The Test XI seems pretty settled at the moment, as follows :

Hayden
Langer
Ponting
M.Waugh
S.Waugh
Martyn
Gilchrist
Warne
B.Lee
Gillespie
McGrath

Rarely has it been this settled, apart from perhaps after the 1989 Ahses tour when the top 6 batsmen were very set, and the bowling attack fairly settled too.

So what would the second XI be?

Would recent Test player Slater be in it, or would he be left out on the basis of being dropped from the NSW team?
What about Stuart Law who would have been in any second XI over the last 10-12 years?
Which bowlers would be picked, given that Australia's selectors seem to have decided on a best 4 who are way ahead of the others?

How does this sound? :
Hussey
Love
Lehmann
Katich
Bevan
Watson
Haddin/Seccombe/Clingeleffer
Bichel
Noffke
MacGill
Rofe

He'd be a better than Noffke I would of thought.

JubJub,

Matthew Innes in my opinion looks better than Nathan Bracken as a bowling option for the test matches, and they're both left-arm fast so I was only going to pick one of them. :)

Very good quote. Just have a look at the top 7 batting averages for the last 7 tests:

Hayden - 794 runs at 79.40
Langer - 787 at 87.44
Ponting - 428 at 53.50
M Waugh - 389 at 43.22
S Waugh - 376 at 47.00
Martyn - 457 at 76.16
Gilchrist - 387 at 47.25

pretty unbeliavble top order batting in recent times.

in regards to our second XI:

Hussey
Maher
Love
Katich
Lehmann
Watson
Clingeleffer
Bichel
Inness
MacGill
Rofe

even further, you could have our third XI, which would beat most test teams:

Blewett
Elliot
Hodge
Clarke
Bevan
Higgins
Haddin
Clark
Bracken
Saker
Williams

This is my team, mainly the same names, but a few suprise inclusions.

1. Matthew Elliot, VIC (coz he's from Kyabram)
2. Mike Hussey,WA
3. Jimmy Maher,QLD
4. Simon Katich,WA
5. Darren Lehmann (C.)
6. Ryan Campbell,WA (WK)
7. Shane Watson,TAS
8. Andy Bichel,QLD
9. Ashley Noffke,QLD
10. Stuart MacGill,NSW
11. Matthew Inness,VIC (coz he's from Broadford)

12th Man Michael Klinger,VIC

Shaun Clingeleffer, unlucky to miss out but I went for Campbell, because of his slightly better batting
