Assistant Coaches

i would've loved to see McGovern made accountable too, seeing him being able to go where ever he wanted just about made me spew

Yep. Both times he was forced to either defend 1 on 1 or was bodied out, we got a mark inside 50.

Obviously the Eagles look to structure up so he is free, and you can't be successful every time. But it is just ****ing inexplicable how many times it was put on his head.

And it's not a new issue - I don't mind a 50m bomb to the spot from a highly congested clearance. I do mind it when a player has a gap and a second or two to look at other options, as was often the case on Saturday. It's at the point where it has to be a conscious coaching issue.

Call me crazy, I have a left field suggestion. What about James Hird as an assistant. Make him the forwards coach. Forgetting about the drugs debacle, he was one of the best forwards to ever play the game. Sooner or later he will get back into the game, get him out of the Victorian bubble.
Shoot me down:):):)

I would literally stop supporting Fremantle. It's a disgrace that Hird's not been banned for life from anything remotely AFL related.

+1 The only remorse is being sorry that he was caught. Some people aren't fit and proper persons, I don't want someone that can't learn and move on from mistakes as a leader, let alone someone who would trade other peoples health for his own glory.

Alright Alright I did ask to be shot down. Stability in any organisations management/coaching is a good thing but clearly our forward line is not working, and I dont believe it is just a personal issue. Our leading patterns are horrible, other than Cam Mcarthy (This is natural to him), we rarely have players at the fall of the ball at marking contests and we constantly have multiple players fly for the same mark. This to me is all coaching related. I believe we need someone who truely understands the art of playing in the forward line. As much as I hate them the Eagles forwards are bloody well drilled to block and create space for JK. I know we dont have a big bloke like him but we have no system. Steve Johnson has always had good wraps on him but I believe he is stepping into a roll at GWS, geez I would love to be a fly on the wall if he was coaching Ballas. Anyone else got a suggestion for a forwards coach??

If I had a choice, Justin Longmuir. Done really well making a WC forwardline very dangerous with really only Kennedy as an elite player to work with.

Would have to steal him off WC though. Might be looking to leave if WC go into a rebuild and if we offer him enough he might come over. He is an ex-docker after all. I don't really know how coaching contracts work so I'm not sure if this is even possible.

Unlikely as anything, but would be a huge get if we could do it.

Nick Riewoldt is another one that has a thread for him somewhere on this very topic.

Dean Solomon is another ex-freo player that seems like a decent coach. Not sure if he can be a forward coach though.

He's got his coaching accreditation up to level 4 or something, plus experience in coaching. I'd grab him in a heartbeat for "a' coaching role, I don't know if he's a forward coach or not though.

7 years in gold coast no result I doubt he will be any good .

In general, the names always tossed around for forward coaches are the big blokes. They have a physical advantage over everyone else, so while there are mediocre/average/elite tall forwards, it doesn't mean that an elite tall forward is ipso facto better at the tactics/strategies for coaching forwards than somone smaller. I reckon Harry Taylor whenever he retires would be an excellent forward or defence coach, he's a smart footballer rather than just playing on instict or just being the biggest and strongest, knows both sides of the craft defence/offence - and while he stayed in Geelong because of his missus, who knows, he might be enticed back west.

Of ex dockers... Again, not out of the game yet... But for smart footballers who had leadership skills and got more out of their game than their skill levels and/or height/size, both Mayne and de Boer. You don't have to be the best on ground to be an elite coach - Clarkson for example can only be described at best as a solid footballer.

Probably, skills coach and forward coach get conflated in peoples minds, they are separate. I kinda thought Hale would help our tall forwards with body work, even while undersized for the role, cam and kersten are underperforming for pack marks, particularly annoying since there are so many pack situations in our gamestyle. Flip the coin though, while Sandi is Darcy's private mentor, Hale would be his coach, seems to be doing alright.

A machine is broken, doesn't mean all the cogs are stuffed. GAJ would by definition be an average player at best if that was the case.
Well Gaj won brownlow with Geelong and GC ,how can you said he is an average player ? Did Solo win anything with freo or any players from GC said his coaching are any good .

I guess I need to paraphrase.

I did not say that GAJ was/is average.
You said of Dean Solomon "7 years in gold coast no result I doubt he will be any good"
What I said - or tried to say - was that with that analogy, GAJ would be at best average.
Obviously GAJ is not average. As for Solomon, maybe he is a waste of sapce - maybe he is an exceptional coach, but just because Gold Coast is woeful, it doesn't automatically mean that all the cogs in the machine are woeful - GAJ as an example.

The ex players I would love back at the club in an Assistant role include Langmuir, Barlow, Pavlich, MacPharlin and de Boer.

Not sure why we would chase St Kilda or other club champions unless they have shown something as assistant coaches already.

Riewoldt's name's thrown up because he has a good relationship with Ross.

I fully understand that, but I don't think it is enough. If it happened no problem for me.

The other player I think would be a decent coach is Dawson. His onfield leadership when he and Lyon first arrived was impressive.

When Ross arrived, didn't we lose our defensive coach in the first few months? Apologies if I recollect wrongly, it was ages ago. Nonetheless, our defence got up to speed and firing quickly. Might not have been an official leader in defence, but I got the feeling that Zac was instrumental in bringing our defenders up to speed with the Ross game plan.

Yes, thats it exactly.

Curley left during Lyons first pre-season with us. I can't remember his role, maybe mids or defence as you suggest.

He would inject a lot of experience into the Coaching team.

It'd be good to bring in a good experienced assistant and a highly rated newbie to the club. Unless we can bring McPharlin back to the club (highly rated at East Freo I believe) I think we are mostly looking at outside FFC for the new guy.
