Ashes 25/26

Alex Carey has been spectacular behind the stumps today; a huge influence on Australia's fortunes in the field.

By choosing to stand up to the stumps to the medium pacers Carey upset the rhythm and plans of England's batters during a period where they threatened to take the game away.

His actual glovework was razor sharp and he was rewarded with 3 catches, 2 of them pretty spectacular.

When Carey first started making his name I was under the impression that he was an attacking batsman who wore the gloves as an afterthought. Maybe he was early doors.

But his work as Australia's #1 Test wicketkeeper has absolutely upheld the standards of the very best custodians Australia's ever fielded; definitely in the argument for the best I've seen in my lifetime.

After seeing how England performed against India, I’m convinced they’ll be taking the urn off us.

Hard to find any weaknesses in their batting who will destroy our ageing bowling attack.
On the flip side, the only reliable batsmen we have is Carey. If Wood and Archer are fit, they’ll tear through us.

We could be looking at a repeat of the 10/11 Ashes - concerning times.
I feel like reminding people how this thread started.

No resting, sticking with players in form. There’s a match to win - win this and we win the series, draw it and we retain. They can rest later.

And the bowlers are hardly cooked, it’s been four short innings with the ball.

Decision to pick Neser for the Gabba wicket over Lyon vindicated.
Would be looking to do the same again in Adelaide by selecting Lyon. Adelaide should have a spinner.

I still think we should be playing Renshaw. Pick him while he is in form and let him ease himself back in team.

Don't think we will though and at least with Khawaja out there is no pressing need to make a change.

This has aged, or is aging well. I know people will rightly say Ashes cricket in England is extremely compelling but South Africa vs Australia in South Africa across 2009, 11, 14 and 18 was every bit as compelling. South Africa have also been competitive on a regular basis here since their return to international cricket.

Pretty interested in the changes England decide to make

I think they’ll need a spinner and it seemed pretty clear that Stokes did not have any trust in Jacks to be that guy, even though their seamers were bowling short, wide balls every over. Bashir sucks but I would assume he’ll come in and Stokes will actually bowl him

Been suggested that the English thought they should have gone with Tongue in this past Test and will be selected in Adelaide. I think Atkinson has bowled pretty well at times (generally when bowling in tandem with Archer) but hasn’t been getting wickets. Carse I think has been rubbish most of the time but does have vigour and has somehow been taking wickets. Both have been useless with the bat despite coming in with decent reputations with the bat

Think Pope has to be replaced for this Test, see no other way around it. Think this is probably the best it could go for him, has made three decent starts (is actually their third leading runscorer hilariously, and Crawley is one of the ones ahead of him). Has looked good at times but it always feels like he’ll throw it away because he can’t deal with balls on that sixth stump line. Looks frazzled mentally and technically. Bethell is the only back up in the squad so presumably gets the chance. Who knows if he’s up to it, seems to have been picked on vibes so far. Jacks batted well I thought, looked competent in the first innings then played a dumb shot against Starc and fought well in the second innings. They won’t want to change Root/Brook/Stokes in the middle order though and it will be a big ask to have Jacks at 3. Not sure he’s that capable

For most Aussie and Poms, no series will ever come close to an Ashes series.

Yeah personally, I wouldn’t. He basically hasn’t played this series at all (bowled two overs in Perth) and we have completely steamrolled them. I wouldn’t change what’s working. I wouldn’t drop any of Starc, Boland or Neser based on what they’ve done to the English, and obviously Cummins comes in.

A lot of what Lyon does is late in the game when pitches deteriorate, and games against England don’t last that long because of their laughable approach to batting.

They will play him, but personally I wouldn’t. He can sook all he likes, nobody has a god-given right to a spot in the team (except maybe the captain) and I’m not a fan of changing the make-up of a team that is slaughtering the opposition.

Melbourne takes well to spin from day 3 onwards generally. Lyon should play the rest of the series.
