Should we try and build a side in basically the exact same way Geelong has? Im going to try and relate a possible Best 22 with Geelong's team on Sunday. Note that by no means im comparing skill or anything of the sorts. Just the role they may play in our side, and any similiarities.

(Back Pocket) Tom Harley - Kelvin Moore
The stand up man in our backline. Will assist in any competition in the air, and take alot of marks running back with the flight. Wont rack up huge amounts of stats, but will save our asses many a time, and will earn respect for his gutsy play.

(Full Back) Matthew Scarlett - Will Thursfield
Will get the tough jobs on the toughest opponents, but will be one of many launching pads from defense because of his good foot skills and all round speed. May spend some time off his opponent depending on matchups, but will generally be our major full back.

(Back Pocket) Josh Hunt - Andrew Raines
The smaller defender, but by no means small in size. Will get the job on the medium forward types such as Steve Johnson and Daniel Motlop but will ultimatley be our best small defender because of his relative size. Question marks on his disposal, but always goes in hard.

(Half Back Flank) Andrew Mackie - Chris Newman
Our main launching pad from defense, will have exceptional skills and will be able to help out in a pinch but ultimatley will play loose in order to provide attack from the backline in order to set us up. His good foot skills will be integral in setting up play early.

(Centre Half Back) Harry Taylor - Alex Rance
The inexperienced player, but will benefit from being around quality talls. Will play on the best opposition player mostly every week, and may get a bit of a lesson every so often, but because of the players around him, damage may be limited.

(Half Back Flank) Darren Milburn - Luke McGuane
A quality defender that can play on an experienced forward and beat them, but will most likely end up playing loose in order to provide cover for the other more dangerous forwards or else setting up attack.

(Wing) Cameron Ling - Daniel Conners
Another grunt type player who will eventually end up being the teams number one tagger. Has a reasonable engine that will allow him to run with the most dangerous of players, and on occasion, can cause damage the other way.

(Centre) Jimmy Bartel - Trent Cotchin
The all rounder, will win plenty of the ball and use it effeciently with his excellent skills. Will always come to play, and will be really noticeable when other players in the lineup are being tagged or having a bad day. Will rarely be beaten.

(Wing) Joel Corey - Shane Tuck
The grunt midfielder who will work like a horse and get a huge amount of the footy. Has a good disposal efficiency, and will benefit from being around a good midfield, since he'll be aloud to work without much relative attention.

(Ruck Rover) Gary Ablett - Brett Deledio
The flashy midfielder that will provide the spark for the team. Will have great days in the sun and be difficult to stop by opposition taggers. Dangerous in front of goal and quick enough to make his direct opponent look slow, even if they arent.

(Rover) Joel Selwood - Nathan Foley
Your standard inside midfielder that will carry a midfield and provide the ball to the others. Will put his head over the ball and get the ball alot. May have days where he gets 14 possessions or 30 possessions, but will always contribute in one way or another.

The ones ive left out is our forward line and the ruckmen. The ruck role is obvious, however, i believe that our forwardline will function differently to Geelong's.

It is my viewpoint that Geelong rely on a 2 tall, 4 small combo, with plenty of defensive pressure that keeps the ball locked in the forward line so often that they will always kick a goal eventually.

I reckon that we'll go with a tri-shaped forward line. With Hughes, Polak and Riewoldt as marking options, Edwards and Collard as crumbers, and Morton as our trump card/X-Factor player.

In my opinion, our future Best 22 could line up as something like this;

B: Moore, Thursfield, Raines
HB: Newman, Rance, McGuane
C: Conners, Cotchin, Tuck
HF: Collard, Riewoldt, Edwards
F: Morton, Polak, Hughes
R: Pattison, Deledio, Foley
INT: Polo, White, Graham, Meyer

Obviously theres a lot of if's and but's in this list. And especially since there are a few blokes on this list who have shown very little/absolutley nothing, its all speculation of course. But what are people's thoughts or opinions on this?

pretty good but wtf is wit connors being a tagger???
i would much prefer jackson to be the main tagger IMO.

Im not sold on Jackson and to be honest didnt think we had a reasonable tagger.

I slotted Conners in as a novelty, nothing more. ;)

Well thought out TG, your descriptions are pretty much spot on.

