Yep I agree with dodgey - we were the two clubs who had the foresight to do this, the other clubs had the same chance but didn't latch onto it until it's become the success that it has, which by the way is only because we are the two biggest drawing clubs!!! Other clubs are kidding themselves if they think they'd draw the same crowds as Ess v Coll gets!

Just out of curiosity when was the first ANZAC day clash between Collingwood and Essendon?

I think Collingwood and Essendon should prove their case once and for all. Let two other teams play on ANZAC Day and we'll play the next week. We'll see how many turn up at the G each week. Then we'll see about that TV deal.
Losing ANZAC Day won't hurt either club at all. It might shut some ignorant coat tailers up though. Time to say F*** 'em! Ask for a random draw and listen to the screams of "where's our Collingwood game???"

In years gone by they used have multiple games on this day involving the whole array of teams.

1994 from memory, maybe 1995. It was a draw - Sav Rocca and Salmon both kicked bags, and Buckley attempted a pass to Rocca on the siren (which was spoilt) when he should have probably attempted a long bomb at the goals.
One of the bestgames I have ever seen.

Only if ANZAC Day was a Saturday. In the old VFL (until the mid-late 70's) almost games were played on a Saturday afternoon. Thats one main reason the Swans moved to SYdney - because the Government approved Sunday footy.
So in context 10 years IS tradition because its only been 20 years since we departed from Saturday afternoons, six different matches at six different grounds, etc.
