppers such asTony Liberatore and Steven Baker - is fading.
A new breed has stepped into their place, headed by some of the AFL's most exciting players.
Sydney's Kieren Jack and Eagle Scott Selwood are the figureheads but Brisbane Lions midfielder Andrew Raines is not far behind.
The difference between the "bad old days" and now is that Raines will be analysing his opponent's every movement to define how to play off them, rather than simply on them.
"You've got to do your homework," said Raines, one of the few players this season to have won a head-to-head battle with mercurial Gold Coast Suns captain Ablett.
"Vossy usually tells me Tuesday or Wednesday.
"Then I go through the video and try to find ways to expose them and learn about the craft I'm doing."

Raines seems to be fairly blinkered when the goals are in sight. It's not a huge problem because he doesn't get a lot of shots on goal, and the times that he perhaps would have been better off passing he has actually kicked the goal. While I think it's good that players are wanting to take responsibility, I predict it will be an issue that gets raised at some point.

I am actually happy to see him take a blazing shot at goal because at least you are getting a fifty fifty chance to get six points whereas a deft pass off for him is considerably more difficult and likely resulting in a turnover

Raines kicks clear of setbacks
August 1, 2012
Beth Newman

Brisbane Lions midfielder Andrew Raines arrived at the Gabba at the end of 2009 in dire need of a fresh start.

“I felt like I needed a bit of a change and there were some other things behind the scenes, and then the opportunity came to play under Vossy (Brisbane Lions coach Michael Voss) and a change is what I needed,” Raines said.

Raines said his extended injury stints had helped him develop in all aspects of football.

Raines has flourished this year in a shut-down role for the Lions, taking on the opposition's top midfielder every weekend.Having played 14 of a possible 18 games this season, Raines said he has finally started to become the player he always hoped to be.

Raines likely to get job on Cotchin
August 03, 2012
Greg Davis

The Lions midfielder - and former Tiger - cannot wait to tackle Richmond's gun onballers Trent Cochin and Dustin Martin.

Raines has held his own against the likes of superstars Gary Ablett and Joel Selwood in 2012 and is likely to get first crack at prolific ball-winner Cotchin.

"That (tagging) is my job, I've got to play on the best every week. I don’t look forward to too many games thinking about who've I got, but each bloke is a quality A-grade midfielder so that's the attitude I've got to have.

Somebody mentioned that his skills have improved, and that is hard to argue with. Can't recall any clangers recently, and his disposal isn't standing out as being bad like it used to. As such you could argue that he's in career best form considering he continues to be very effective as a stopper.

100th game next week. Well done to him.

Congrats Rainesy on the 100th. Doesn't get the attention that others get but he has probably been one of our most consistent players. I never thought he would be anything other than depth on our list but I find myself not even worrying about who is the oppositions best mid as he usually at the very least keeps them from having a big influence and is also at times getting a fair bit himself and kicking goals. Hope to see another 100.
