I've always found that if you're truly not doing anything wrong, the police always leave you alone.
That's not really true. In most states police have a lot of discretionary powers these days for preemptive searches, and they use them. My brother and I are similar ages, both quiet respectful law abiding citizens, very similar in manner etc. I have never been bothered by the police. He is frequently hassled and occasionally searched, on public transport and elsewhere - a number of times when I've been with him.

Why? I'm a buttoned down, straight-arrow lawyer and look it. He's a ska musician with piercings, tattoos and fashion sense to match.

Police are mostly reasonable blokes, but profiling happens.

Got a lift home from a cop one night when me and a mate were walking around at about midnight. Within half a minute of getting into the car, he'd a) high-fived a drunk guy from a party across the road out of his window and b) decided he couldn't be bothered getting out of the car to close the back door, so he accelerated and sharply braked to try to get it to slam closed instead. ****ing legend :thumbsu:

Doesnt sound like you gp :D

Good to see some positive discussion of police for a change :thumbsu: Being a police officer would be among the more difficult professions in our society. Not only do you frequently have to work long, unsociable hours, but you're expected to behave perfectly and set the example for everyone else while dealing with those whose behaviour is often anything but. There may be some bad apples in the force (as there are in all areas and professions) but credit to those who do achieve the balance of unholding the law with common sense and decency and maintaining their integrity.

I've never had any direct dealings with the police while they've been on duty (met a few people who work as police during my life, and they were as good a blokes as anyone else I've met), so I can't comment on their professional conduct in that sense, but as far as the "police harrassment" issue goes, I've got nothing bad to say about them there either. There seem to be a lot of people around that either fear the police or strongly distrust them, and make a big deal about the police "targeting" them when they're doing "nothing wrong". I've argued on BigFooty in the past about this issue, and I'm not sure how it works other countries, other states of Australia, or even for other people (I've never heard any stories of or witnessed police doing anything inappropriate outside of their lawful given powers though), but I've always found that if you're truly not doing anything wrong, the police always leave you alone. I'm not saying this from the perspective of a sheltered shut-in either; I got out and live my life at all hours of the day and night as much as anyone else. I've just always found that if you're not doing anything wrong, and aren't putting yourself in potentially law-bending or law-breaking situations (hooning in your car, getting in fights, etc.), you simply won't attract police attention.

Your a rooky cop :D

God speed to you :thumbsu:

Have a couple friends get bashed by the cops on separate occasions.... One deserved it but the other didnt

I get out more than you :thumbsu:

The average uniformed cop is usually a decent human being that went in to the force with noble intentions. Usually they do the job for a few years before becoming jaded with the realisation that the system is a racket, set up for the benefit of the wealthy, and that they have unwittingly become lap dogs for the state and oppressors of the citizenry via the enforcement of misrepresentative laws that the people do not want.

They came in as decent people, and by and large, they leave as wiser decent people.

However, the ones that knowingly embrace the system and then graduate in to plain clothes suits are generally liars, bullies and a law unto themselves. They are corrupt. There's a sprinkiling of decent human beings in there, but they are definitely in the minority.

The system, by its own nature, favors the sociopathic tendencies.

This is the truth.

If there is too much truth in this post for you, then it is your problem, not mine.

Was drunk with a mate walking home from a bar in our hometown, stopped in at maccas and were sitting out the front eating our food, couldn't be f'ed paying for a taxi or walking then a cop car pulled up and got their cheap ass food. Asked them for a ride, they told us to tell them a funny story, told em one about one of our mates getting rejected by this ugly chick, they had a laugh and then told us to get in the back and took us right to the front door of where we were staying 10 mins away.

On the other hand I've had a mate get pepper sprayed for trying to pull one of his mates who was bashed and on the ground out of the fight that was happening. Also was driving in the hometown and there had been a few road deaths in the previous few months so there was some special task force down, got done on my way to indoor soccer for my toe ball obstructing my number plate by one of these guys. Didn't just tell me to take it off or anything, $120 and 2 demerit points straight up. At the time my girlfriends dad was a cop and he had driven my car and never said anything and was about 1 month after getting a roadworthy as well. Thought i was pretty stiff.

i had cops in melbourne call me an a-hole once at 1am in the street... took the last train home and i was literally only about a 2 minute walk from my front door... they pull up to the curb in an unmarked car and ask about what i'm doing/where i'm going etc, that they were the police... felt very unexpected, they showed no ID....

admittedly, had a few drinks that night, so felt annoyed by their presence, but didn't tell them off or anything... i'm not one to have had any dealing with cops, but at the time, i wanted them to leave me alone because i really had nothing to hide, gave them some id after i initially was reluctant...

they ask me where i was from (yank accent), and i said "AUSTRALIA!" (which is my home country)... they get out of the car and give me hard time, checked my bag, thought i had something to hide, said there was a robbery.... torch right in my eyes, saying they were after suspects in a robbery in neighborhood and i was wearing black and i had the feeling i was about to get beat up by the way they were speaking to me, calling me an arseh*le and what not...

went to the cop shop about 30 minutes later, the old man came along for support, asking if the police had gone all "gestapo" now? Formal complaint was made and the constable called me the next day and found out who was on duty and asked me what i wanted done, an apology or what not.... i was grateful and thankful to him for taking the time to look into the issue, but i was just over it by that stage and had other stuff on my mind, had a thesis to write at the time for uni ... it was just such a shit experience that i never asked for it to begin with... i'm by no means anti-police, but i never had any interactions with them really, especially not in the nature the way they approached me at 1am... i had taken the last train home for years and never came across them like that before... constable said it was a combination of that and them being over zealous...

tbh, kind of feel apathetic about the police after my experience... would co-operate with them a bit more if i ended up in a similar situation in the future though

corrupt scum, every one of them

they're as bad as the criminals they claim to protect us from

Overweight mate of mine was pulled over for speeding on the way home from a night out..... Instead of going him a fine they made him do 20 push ups.... We were in the car in fits of laughter

I like how here when the cops pull you over, they don't automatically think you are up to no good or are a criminal. You can get out of your car and speak to them and it's all good.

A mate of my dad's was in America last year and he had hired a car to get around for the job he was there for and he got pulled over by the cops for what he found out later was a dead tail light.

He pulled over and he stopped the car and just got out so he could get to his licence in his back pocket. The cop lost his mind and pulled his gun and ordered him back in the car. And then he gave him a ten minute lecture about not getting out of the car until he was told to. All with his gun drawn.

My dad's mate almost had a heart attck over it. All for a busted tail light. Just crazy shit.

They deal with alot of crazy shit over there though.

Uni thesis hey ? How about some sentences ?

Yes, but when you have innocently made a "mistake" (I say "mistake" because how is getting out of your car really that bad) and they over react like that, it can really make an impression on you. The cop, after he had calmed down, didn't even want to listen to an explanation or even acknowledge he was from out of town and didn't know the "rules".

I know they have a dangerous job over there but some of them need a little lesson in risk assessment. A 50 year old guy reaching into the back pocket of his jeans for his wallet whilst saying "I've got my licence in my back pocket officer" (or at least trying to while he was being yelled at) doesn't seem like the greatest risk to me.

They have to treat each situation on its merits, not a one size fits all.