I know Geelong are the best team so they always serve as a measuring stick to the rest of the comp. and something other teams aim to be.

However I don't think we should be constantly trying to compare/model ourselves on Geelong. We need to play like Richmond, create our own dynasty based entirely on our own playing list and how we are going to play. No point comparing players/roles, they are always going to be different to us and have major varations from our game plan.

not sure that polak will play again and you missed out a few players that i would have in that team at the moment but maby not later but that is just your opinion. good job by the way:thumbsu:

Bingo.

Are Geelong subscribing to Brisbane 01-03 model? Not really.

No doubt there are similarities in their success and therefore Richmond's success will be different again with its certain similarities (if it ever comes to fruition).

What I realised from your comparison is that, although we aren't anywhere close to Geelong our list is actually better than I thought. Id thought we'd get smashed in every comparison, but we come out looking a decent side.

An interesting thing to remember about Geelong is they are a team that just clicked. They finished bottom 8 in 06, lost a few games early in 07, and all of a sudden their list clicked and was the best in the league. Sometimes you can never predict where improvement comes from

yeah im not a big fan of jackson but i would prefer him as a tagger ova connors but i would rather connors ova jackson in the team.........
also graham on the bench????? i am certainly not a fan of graham not good in any area. i'd prefer cartledge.

If JON isn't in the long term plans, what is he doing on the list?

Meyer would have to improve a lot

You have go to be shitting me. Question marks? FFS, have you been watching the right dude? No disposal more like it. FFS how can you contemplate comparing day & night? ;)

Good post.

Jackson to tag
Connors to be creative
Shulz as the swing man - can go back or forward depending on what we need. Could switch with Rance and Rance can play as a flanker/on ball if mids need a rest.
Polak out atm due to injury but if he makes it back he is competing with Shulz
Coghlan in instead of Meyer - Meyer may be a find but is unproven at the top level. I'm banking on Cogs making it back.
Putt will be a goal kicker - bring him in as back up ruck and a ver danger forward option. He is as quick and agile as Kruezer and is meant to be pretty good over head.

B: Moore, Thursfield, Raines
HB: Newman, Rance, McGuane
C: Connors, Cotchin, Deledio
HF: White, Riewoldt, Edwards
F: Morton, Hughes, Collard
R: Pattison, Tuck, Foley
INT: Jackson, Shulz, Putt, Coghlan

Interesting that no one has got McMahon in. I know he had some stinkers but he was instrumental in many of the games that we did win.

Typical Cogga response :o. I'll put it in English. Raines :thumbsd:

Agree. As sad as it sounds, I doubt I'll see Polak play again... Just by the whispers.

We shouldn't build a copy of the Geelong side, we should aim to build a better version of the Geelong side.

Geelong (and Hawthorn) have built a side from the ground up based on a certain style of footy they want to play.

Richmond have not done this. You.ve got yourself a nice young core, now pick a style of play and build to play it. You'll be top 2 within 3 years if you do.

Tend to agree with the comment about finding your own style. Geelong's "model" took a good 7 years to build and game plans came and went in that time.

The style of play tends to come from a couple of things in my mind.

- Your personnel. Identify the strengths and weakness of each player on the list. What strengths shine through with the majority? Find that and start developing a style of play that suits that strength. Geelong runs from the back and hits targets and then plays on to get it into a forward line with space. They have strong bodies that can stand up in tackles and spread from the stoppage, fanning out and bouncing the ball around until a player has space.

- good management/luck with injuries. The fact that the best 22 has played together for long periods helps each player "understand" those around him. What can do done, what he can't. There is also confidence that each player plays their role.

Trends change, already teams are trying to utilise Hawthorn's 'zone'. Copying is a short term fix in my view. Geelong looked to Brisbane and saw they needed stronger bodies but Geelong doesn't play like Brisbane because the personnel have different strenghts.

If the tigers find their own style the success will come. :thumbsu:

Sorry if I hijacked your thread. :o

We aren't far away from emulating the success that Geelong are currently experiencing.

I also believe TW has reinvented the model, and people will look at this Richmond side in a few years time and hail it as truly revolutionary.

This will be the realisation and benefit of the 5 year plan, meticiously planned and brilliantly executed by TW and his staff.

Well done to TW and his assistants for making the Tigers the future prototype that all AFL clubs will aspire to :thumbsu:
