I'm always interested in what close games do to the psyche of the players.

We had two close games with Geelong and Dogs in which we were overrun - the next month of footy was horrendous.

Then we had a close game against Richmond and got over the line and the next thing you know we're smashing Carlton out of the park.

The way I see it the bumps, bruises, corkies, aches, pains and strains don't seem to hurt as much after a win as a loss. We needed to win this and did. Can't overstate the importance of Burger enough - in the two close games he's played an important role in steadying the ship. Great addition to the team.

The other thing this game does is stop us getting ahead of ourselves coming up against an underperforming Port side. Port played in the old suburban footy conditions and had a few injuries. They also got spanked by the bottom side in front of their home crowd for a match that was supposed to honour their great players and legends. The close game today means we won't take them lightly.

Three in a row. We were all pretty pumped after Carlton but you can't expect the form we had prior to that to turn around over night. The fact is we've remembered how to win with an opponent coming at us from behind.

****in brilliant!

Great game for tension and intensity, fairly typical of Swans games. Shocking game for skills and execution, particularly the first half.

I thought that for a fair portion of the game the Hawks looked like they were thinking far too much. Also trying fancy stuff when the basics were what was required. In the last when adrenaline took over we were much better, although we still made some shocking blues.

As others have said, Stratton was very very good. He reads the flight as well as anyone in the team. Makes you realise the value of recruiting a defender who has grown up playing the position.

The lift from the leaders in the last quarter was sensational, particularly Mitch, Burger and Hodge. Some of Burger's clearances in the last were mouth-watering.

While some aspects of the game left a lot to be desired, when you play the Swans I think you just be grateful for the 4 points and move on. Winning two close ones sure beats losing them and hopefully gives us some momentum for the month ahead.

That last two minutes of Cyril was great.

I accidentally smacked my daughter in the side of the head as i jumped up, arms waving, when peto took that mark. She cried. I comforted and celebrated.

Contact to the head - regardless of intent is an offense - so you will have to miss the next two Hathorn games (unless your name is Buddy Franklin then your out for the next month)

We need to throw lots of money at Sydney's ruck coach. They turned Darren Jolly into a decent player and now he's at Collingwood he's a spud again and they've turned that fat f*** Mumford into a 40+ hitout machine!

Thought Renouf did ok round the ground though.
As for Skipper he will always be the bloke who kicked the ball perfectly for Peterson to take his ripper in the goalsquare:thumbsu:

Oh and while I'm here, anyone care to comment on todays umpires.

Wow they were terrible.

Sat with a neutral fan and made a point of checking with him every time I thought we were harshly dealt with. Agreed with me every time.

So many frees they just refused to pay, and in some circumstances they would pay one to them straight after the one they didnt pay to us.:mad:

Yeah, but when did common sense rule at the MRP?
does any one else think that the afl needs to look at a 5 min sin bin for head high stuff instead off weeks off, because if you can knock out an ablett or judd your in the box seat for the win, then if you are a repeat affender you get a couple of weeks off like soccer. the tribunral is just like my misses,(never forgets when you put a foot wrong and doesnt understand that when things are shown in super slow motion, your brain isnt running at that speed). good win boys.:thumbsu:

Sydney play a very accountable brand of football and it was a great effort for the guys to win. Would have been a lot easier had we kicked straighter.

What I like about it is that was not our day and we found a way to win - four of the swans goals were lucky - and another was not a free kick - and we missed many straight forward shots at goal.

Earlier this season / late last season we would have lost this game - we didn't - we got the four points and now we try to get four more points against Port.

GO HAWKS !!

Did the same Mervyn. I sat with a Saints supporter, and he was astounded how many times we should have received frees, but play on was called, and then whistle goes, Swans free.

That 50 against Goo was a shocker too..

Forward line was again pathetic.

I cannot recall the last time I read anything positive from you - what are you, the resident doomsayer?

It was certainly a frustrating day. Flashes of good, interspersed with poor disposal, poor decision making, poor shooting for goal. The number of times that play had to be held up because there was no-one forward to kick to or just bombing long in hope to Rioli and Hooper concerns me - our forward personnel is so strong but fails to operate effectively.

It was a win and another four points and once again a step in the right direction - I still have concerns over Roughie and Birchell but overall players across the board have taken another step and with changa to come back only strengthens the side. Hopefully Buddy can escape the wrath of the tribunal (not holding breath) and that Brownie's injury is not too bad, but it is really disappointing and a huge loss as he is someone that is difficult to cover just for the sheer intensity and passion let alone anything else.

Does anyone agree that in such a tight and defensive flooding game as this, Dowler would have been a great 3rd tall target and taken the pressure off the other forwards aswell? I still think our forward line looks a little 2 dimensional without the gun 3rd tall. look at Sydney. they had Playfair, Goodes, O'Keefe and Jesse White all working well in the forward line. I feel we bombed so often to no avail, who knows what could have happened if we'd had Dowler in the mix domn forward? At least it would have provided more of a contest against all their easy marks (so frustrating)!

And I do not feel as though the camo uniforms helped us out either (albiet for a great cause). We seemed to blend in with the crowd and the grass to a degree, and were well hidden behind the Sydney flood it seemed for much of the game(hence the bombing straight to their backman. Lol I hope someone agrees. Go Hawks!

Mixed feelings. Sydney were probably the worst team to be playing after last weeks effort against the Blues, we were all dressed up and Sydney wouldn't let us go anywhere If we had played the Bulldogs or Geelong it would've been a different game. As another poster has mentioned, but for bad kicking early we would've been 5-6 goals up before Sydney did what they do best although I think the final margin flattered the Swans. They did get some lucky opportunistic goals and so so many lucky bounces (why is it that a ball can elude 3 hovering Hawks and go straight to an opposition player time and time again?)
