Yeah - Danger is 35 years old

The oldies really struggle to come back to full fitness if they have a set back. If either team cop a few injuries it could spell disaster. Still not sure if Holmes and Smith will be enough come finals time to get the job done for the Cats if Danger isn't there, both can be a touch soft at the contest occasionally. Tend to fade in and out for whatever reason.

That’s like saying the full forward position isn’t that important because Tony Lockett and Gary Ablett Snr don’t have a premiership medal, but Tom McDonald and Billy Frampton have one

Not quite.

You swap Gawn and Nankervis, and both of them arguably exchange premiership medals. I do not think you can say the same if you exchange - for example - Ben Brown, Jesse Hogan or Tom McDonald - all three of whom played KPF in the Dee's premiership - for either of Tom Lynch or Jack Riewoldt. Likewise, I don't think you can swap out May and Lever for Astbury and Grimes without losing effectiveness, either.

And if you swapped out Petracca (as good as he is) for Dustin Martin, Melbourne would have three flags and Richmond none.

Some positions are much more valuable than others, which was the point of the post.

Melbourne are the best side ever to be this god awful.

You watch them clinically exit d50, scythe through the midfield and win the ball clear, run through half forward, hit a leading target that is waaaay out, no-one in cooee, but find a way repeatedly to just **** it all the way up. It's like they coach to deliver the ball directly to their opponent 5-10m out from their goals.

I really don't get it. All they need to do is add an additional 10m to their play, and some of those kicks inside 50 that cause it to **** up are shots on goal, and they surely cannot **** as many of those up as they do their entries inside 50.

I don't agree.

They're giving me St Kilda circa 2012-14 vibes; the left overs from the previous tilt are juuuuust good enough that you think the next generation are better than they are without them. They're still kind of in 'we could have another crack within a year or two' mode. Look at their mids - Hopper, Taranto, Macintosh, Nank - and their KPP. The structure is still very old; there are a number of players in there that will be huge outs.

But then, this also feeds into how I felt about their success, namely that they had no idea how they got there and don't really know how to do it again.

There’s some average players out there coasting along for the Dee’s, but by crikey Gawn ain’t one of them.

He is in everything.
