Whuile Sanidlands was one of the best on ground yesterday, I actually think Gus wore him down in the end. He just refused to give up.

...exactly...and he was'nt on his lonesome there as well!...:thumbsu:...

...they are playing for each other and the jumper and it shows!...:thumbsu:...

It was Gus' own little Rumble in the Jungle game tug ;), took the hits, tired Sandilands out (with TV's help), then suddenly sprung to life relatively fresh and started landing a few killer blows at crucial moments.

Would have been about the last thing Harvey or Sandilands expected I reckon and hats off to the coaching staff for the way they handled the Graham/Sandilands tactical battle.

gus was never going to win the ruckwork, sandilands was great, but it was good to see gus running kicking generaslly contributing. not a bad effort

Agree tugga. Went forward and snagged a goal, took some marks around the ground, even beat Sandilands a couple of times in a row in boundary throw ins in the back pocket in the last quarter. All the things I've been saying he doesn't do. :o

Was not expecting this, came on this thread expecting to see the same old abuse but it's refreshing to see him get some credit. Runs all day and while he looks lazy at times, i would be very surprised if going over the tapes Dimma would allow Graham to be lazy 5 games in a row without dropping him. I definitely believe it is because he is buggered having to ruck all day. Going to be a solid enough ruckman for a long time :thumbsu:

Last half Guss picked up 11 touches @ 100% eff to Sandilands 9 @ 65% and although he didnt get a lot of hitouts, they ended up at a very, very respectable 42% eff. Sandilands dominated in the ruck but with 28% eff. that shows the pressure Guss applied. All up Guss had 15 pressure acts to Sandis 6.

Even Dermi on the footy show rated his an "exceptional game" and a apologised for not being able to fit him into the votes.

Funny how so many want him dropped over the last 6 weeks, but he is just another product of Dimmas who has risen to the challenge and refuses to give the opposition easy ball.

46% of his hitouts were to advantage, at one stage of the first half where he was picking and choosing the contests he had a leap at he had 4 hitouts and 100% of them were to advantage. Really looking forward to a couple of years from now when he's fitter and can take mature rucks like Sandilands on all game rather than negating.

I know alot of people give Graham flack for being lazy but IMO he works very hard, often hits the deck to tackle someone and clearly ran Sandilands off his feet this weekend

I think he actually laid the most tackles on the weekend, and that is far more tiring than running around.

I would be curious as to where he sits for the season in the tackle count?

3rd (with 37) behind Jackson (41) and Nahas (38).

Gus is a warhorse, i have seen him take so many knocks and being crushed in contested situations but he just keeps on going. he is as honest as they get. If he is lumbering around its because he is genuinely stuffed or smashed up in the ribs. contest after contest he is there giving his all and i think for a bloke who isnt as agile as most afl footballers he is doing really well.

he puts his body on the line and goes when its his turn to go and from what Hardwick has tried to install in these guys that is all anyone can ask of him.

reckon Gus needs a weekend in the spa, and after facing Sandi seems the ideal time for a rest. Browne going consistently well, I reckon we'd all like to see him go round in the 1s, and make Derricx fit up and carry the ruck in the Burgers.

Only problem is, 2 big, winnable games coming up, would hate to change the middle ! Perhaps a bit early in the season to be resting Gus, but I reckon that Browne will get a run at some point for his own development, and to keep Gus tip top...lookout for the dreaded 'leg' dream teamers with Gus!

(and apologies

Thanks Ranger, that is a pretty telling stat for a guy considered by many as lazy. A guy that size tackling so much is a massive plus IMO.

Too many guys are too quick to judge on this site.

I'm enjoying all of this Gus love at the moment...

Certainly holding up his end of the Tiger bargain and he and the coaches got it right on Saturday.
A man has got to know his limitations and then exploit advantages that exist.

Good game from Gus.

I know Dream Team points is generally considered a poor measuring stick, but just to add to the Gus love he's coming 3rd for points in the ruck position behind only Cox and Sandilands. Must be doing something right. Would have been a nice unique pick too if someone got him.

You can't have elite players in every position in the side - no team does. Gus may never be Dean Cox but he continues to shows enough improvement to justify his selection.

Collingwood are seen as having a very complete side but if it came down to a choice between Jolly, Wood or Graham - for an emerging side like ours - I'd take Gus every time. And possibly even over Brown as well.

Yes, you do have to turn your list over and continue to weed out the players who will not assist us in winning a flag - but you also have to give players time to find their feet at the highest level.

lol sandilands totally dominated and graham was totally incapable of stopping him.47 ho 23 possesions numerous blocks shepherds etc he was in so much action its no wonder he tired. yes graham tried hard to the end buts that what graham does no matter the opposition tries hard.
lmao sandilands did a demo job not only on graham but nearly on us as well.
ah perspective and honesty.

Sandilands is an awesome player - he's just so big, if the ball comes within his radius, he gets it. He's one of the best clearance players in the league.

I reckon if he ever crunched someone - legally or illegally - the whole league would just gasp, and he would become THE most dominant player in the game. He doesn't physically intimidate - but, by god, if he did.......

And I'm pretty sure after that hit Phil Davis was out for about 4-5 weeks.

He had 43 not 47 hitouts, and at least Gus dragged him back from a whopping 53 hitouts last week. He was also at 28% eff in his hitouts (Gus 42% eff in hitouts) which showed the pressure Gus put on him. And as i posted before, Gus had 11 2nd half disposals at 100% eff to Sandilands 9 at 65% eff.

You say he had "numerous blocks" well Gus had 16 pressure acts (4th behing Jackson, Newman and Martin) to Sandilands 6 pressure acts. Take you blinkers off and go watch the game again.

Oh, i didnt think you were coming back here, as we are all soft *****

I am interested in people's opinion on Gus and his willingness to get on the ground and win the contested ball. I think we all acknowledge he does not have the natural ability of a number of other ruckmen, but I think he is one of the best ruckman in the AFL at getting to the bottom of packs and not just leaving it to the mids. I love his workrate and hope he continues to learn.
