Assistant Coaches

I'd like to see Hodge as my first choice for assistant coach. He's got that bit of an anti-social streak with a good footy brain. Will likely be a successful senior coach if he goes down that path

McVeigh would be much better IMHO but I don't know why we don't cull what we have and get both. Grab two proven leaders and champion players who are fresh out of the game coming from two different but successful systems. They would bring a lot of relative and effective information / ideas which would be perfect for a rebuilding list.

I feel like money this off-season should be thrown around for coaching upgrades not players.

Im not sold on McVeigh but he sure couldn't be any worse than our current lot and we could use more footy smarts across the board

Why aren't you sold on him? McVeigh is one of the smartest players to have played the game in the last 15 years. His name doesn't get mentioned as much as it should be among the greats of the last decade. He is an extremely good ball user with near perfect decision making with what he does on, around and off it.

If I had a choice I would rather have our players sitting down and listening to McVeigh break down his thought process and reasoning behind what he did in every situation as a player. Gaining those sort of deadly smarts to pass on is a goldmine in today's game.

Yeah maybe. I've seen him lose when Ballas got under his skin so he's not the best example of footy smarts at times. I rate Hodge higher

Hmmm I wouldn't isolate 120 minutes in a 15 year career when comparing him to someone. Honestly I would be happy with either one of them, getting both seems like an overkill dream and we could almost lock in finals next year just based on those appointments.

Maybe. It depends how much influence assistant coaches have at Freo

Being a star employee doesn't make you a good manager. I'd still rather pick up an experienced coach, either with proven experience at league level, or one of the seniors from the accreditation course like Stewey Dew or Matthew Nicks.

Picking up a fresh graduate who has to learn how to teach people skills they may have innately just 'done' isn't a recipe for success. Look at Guerra during his first pre-season with us.

A major shake-up is expected of Collingwood's football department, with Brenton Sanderson and Brad Gotch the only assistant coaches contracted beyond this season.
Scott Burns is to join Hawthorn, while Robert Harvey is understood to be weighing up offers from three AFL clubs

Anyone think Harvey is likely for us?
Yeah think Harvey would be a good get (based on the way he played the game)

Harvey was a bloody champion and comes across well but that's all I know.
The Fist is a lot brighter than his playing style might suggest, but our defence is going to be a very different place than it has been with the new emphasis on launching speedy counterattacks.
Too hard.
No idea.

If he's not considered good enough at the Pies I wonder if he'd be a good fit for us? I'd prefer we went for someone with a good record, he sounds like just more of the same as we've got to me.

I want someone that hasn't come straight from playing to coaching. We did that with Guerra and Hale and looks a poor decision. Someone from another club with new ideas and perspective and someone not afraid to tell a few home truths about how we're perceived by other clubs and what they target us when playing against us.
