Great way to finish his career. He can look back at his time in footy with a great deal of satisfaction and pride.

One of footy's greatest quiet achievers. The sort of player you love having at your footy club.

Congrats to Marcus on a super career. He is really now one of the all time greats.

One of the all time greats is a bit far fetched, unless you just mean of Bris. Good, consistent, dependable player who got the job done with no fuss is how i'd describe him.

Brilliant note to retire on.

Queensland born and a quiet achiever.

I will miss you Marcus, you were one of my favourites and for many years.

Solid and dependable, you will be missed on the ground, you can bet on it.

Congratulations Marcus Ashcroft #10, on a fantastic career.

Congratulations on a great career indeed- I don't know a better way to retire from the game. One of the league's quiet achievers. All the best Marcus.

Well done to him, stuch it out through the hard times and reaped the rewards in the last few years. Great effort.

Congrats Ashcroft.

Now, was he the current AFL player (pre-retirement) who was the earliest Brisbane player?

If so, who's the next?

Off the top of my head, it would be Shaun Hart... although Lynch started with Fitzroy, so you could put a case for him (and he's been around longer than Ashcroft anyway). I don't know what your definition of "Brisbane" is.

I reckon that sums him up perfectly. He was an important part of our side and will be missed, but I wish him all the best for the future. :)

Ashcroft debuted in R9-1989 (94-point loss to North at the MCG) and Hart debuted in R1-1990 (59-point win over Richmond at Carrara). Lynch debuted for Fitzroy in R3-1988 (51-point loss to Footscray at the Western Oval).

Ok, well I meant Brisbane Bears ... I mean, eventually there's going to be no players in the AFL who once played for the Brisbane Bears FC (same with Fitzroy FC). So it's gonna be a special honour for whichever players bring down the curtain on that era.

choppers falls into the johnny blakey category. never a star, but through absolute professionalism squeezed everything out of his potential. never starred but never real ordinary. reliable. every team needs em.

Mr. Consistency, thanks for the memories. Enjoy your well-earned retirement (after 318 games) knowing that you are a part of football history. You are the boast both of Brisbane Lions AFC and your home State of QLD. Well done.

One of my very favourite players outside the Eagles for many, many years.

I said last week when he was in doubt for the GF that it would be a shame if he missed because players like him deserve all the success going.

He saw the highest highs and the lowest lows in his time, Congrats to Marcus on an excellent career that he can look back on in true pride.

Apparently he holds the record for playing the most amount of games without being reported or suspended.

All the best Ashcroft.

How things have changed in Brisbane over time (although 1989 was probably one of the bad-news Bears' better years)

Congratulations on a wonderful career. There was probably a time when success looked a fair way off, but Ash stuck through it and reaped the rewards. What a way great note to leave the game on.
