Re: Automatic starter in our best 22

Davey is da bomb. Would have played every game last season if not for injury.

I don't exactly understand what you're getting at though -- automatic selections that we drafted in 2006? If that's the case Davey is the only one who has this so far -- Knighta wants players to be at peak fitness before selection which is going to make it a little harder for new draftees to break into the side though I expect the fringe 3rd and greater year players (like Dyson) to get more of a shot.

Maybe you should be more specific as "automatic starters" would be our best 22 (lloyd, lucas, fletcher, mcveigh, watson, stanton....etc)

Sorry, that's what I meant. I reckon Davey would be in there anyway.

Agree on all except Welsh.
There is no way he should be an automatic starter.

Ahhh...another anti-Welshy poster.

You have joined a large club on this board who share you're views on the local lad.

But not me. He is an automatic starter without even thinking about it....

What's this automatic starts crap?

Apparently we're building a side where there will be high competition for places.

You can expect guys like Lloyd, Lucas and Fletcher to all pull their weight, that's why they'll get picked evey week.

But after that, nothing should be automatic at this point.

Come round 1, the best 22 should be picked, regardless of who they are and from there, it's a week-by-week proposition.

Welsh is part of that group. He's an A-U-T-O-M-A-T-I-C selection for rd1 if fit. Although the actual phrase 'automatic selection' would never be uttered by anyone connected to an AFL club,we all know every club has em.

Competition for places? Yer...Welsh is a senior player who has younger players trying to take his spot. But fortunatly for him,his form has been good enough in '07 to warrant a place in the side come rd 1.

And its not new at Essendon to have the coach declare that every spot is up for grabs...its what Sheedy told Hird the first time he spoke to him when arrived as a recruit. He's been doing it for 30 years. Pushing his players harder and making them fight for spots...except the last few years:eek:
