Yep I agree with dodgey - we were the two clubs who had the foresight to do this, the other clubs had the same chance but didn't latch onto it until it's become the success that it has, which by the way is only because we are the two biggest drawing clubs!!! Other clubs are kidding themselves if they think they'd draw the same crowds as Ess v Coll gets!

Just out of curiosity when was the first ANZAC day clash between Collingwood and Essendon?

1994 from memory, maybe 1995. It was a draw - Sav Rocca and Salmon both kicked bags, and Buckley attempted a pass to Rocca on the siren (which was spoilt) when he should have probably attempted a long bomb at the goals.

One of the bestgames I have ever seen.

I think Collingwood and Essendon should prove their case once and for all. Let two other teams play on ANZAC Day and we'll play the next week. We'll see how many turn up at the G each week. Then we'll see about that TV deal.

Losing ANZAC Day won't hurt either club at all. It might shut some ignorant coat tailers up though. Time to say F*** 'em! Ask for a random draw and listen to the screams of "where's our Collingwood game???"

Exactly right. this is a "contrived" tradition, only going back some 10 years. In years gone by they used have multiple games on this day involving the whole array of teams. unfortunately we don't own this day, we don't own this tradition, in fact you could say Sheedy hijacked it and as a result have blocked other teams out of their share of history. We just went along for the ride.

further to that, it wouldn't matter when we played Ess, we would still draw a huge crowd, and the atmosphere would be just as electric.

i cant believe im agreeing with pies fans;)

i think it should stay coz the atmosphere is always tops, and the 2 best teams in the afl (since carlton is down the toilet) playing on ANZAC day is just great. and what would we do about the anzac day cup would essendon just keep it since they won it last;)

so if theres one thing i dont want changed its definatly anzac day. if they change it i hope they get all these mental fan going up to afl house and trying to break in! hehe:p

Only if ANZAC Day was a Saturday. In the old VFL (until the mid-late 70's) almost games were played on a Saturday afternoon. Thats one main reason the Swans moved to SYdney - because the Government approved Sunday footy.

So in context 10 years IS tradition because its only been 20 years since we departed from Saturday afternoons, six different matches at six different grounds, etc.

It was the drawn game in 95 that was the first Anzac Day clash. Yes and I do remember how Bucks was sooo quick to be blamed for not going the long bomb in that instance to snatch it.

But later on that year against the Cats at the G, he more than made up for it with a huge bomb from outside 50 in the dying minutes to give the Pies the points!

As far as Anzac Day matches go, I wouldn't mind if we gave it up. We'll always get a huge crowd everytime we play the Bombers, so from a financial perspective, I can see the point of the other whinging clubs.

What I was getting at was that all teams had a chance of being scheduled to play on Anzac day, and I'm (somewhat) sure that at times there was more than one game played on those days other than Sat Anzac days. Could be wrong though

I was one of the unlucky ones to be locked out that day along with thousands more. Reports varied from 5,000 to 10,000 people locked out on top of the 95,000 that got in. Give me two other teams who could get that kind of support at a game.

I agree with MarkT in that we should give it up for a year or two and prove that its not anzac day that makes this game. More poeple turned up for the rnd 22 match than anzac day last year. And Ess and coll matches were always pulling 80,000+ before this match came along.

I honestly couldn't care less if all 8 matches were played on that day, as long as collingwood and essendon still play on that day i'll be happy.

The reason it has become the tradition that it has was simply because of the success of the first one. I dont think anyone who went on that day (1995) would forget the atmosphere, Til this day I have never been to a match with better atmosphere (and ive been too 2 GF's, 2 Prelims). The whole event was perfect, and the result was fitting. If it wasnt a draw I have my doubts as to wether it would still be as much of a success.

Disagree....

Wht should we give up our Traditional game just to shut up some of the Lesser Clubs.

This year as Anzac day is on a Sunday, there are 3 games......ours, Freo V Cats at Subi & Port V Bullies at AAMI. Now I know that it being a Sunday will lessen the effect of ANZAC DAY somewhat, but the AFL had the PERFECT chance to throw anothe game in Melb. up against us, and yet they chose NOT TO..

Goes to prove that what we have built up since 95 can/will NOT be equalled or Bettered, and the AFL are not even going to attempt to try.

I'm perfectly happy going to the Footy on Anzac Day (MY B'Day) Every year and play Collingwood and I feel we don't have to give it up for a couple of years to prove to most sensible and unbiased people that no other clubs could ever match us.

Let each team have their own special day...( St.Kilda V Richmond every Easter Monday...Melb. have a HOME game V You Lot every Queens BDay Mon)...and let some of the other clubs come up with and try and build their own Blockbusters....

But don't let it be to our detriment just because their Marketing dept's weren't quick enough

HAHAHA thats why in the last 3 years between you how many premierships have you won?? I thought that is how we decided who the best team was!! Therefor by this logic Brissy should play on ANZAC day or even a clash of the last years Grand Final
