after attending the anzac day match i can conclude the following things.
i had my doubts at the start of the season but mal michael is still a champion to me
dustin fletcher is as good as he was in the 2000 side.
davey extremly unlucky not to win BOG
Ryder is an absolute star
Rocca is an absolute dud worst 3 bag goal of all time
i didnt think anyone was worse than milne going for cheap goals and free kicks but didak proved me wrong today.
ok they were the positives or none bad essendon things
that was as gooder game as bradley was ever going to play. he just cant cut it.
I hope i now get some support in saying that laycock is pathetic. and i'm not looking for any1 to say that he only had 1 bad game i've been saying this since last year.
but the main one: what are we thinking with the team selection? i have no doubt in my mind that was one of the crucial factors in todays match.
lloyd, lucas, johns, bradley, bolton, ryder, laycock, michael and fletcher.
admitedly ryder and bolton are athletic but coming off a 4 day break that is not what your looking for.

Last thing is i'm sorry that i do not no who was playing on lucas all day but he is a disgrace (his opponent) how can an umpire miss a player pushing him in the back and holding onto him every time he just thinks about going for the ball.

Thoughts on Anzac Day

Firstly, I'm absoloutly sick of losing these big games.

Is it just a simple case that we don't play the MCG well ?
We've only won one game there since 2006.

Sheedy - I've never bagged him before but he is owed one today. Ryder was carving up Travis Cloke in the first half. So why move him into the ruck, take Laycock off and put Bradley on him. No need for it at all. Bradley was picked as a replacement ruckman. For gods sake play him there. And while we're speaking of him.

Bradley - should not be playing in the backline. He's either a tall wingman or a mobile ruckman. At this stage in his development he should not be playing in defense. Believe it or not I still have faith in Kepler. Thrree years ago Rhys Shaw was a laughing stock. Look at him now. He has got ability. Keep faith with him supporters.

Bolton - did an okay job on Swan. I guess we'll get the usual supporters wanting to bag him but he wasn't our worse. He's the 27th best player on our list and with injuries he got a game today. Simple as that.

Watson - teams are now leaving him alone in general play as they know his disposal is not up to scratch. Thats a major concern.

Laycock - thought he did okay for a relatively inexperienced ruckman but still needs to impose himself on the game. He is still a work in progress.

Dyson - for a player that looks like such a beautiful kick he turns it over a hell of a lot. Don't know if we're going to win a premiership with him. Needs ro show Winderlich like improvement, and soon (sorry marcuz) :D

Lloyd and Lucas - both carrying injuries going into todays game and it showed.

Stanton - if every player ran and tried as hard as him we'd never lose a game.

Michael - did his job I thought with the amount of ball getting pumped into their forward line.

Thats it for the moment.

Herritier O'Brien played on Lucas, whilst I didnt watch it live i didn't miss a minute of the telecast and apart from maybe 2-3 occasions O'Brien fairly beat Lucas today!

How you rate michael a champion is beyond me, he has been consitently scored against this year and if Rocca wasnt so poor in front of goals he would of looked alot worse. He hardly made a contest in the 2nd half leaving it to the loose man to cover him unless Rocca stood beside him!

you had to be at the game to see what essendons movement was like. NON existent. michael had a few great spoils and created run of the half back line when we had none. rocca kicked 2 cheap goals. his only earnt goal was the one mistake michael made for the day, failing to punch a reasonably easy marking attempt.

The day = poor decision making, poor skills & a lack of accountability.

Peverill - stop making excuses regarding "hard ball gets" or whatever. A guy who is run down 3 weeks in succession (Carlton = in the goal square, St Kilda = running into our fifty, Collingwood = going for goal) is obviously too slow to dispose of the pill.

Watson - while he earns the hard ball often, it's not generally the scrap in a pack that costs you a goal from your half forward line. That would be the lovely pass inboard onto the chest of the opposition player.

