Apologies if you're sick of seeing my same design on here but I have an idea of how to better incorporate aboriginal culture into our flag. Now I'm not aboriginal so I don't have any dot painting skills, the one you see is just a place-holder for what would be a more meaningful dot-painted design.

I'm in favour of keeping the flag as a-political as possible but I still think aboriginal culture has it's place on the flag, very unique as well.
Awesome

This design I've come up with is quite similar to a lot of other stuff in this thread and inspired by outer sources as well, taking more of an evolution approach rather than trying to introduce something completely foreign. The Union Jack is dropped in favour of a larger eight pointed federation star (taken from the Unity flag) with the extra point representing the first peoples of Australia. The triangle that runs through the star is loosely inspired by aboriginal flag and from a design point of view breaks up the space in a different way than just a panel like in magpienato's design and other's that I've seen. I think that this gives it a bit more of a contemporary feel that our young country should have, whilst still being a design that can stand the test of time. The southern Cross is also retained in a slightly bolder form that allows it to hold the space better. The biggest change though is the move to green and gold, this is important I feel as it removes any sort of british look from the flag and gives it something uniquely Australian. I quite like the look of these on the flag waver that magpienato posted the link to earlier.

This approach also allows for the states and territories to retain their existing designs (or perhaps update) as well as proudly flaunt their state colours.

I love the designs I must admit!

This is superb, I really enjoy the meaning behind the additional point on the star, the colours blend well (making it aesthetically pleasing) and it is something unique and recognisable (while maintaining simplicity) with the potential to become as iconic as the Canadian flag. Well done.

This is superb

yeh agree (as much as I don't want southern cross on any new flag, I guess I am in the minority).
should email this to the flag people who each year put out a new one. and to today tonight / ACA
I am seriously considering emailing my electorate's MP, House Speaker Tony Smith. I've gotten a couple emails from him before so if I can get into some contact with him, maybe get some other designs from this page if that's all right. I know this sounds like a long shot but Mr Smith has some good connections within the government especially with Mr Turnbull.

I have to admit, those are pretty bloody good! If there was a vote for a flag + state flags that don't include the Union Jack, these would be my choices. Great work!

With the appointment of a Minister for the Republic in the Albanese Government - it seems clear that over the next decade or so there will be a renewed debate on Australian Republicanism - it will likely go to referendum after Queen Elizabeth's reign ends.
If the Republican vote succeeded - which would be a real possibility (opinion polls are generally close with a large portion undecided) you'd imagine it would be followed by a referendum on Australia's flag similar to New Zealand's in 2015.
While New Zealand's referendum chose to retain the Union Jack flag - change may be more likely in Australia following a successful campaign to become a republic, whereas NZ was (and remains) a constitutional monarchy at the time of their flag ref.

What do people think is the likelihood of a change to Australia's flag in the coming years?
Do you think current elements in the colours and southern cross would be retained?

I think there are probably more pressing matters at the moment than changing a figure-head that does nothing really (the proposed version was a President selected by the Prime Minister, so not really anything interesting). Also we wouldn't be in the Commonwealth Games anymore, and we can't have that!

A country can become a republic, but remain part of the Commonwealth, and thus still participate. The games have the ability to remain part of the sporting landscape.

There will always be more pressing issues than republicanism - doesn't mean it won't be on the agenda.
