Heading into year 12 this year and all this stuff goes right over my head. I have many questions:

1. Is it better to do 12 units or 10 (my year 11 marks are PDHPE 89, Advanced English 82, Business studies 79, Biology 76, Economics 70, Mathematics 43). I'm keeping maths and considering dropping economics or business but is it really worth it. I need an ATAR of 65 to get into my course here in Albury but 80+ do do it in Melbourne, which my parents aren't keen on, so I'm aiming for a high ATAR to cover all possibilities.

2. Since I got such a poor mark for Mathematics does it mean I've failed since it was under 50%? And does this mean that I haven't passed year 11? I wold say 60% of people in my grade would have been under 50%.

3. If I get a higher ATAR will it help me in getting a job. I need to do a masters or PhD to go anywhere in sport science and I don't know if a high ATAR helps me to be able to do this after I finish my undergraduate degree. Te industry is also very competitive so I was wondering if having a high ATAR holds me in good stead to get a job with an insttute or sporting club.

Thanks in advance.

It's better to do 12 units, you get an extra 0 to 5 points to your overall ATAR for a sixth subject (your subject score will be between 0 and 50)... unless you feel that the unit you are continuing is one you dislike.

It's better to do a year 12 subject in year 10 tbh, so you end up with 11 units.

I doubt you have failed VCE due to failing a year 11 Maths subject, but I'd check with your school just to be sure.

Did you get an 'S' on your report?

If so you passed.

An ATAR means nothing once you have entered university, seriously.

But you should aim for the highest possible and definitely move to Melbourne, it would be a great experience.

I'm from NSW so we don't have a VCE, is it the same as the HSC?

I'll have to check my report but I doubt they would fail 60% of the people doing the course.

And I have to move to Melbourne or a bigger city to do my PhD I don't know if it would be better to go straight away or do my first defree at home and be with my mates. Parents would prefer me to stay at home because I have no money saved so they don't want to pay for accommodation.

There's no way you can fail the entirety of year 11 simply because you got 43 in maths. All that would probably happen is that the school recommends you don't continue it in year 12, but in the end it's up to you. Fwiw I'm pretty sure 43% on a methods or spesh exam in year 12 is actually quite decent and would get you a reasonable study score.

As for doing 12 units or 10, if you haven't already completed 2 then I'd just stick with 10. The workload is far more manageable. I couldn't imagine doing year 12 with 6 subjects on my plate. The 6th only contributes an extra 10% anyway so imo you'd make that up through being able to study harder for your other 5 subjects.

In VCE methods last year, a 43% would get you a c+ on the non calc paper, and also the calc paper. On exam one you needed one mark out of 40 to pass, and on exam two which has 22 multiple choice questions you needed 4 out of 80...

I'm a current yr12 student, and doing the HSC too.
To answer your questions one by one..

1. If you're doing poorly in maths (43 is pretty poor no offence) I advise you drop it. Or if not keep your 12 units until your first assessment and see which is worse - ecos or maths. I personally for yr 11 had a really shocking economics mark and a shocking maths mark and when I decided to choose 3U Hist and drop 4U english it meant that I had to keep one (also dropped bio cause it was boring). I went with the one I had interest in, but also try not to forget even if you are interested in maths, youve missed out on a LOT of foundation earlier in the years. Whereas last year I went from last in ecos (didnt try) to 3rd at a very academic and competitive school.

2. Your prelim mark wont affect your ability to get into a yr 12 course - they only care if it's an extension course... that was what it was at my school.

3. ATAR counts for nothing after you get into uni.

Hey Gee_Dub, I'm from WA so we have ATAR, not VCE. My maths in year 11 was the same as yours.

This will not at all effect your ATAR score, your chance of passing High School. Even if you got a 0 for your maths, your other scores will bring it up.

You need a C grade average to pass high school. You obviously have that.

Don't stress!

----

Anyway, i'm in year 12. Some pretty stressful times should be had, but i'm taking a very cavalier attitude into my exams. I'm doing around two hours study a day. I realise I should do much more.

If all goes just below average, I'll be getting into Curtin at least (an ATAR of 70). Again, this is an estimate of moderate mediocrity. If i'm going to try harder, I could push for UWA. If I put in serious effort, I will get into UWA easily.

