Anyone else smell and upset?

First of all the thread name was supposed to be : "Anyone else smell AN upset?" Sorry about that.

Anyway, Geelong may be a solid unit, but only on how they preformed last year, there backline and midfield were exceptionally efficient. However, there forward line was not to flash last year, it hindered them from possibly going further than the prelim. I don't think there forward is any better than last year therefore our backline might just hold up come Round 1, regardless of our backlines inexperience.
I am not going into this game expecting a win and Im not sure anyone else can do so either, but I feel winning this game is achievable by the Tiges.

Go Tiges.

i reckon if we play it low key we might surprise some of the more fanciful teams this year...gotta love the element of surprise...

this game is gonna b interesting to c if we have improved not only from last year (wouldnt b hard) but from the wizz cup match...

im more interested in how wallet out coaches bomber, also i believe that the cats have probably had a limited pre season tune up than ourselves...

as wallet stated on wizz cup night we saw the good, bad and the ugly that night...that is how our season will pan out over the year...

we will go into 2006 with lots of good to look forward to and little of the bad and ugly....

The question shouldnt be about do you think we can win, it should be how are we going to beat Geelong?

It's easy to predict garbage, Madtiger explain to me and please when responding open your other eye, how are we going to beat Geelong in Round 1?

I think if we win, it will have more to do with Geelong struggling with their game plan with Ottens playing up forward, and graham missing from the side. He may not have been a scarlett or Harley, but Graham was very useful as he was more than capable of playing down back or up forward. Much like B.Gale. when B.Gale retired we struggled with that extra option as Stafford (his replacement) could only play ruck and forward, and many a times we missed being able to let him play ruck and float across CHB taking marks with an opponent
I'll be tipping Geelong, but sometimes match ups arent what matters, its the performance

Yep definately astro, if there is a chink in the Geelong team atm you could question their preseason form, their forward line structure and the way their forward line hasnt worked that well as a unit.

But what concerns me is if their midfield get enough of the ball and turn it on, our backline isnt that great IMO and could just fold under continual attack.

I think its so important that our midfielders beat their opponents because one Geelong strength is their backline which is still solid and although our forward line looks great on paper it has never lived upto the hype, are they good enough in kicking a winning score against a Geelong strength?

Thats why its important that our midfield beat theirs, as it would give our guys hopefully more than enough chances to kick a winning score, I cannot see it happening unfortunately as we still need time to mature our players in that midfield department.

I opened this thread thinking you were upset because you stank badly...

:D

Anyway, of course we are chance, anything can happen in Round 1, and Geelong will go in as favourites but we are definately a huge chance of winning this match!

take out the ben graham factor like 6-7 goals...who will stand up for them and replace those goals...please dont let it b ottens...

we always get the wrong end of the stick in those situations eg:mccartney comeback match im sure there have been numerous others over the last 20 years....

so its about time we start winning those sort of games...and what better way than beating those pussies and give brad a gr8 send off donuts and all...

Their midfield certainly is going to be our biggest concern. even with their forward structure out of sorts, last year the were able to get about 7-10 goal kickers a week. we really need to keep brown, suga, cogs, bowden in the midfield as much as possible to win this, maybe rotate tuck and krak in their only when needed. the problem is they are bursting with options to rotate through if need be. but i certainly believe that if we are to win, it will require them doing some things wrong, and us to be doing most things right.

Just one other thing.....
In the past i've been hard on our richmond supporters for being a little feral at times - and i stand by alot of that - but in this match - lets take the gloves off and really give it to Ottens. I reckon we can make that giant pussy cry :p

My worry is that although our first few mids are equal to anyone going around in Coughlan, Brown, Johnson and even Bowden. In Geelongs case we will be able to match up well against Cameron Ling, James Bartel, Joel Corey

We are a couple years behind development wise most clubs midfeilds with our rotation types in Tuck, Newman, Hartigan, Deledio, Jackson etc.

While the Kelly, Wojcinski, Milburn, Riccardi, Ablett, Koulouriotis, Mooney etc. may have a year or 2 on us.

if we are to win we will need to kick straight. none of this 12 goals 13 behinds crap. that is my biggest concern, that we are still wasteful in front of goal.

Excellent point - agree

We can definately match them in the middle. Cogs, Tuck and maybe Jackson or Johnson. Richo will give scarlett or Harley a headache just like he did last year. Simmo will also be a big target. We have Brown, Deledio, Tivendale at their feet. They don't have a proven super forward line, so our backman are capable of breaking even. Forget about the past, it's irrelevant, we have a complete new game. I'm telling you we can definately beat this hard working but overrated Geelong team

I give us a chance.

I'm not convinced that Geelong are a class above us player-wise, last year's result was mostly down to commitment, discipline and good coaching, and a really good backline. They could go either way this year.

I think our chances (and most of Richmond's season, really) will come down to how well we can hold down CHF. Last year against the cats, I think Morrison started there against Scarlett (Richo played on Harley in the square), and he got an absolute bath. For the entire first half we struggled to move the ball past the 50. If that happens again, we'll be dead in the water.

However, if Wallace can put together a combination that allows us to start winning the ball on the half forward line, it will make things very interesting.

Rate the midfeild?

With Richo, Dr Pink, Tambling, Deledio, Krak, Cambo etc. its looking good. :)