The decision making aspect comes down to the selection comittee as much as anyone - why was Bolton in the side, what did he offer? In all honesty, as much as I rate Courtney Johns, there was no real place for him today.

Accountability - how can Collingwood have 4 or 5 free players when Essendon rebound from their backline, then still manage to find a free bloke when they make a forward 50 entry? The answer (as it was for the Carlton game) is that our players just aren't accountable enough. They chase the easy kick, but don't push back into defence hard enough.

Get a clue.
I have read 2 of your posts now, i wont be reading a third

i must agree with you 100%, but i think you have to give Laycock some time as he is nowhere near good enough atm to be our no.1 ruckman for the time being. Mal Michael was all class today did all he could in defence today and everytime he got the ball seemed to move in slow motion and waltz pass players and hit a target. Fletcher is in amazing form and i must agree with the umpires not going Lucas' way but if he wasnt paid the free kick the first time why did he keep trying to play for it every other time.

is it just me or am i the only that cringes when Watson and Bradley get the ball???

Fair observation but Iwould persist with Mal with the injurys we had out the ball would have been going our way more than theres.
They had an extra mid fielder Jobe Watson who got the ball going there way numerous occassions.
You don't have to be Einstein to work out Keppler Bradley's a dud

If you want to sum up today, think more on a macro than micro level.

We are still not at the level we need to be when it comes to contested, one on one football. That's the reality of the situation. That is where Carlton beat us, and that is where Collingwood beat us.

The flow on effect of this is what you posted, or some of it, but the fact is we were outplayed today and never deserved to win that game.

Collingwood put us under pressure with tight, contested man on man football which not only choked us for periods of the game in our own defensive half, we werent prepared to be accountable ourselves going the other way.

It is on both the team and individual level. We have too many individuals who are simply not strong enough in the contest, and overall as a team we choke up and look like a very ordinary side very quickly.

Big Mal backed out of a few contests he should have partaken in. While he was OK, he made some mistakes a player of his experience should not make, especially when they result in goals (or behinds as was the case with their terrible goal kicking..)

firstly mate what was the 1st post?
2nd what was wrong with what i said there thats my opinion mate feel free to disagree but tell me why not just say i wont be reading another post from you.

Get a clue.

Absolutely spot on - no amount of one-eyedness (I don't even care if that's not a word) can deny these facts. What you've said is the exact reason that we'll continue to struggle against the hardened (both mentally & physically) sides like WCE, Sydney, Adelaide etc.

Give us 2-3 years with our current list though & we'll be bloody close to a flag.

The sum up.... Jobe Watson is friggen GARBAGE. I said it before round1 and a few guys around here kept saying no he's a gun we need him. What do we need him for to kick it to the opposition everytime he touches it and as for bradley, he's one of the worst player i've ever seen at essendon.

Watson should be sent back to the reserves until he learns how to kick.

We beat Adelaide, so we must be doing something right.

Its only his kicking letting him down, overall...he definitely has a football brain.

tell me what is good about watson.
name his pluses and lets see if they actually outweigh the minuses (such as he cant hit a target = his possessions are worthless and he is slow)

He had 11 contested possessions last week, good in close, has the ability to think prior to controlling the ball and at least plays to his strengths. He knows he cant kick to save himself, so more often than not, he'll look for the quick handball around stoppages and nails them. OH, and he finished 2nd in the B+F last season.

Re: Thoughts on Anzac Day

I thought Ryder had to go into the ruck, Bradley was getting owned and laycock couldn't run the whole game there, he couldnt run half. The only other option was to use Fletcher or Bolton, Fletcher was a definite no,no given he was our only solid defender and Bolton isn't exactly an imposing figure in the ruck circle or as athletic as Ryder!

Agree with most other statements except Michael. He has been clearly beaten in 4 of our 5 games now and i don't see how people thought he played well today given Rocca should of had 6-7 on him!

Big deal. We had a heap of injuries last year. Lets see where he'll finish this year if we dont have any injuries. Oh and the games called FOOTball not HANDball