But, say I get my second or third preference: Journalism at Curtin (70.0), and Journalism at Murdoch (60.0) respectively.

But my plan is to go to Melbourne for my second year of university. And i'd like to go to La Trobe or Monash, who have ATAR's of 80.0 for my desired course.

Would I be able to transfer pretty easily and pretty comfortably?

Is it possible to even change universities halfway through the year?

Any help would be seriously great.

I don't know anything about changing unis or anything like that, but last year I was doing what you are doing this year. I worked pretty hard and ended up with a pretty nice ATAR, got an award from school which meant a little bit of cash and guaranteed entry to uni. An ATAR of 80 is very easily achieved if you want to work hard enough, I ended up with one of just over 96 and I think my best four subject averages were about 75-80% which is by no means impossible. It feels easy to slack off and just cruize to an ATAR in the 70's which is fine if your fine with it, but you might as well maximise your opportunities in the future by getting as high a score as possible. As others have said it means nothing now at uni, but you can learn some good habits from working hard at school and you never know some handy cash might come your way if teachers notice what you have put in.

Good luck with you exams, by the way what was your first choice?

Another thing Gee Dub, as you have post graduate degree aspirations and are drawn to umel (similar to my current position), have you thought about transferring there to finish your post grad? It's what I'm going to do after weighing up a lot of options, and it's just better in case I end up switching courses and realizing umel is not the best place for it. Also for financial and social reasons it might be better.. Just a suggestion :). I want to do psychology at usyd and finish my masters, honors, phd and maybe another degree (if I get that far) at umel but my parents are reluctant to have me move to another city... Another way is to get a scholarship at umel to take away financial pressures. I might just reevaluate my options for next and do end up getting a scholarship of merit (99 fml!) at umel, but I'd still prefer the post grad way... Just a thought cause this way would appease your parents and take some pressures of you.

Anyway I'm ditching all forms of social contact for the next few days for the HSC! GOOD LUCK FELLOW YEAR 12s!!!

As a first year Curtin Journalism student, i'd stay away from it tbh
Not saying Curtins course is bad (because in reality its one of the better places to do journalism/communications) but given 1/5 graduating journalists get jobs, you'd want to make sure your good

Yeah, I understand how popular a career pathway it is, and how hard it is to get into the industry.

That's why it's my second choice. I'd prefer to do English (which only UWA offers under their Arts degree).

But, is it easy to go from Curtin to UWA? Or, Murdoch to UWA?

Getting into journalism is less about doing a degree and more about making contacts, putting your writing out there, being innovative and working hard outside of school hours to make yourself heard by hiring industries. Maybe pursue it as a serious hobby?

Got my predicted ATAR today:

67.87%

Absolutely gutted. Was realistically hoping for a push toward 80, expecting a mid 70's. Philosophy gets scaled down 15%, which ruined my average - and with that average, I would've been getting close to, if not, 80's.

Anyone do Philosophy last year? What was your scaling like?

One of my mates is an A to B+ grade students and his predicted ATAR was 67. So I wouldn't be taking those too seriously. I was told I'd get 85 despite averaging 90+ in Unit 3 & 4 SACS.

Where do you get these predicted ATARs from??

Not 'ATAR Calc' I hope??

But you're better off doing a degree in journalism to increase your chances than sitting around doing nothing about it ? Poker is a hobby, doesn't mean everyone gets on the ESPN.

Well personally, I've already written several articles for several websites. Both music, and football/soccer websites. I consistently write album reviews on two websites. I'll have much more time on my hands next year, so this writing is only going to increase. Personally, I think a degree in Journalism/English, and consistent writing for a variety of sources is as much as I can do. Obviously, the more you write, the better you'll improve (as you get pieces rejected, etc.).

Anyone else in year 12 right now? My study 'rituals' are getting insaaanely lazy...

No exam study for me as of yet. Still got a SAC to go tomorrow and Friday, then from Sunday I'll start to tear shit up.

My motivation is dead, almost literally. Only marks that have stayed constant are Bus Man (A+'s) and English (B-B+). I've got other subjects which I've done pretty well in all year and just faded towards the end to the state where I'm actually getting concerned (ie. As/A+s in midyears down to 55% for my last sac ).

Had my last SAC for the year today so I'm happy they're all over and done with, but I just want the next 36 days to be over.
