Most of you have probably read this already but this is an article from The West that is related to a current thread. Its by Mark Duffield who I rate very highly as a football journo.

Logical move. Harves is doing a good job with the rebuild but if we were to start the season, say, 0-11 then he obviously doesn't have the coaching nous to get the best out of them. Our team isn't that bad.

Shouldn't be an issue though, I think we'll show some good improvement this year.

Interesting to see Schwabbolly running with the same MO they had here. I really hope that smug bastard Bailey turns out to be a total dud and anchors those cheating pricks (Melbourne, not Schwabbolly) to the bottom for years.

Thanks, hadn't seen that. Makes sense to me, and I do think Rosich plays the media beautifully. And also while I personally want to see the team casting off the 'rebuilding' scenario and instead playing for a 'finals' mentality, I totally agree that the win/loss is a secondary thing, and will be a reflection of other things that Harvey needs to achieve to get another contract.

My take on this story is that Steve Rosich has said they will not be commenting on anyone's contract negotiations - as far as I can see that is the only thing that has been said by Freo and the rest is just made up nonsense as per usual - for all we know they could be negotiating with him right now.

All that Harvey would need to do is have a decent start to the season. Look good in home games, show a decent gameplan, jag an unexpected win, continue to show good player development. Maybe even win a few games. That rating would flip very quickly, and it wouldn't be the hardest task Harvey has ever handled. Most of that should be achievable from incremental improvement.

Whilst we can agree that he along with Bond and Rosich they have turned the club around and it looks rosier than it has ever.

Thats only a start, Harvs needs to show improvement in the squad and progression towards being legitimate finals contenders within the next couple years to be reappointed. Whilst not a sole determinant a reasonable win\loss ratio would be up there along with the quality of performance and coaching performance.

I dont think we can risk getting caught up in the rebuilding excuse we need to start getting wins and respect on the field.

To me, it is a no brainer, the club is finally in a position on and off the field to start living up to its potential.

I hope they are. But I was more optimistic just after we had recruited Croad, MacPharlin, Farmer, Simmonds, Polak, Schammer, Headland, Bell and Black. Things looked very rosey. Croad and Black were never at the club at the same time. Plus by the time Black had come back, Croad and Simmonds were of course gone.

See, I don't quite get that.
Especially in the forward half.
To me it is more important to have KPD's than KPF's as the rotation through the forward line is far more prevalent in todays game.
Unless you have a Brown or Riewoldt, and of course we hav Pav, the game is played less and less as a kick long and crumb game and more and more by kicking to that elusive, quicker player who is hard to match up on.
We have those players IMO. Mayne, Fyfe in time, truffles when he comes back plus plenty of good marking mids who will rotate through the hff's.
Conversley you need a few KPD's to handle the aforemention superstars but after that you need flexibility to match up on the "new" type of forward structure.
We have the depth at present to cover the KPD's and seem to have recruited well of late to cover their eventual departure..think Silvagni.
Couple that with flexibility of defenders like Hayden, Duffield and now McPhee and I see the formation of a very, very good squad.

Yea, I would agree to an extent. But then I'm a glass half full not a half empty guy.

This rebuilding phase has to produce good players and a solid even playing squad across the positions and theres no certainty thats going to happen.

Success is not guaranteed by just getting rid of the old players and starting again building thru high draft picks. That is going to take time, skilful recruiting and may result in a plateau in performance before we go for the peak.

But we have a solid core we can build upon now. Theres skills we can exploit now and areas where we are still lacking in top 22 and depth.

I'm guessing that you are angling this way because of the compromised draft due to the expansion teams.
And that is fair enough, but everyone who has a middle aged squad is in that boat..
And I don't necessarily buy the whole "age of squad" thing. Our average is compromised because of the vast gaps between youngest and oldest. Whereas a team like Melbourne don't have anyone older than davey(?)
Also we have an outstanding history of picking fantastic rookies that have made the top flight and 3rd and 4th round draftees whose performance belied their draft pick. Being an isolated state has its advantages I suppose.
If Houghton can reproduce at AFL level, in time of course, what he did for the Demon colts he will be a very good player.
I really do rate him very highly.
Throw in the likes of Bucovaz, Barlow, Johnson is still young enough, Mayne is a kid, Mora could go forward in time, Pearce if he gets a run and the previously mentioned Truffles and I reckon that we look more than OK going into 2014.

If our star players don't sign untill after the end of the season, why shouldn't the coach be given the same treatment.

This mid-year review process is absolute crap and I can't see how it add's any value to our club or culture.

As far as rating the guy goes, however it be based completely on the list from the moment he took control...Ignore ladder position for now and let's just say if we are seeing improvement, he's the man for the job.

Nothing Harvey has done has suggested to me he is short sighted, which is a major plus considering our history.

Does anyone know what these targets might be?

All I can think of is are things like increase in the number of effective disposals and tackles (particularly in the second half of a game), decrease in clangers, ability to stick to the game plan (as judged by the assistant coaches).

I think there is a fair chance Harvey will be fired even if you have a good season. He is a holdover from the previous regime. Rosich and Bond will want their own hand-picked guy.
