Well looks like that horses for coarses approach that they were talking about a while ago will ring true with khawaja likely being left out.

What gets me though is they sent him over early and restee him from the ODI series in NZ to get ready and now they wont pick him which will now mean it will be at least 6 weeks between his last hit out in a match as his last outing was an ODI on the 23rd of January.

If shaun marsh gets injured which if history tells us he will probably score a 100 then do his hamstring or something.

Where does that leave usman hard picking the bloke if he hasnt played a game in 6 weeks and that they obviously dont trust in those conditions.

I probably wouldn't have picked one at all, a batting all-rounder who can send down some relief overs might have been better.

Reasonable question but I imagine he's been getting specialist training in batting in spin conditions. That'd hopefully prove to be more effective than ODI's in NZ. But yes I would have liked him to play the tour game too though.

Was thinking that, not that I agree with the selection but it's the clear argument.

There are no other all rounders who can really bowl that pace. Henriques and Cartwright are cannon fodder. Cummins is almost the next best option or Faulkner although he lacks the pace.

While I'm not impressed with the pitch the Indians have given us, it was very generous of them to win the toss and bowl.

I really like the promotion of Smith to No.3, didn't really give it much thought but I think it could be really beneficial for this series. it means our top order goes left, left, right, left, right. Makes it a little more challenging for India's spinners and could upset their line a bit if we keep rotating the strike with singles which is so important against spinners.

Plus the swinging, seaming conditions won't be there as much as somewhere like England so he won't be exposed as early. He is our best bat, him coming in at 3, getting his eye in early in time to face the spinners and setting a strong platform for our middle-late order will be crucial. Better sending him out there when we are 20-1 rather than 20-2. He's shown how good he is at no.3 in the ODI's. Marsh has a good record at No.4 scoring a century against South Africa and he averages over 50 at no.5 so he does pretty well in the middle order.

It seems the top order is set - Warner, Renshaw, Smith, S.Marsh & Handscomb and the bowlers are all but confirmed - Starc, SOK, Hazlewood & Lyon.

The only question remains is who will dil No. 6 or 7? Don't really want Wade batting at no.6 but at the same time, neither do I want Maxwell, M.Marsh or Agar batting at 6. Shame there wasn't a gun batsman in form who could play spin and could bowl handy part timers (like a Moeen Ali)

Good effort to just lose the 5 wickets for 465, but by the sounds of it, the wicket is a great one to bat on and nothing like we'll get in the first test. The openers were the only disappointments really.

Yeah I would've liked it if we batted the day out and given Maxwell a decent hit and time in the middle to actually put some pressure on spots in the line-up. Looks like the first test lineup is all but confirmed. Interested to see how Lyon & SOK bowl on this pitch.

We will enter this series with only 11 players having played in India this year. Only two others (Starc and Khawaja) have test match experience in India. If we had two tour games in India one being a first class game could be beneficial but with one I'd rather just get match practice into as many players as possible.

Now the pitches for tour games have gone far beyond a joke tbh. No use pointing fingers either. Every country including Australia is doing it. This pitch is about as far from what we'll play on that the curator possibly could've come up with. If we want to stop home team dominance something has to be done. South Africa is a genuine outlier for Australia both home and away whilst other teams we ever beat away are just crap. In fairness to India though whilst I can't remember them winning a series here they almost always put in a reasonable fight.

Carl's predictions and thoughts:

-Renshaw is going to be a walking wicket against the Indian spinners, predicting ashwin to get him every innings.
-Shaun Marsh should play every game he's fit.. He's easily one of the top 6 bats in the country.
-How tf is Uzzie, pakistani and can't play spin lel.
-Maxwell should get a gig at 6.. Don't bring back Mitch Marsh ffs he's useless. Play Maxy, keep Bird in the bowling lineup. But for some reason it won't happen despite him being the 3rd best bowler Australia has.
-O'Keefe is going to bowl his 20 overs an innings for f all wickets and f all runs. Waste of a selection.
-Wade to cost us a few drops and missed stumpings as per usual.
-Need to get Dizzy Gillespie on the phone to starc, hazlenut and bird.. Tell them what he did in 2004. Bowl top of off, hope for some inconsistent bounce an play for the bowleds/lbws

Can't disagree with that but it's very disappointing this is becoming the norm. I remember around ten years ago popping in for the last session of WA vs South Africa. Doesn't happen anymore.
