You have to classify them in terms of location:

AFL can't be the biggest, because Rugby League has similar interest (as shown by GF Ratings)

Grand Prix isn't watched by everyone, a lot of people don't really care.

Australian popularity:

1. Melbourne Cup - "The race that stops a nation"
2. Australian Open - Number 1 sport in Australia for 2 weeks
3. The Grand Finals (AFL & Rugby League)
4. Grand Prix

As far as International popularity:

1. Grand Prix
2. Australian Open
3. Melbourne Cup

NO WAY could it be the AFL Grand Final, yeah it gets hyped to the ****house in Melbourne but in Sydney and Brisbane it would all be about the NRL Grand Final, whereas the Melbourne Cup is hyped all over the country, and we all get a day off for it, well here anyway, so it wins, then equal second would be the Aus Open and the Grand Prix, although im sure when we make it to the Davis Cup Final that rates very highly.

There is only on sporting event that stops the nation - THE MELBOURNE CUP......The reason being - all sporting people from all codes watch it/have a bet on it, whereas the Footy/Rugby/Tennis are usually only watched by their fans in particular.

If ya hadnt noticed the Bledislo Cup generates as much interest and larger crowds than the State of Origen, so I think it should have been in the pole. It gets sellout crowds at the MCG and Olympic stadium (Sydney) and at every other ground that the matches are played. Oh well.
