Chris Woakes has retired from international cricket. Not surprising given his age, injuries and how he tours but he probably would have flown in for the 2nd test as an injury replacement you just know it. Tbf he had a pretty dignified exit on the field at least.

Classy retirement statement from Woakes. Made the most of his talent I feel and played the game in good spirit, when not all those around him did so.

I also think the size of our grounds here will play into Australia's hands. I think you're a bit harsh on Duckett and Brook though. Crawley, on the other hand, has been persisted more than anyone else purely because apparently his game is suited to Australian pitches. I hope Cummins et al put him back in his box.
I can see Brook doing well, has all the shots even if we don't provide the flat wickets he really desires he should still make some decent runs. Duckett will make runs too, played here in the Big Bash and had no issues and Bazball isn't far from that.

You think they'll drop Webster?

I think we'll pick the same side we did in WI, but maybe with Konstas out and Labu in, assuming Weatherald hasn't scored a billion runs.

I think that's right, can't drop Webster surely, if it's out of him and Green surely Webster plays. Though Green is batting in the top order at the moment, might change things, who knows.

Getting excited first round of the shield starts this weekend :)

Might see if I can get down to the WACA this weekend

looking forward to seeing Konstas score some runs and greenie back bowling

Big shield games coming up the bat off begins..Konstas Labs Weatherald all looking to score runs

Lets go lads

Bit of a whinge

Come on Cricket Australia get your bloody scheduling sorted!!!

We have the biggest shield games coming up leading to arguably the biggest Ashes in modern memory....and we have lads off playing T20 In New Zealand...and lads off playing against India A..... All state teams are affected with player availability

Now I am not against the boys getting exposure in Aus A int cricket but come CA you could've. scheduled these before the start of our Aussie domestic Shield summer

If you aren't available for every shield game before the tests start you shouldnt be considered for selection, simple as that

I see Brook having a Jaiswal-like series. Big scores followed by low scores. His technique around off-stump is suspect and he doesn't play the short ball particularly well. But he (and Crawley) will come off sometimes. Assuming Pope hasn't worked heavily on his play against overspin (he did score a big 196 against IND, suggesting that he can play side spin well-enough), he'll face trouble with Lyon. Doesn't cope with Starc's inswingers well, either.

Duckett will be a candidate for an early edge on pitches with any bounce, provided we put in multiple slips to counter that late cut he likes using. T20 doesn't really expose his weaknesses because slips are far less important in T20s than they are in Test matches.

what does the squad look like? the assumption is that cummins won't be playing all the tests, and i'd hazard a guess the other geezers bowling pace will need a rest at some stage too.

beau webster did have a minor ankle injury this morning, but beyond that there's a number of players vying for a limited number of spots (by my count, 2, maybe 3).

Big 3 will play first Test, then I reckon they'll all have a spell one at a time between 2nd and 4th Tests and then if all fit will see the series out... depends how close it as well... I think Australia will wrap it up 3-0 myself.

Wetherold and Hunt surely the 2 favourites now to slot into the openers role.
Interesting to see Lehman do well as well.
Green far from a walk up start imo and needs to perform

I think Henry Hunt or Matt Renshaw will get it, Weatherald an outsider IMO.

Khawaja
Hunt/Renshaw/Weatherald
Smith
Green
Head
Webster
Carey
Starc
Cummins
Lyon
Hazlewood

I'd expect a rotation with Boland and Neser coming into the side at times, I reckon Neser will play the second test in Queensland.

Whatever your preference may be or whether you agree with it or not, Green is as close to a walk up start as anyone. His position is in no way under pressure, provided he keeps his body right.

Khawaja
Labs
Smith
Head
Green
Carey
Starc
Cummins/Boland if injured
Lyon
Hazelwood

I'd bat Green at 3 and have Webster at 6.
