Avatar - rating M or PG13 ?

Was asuming I'd just go along with the Kids till I saw the "M" rating.
Than I googled 'why is avatar rated M and found it is PG 13 in sacramento.

From what I can read the content is no worse than half the cartoons they have on TV (the anime type anyway) Is it ultra realism which makes it scary ? even more so in 3d

Can anyone advise me whats going on. it could be moot because although one of my kids is grade 6, the other is grade 3

Re: Avatar - rating M or PG13 ?

It's just a bit of violence, but the 3D effects may scare younger children. The Grade sixer should be fine, but I reckon the grade 3 would probably find it a bit scary. Personally if I was you I'd go see it with someone in 3D, and then go with your kids in 2D.

Re: Avatar - rating M or PG13 ?

It'd be the battle scenes and the violence in general, which is by no means gratuitous. There is no sex, might be a few swear words.

If you go on IMDB there is usually a link to a site run by your 'Family First' style watchdogs who run down every possible thing that might be offensive in the movie (this will have spoilers though), from memory it would likely go to the extent of '1hour 23mins: One female Alien looks longingly at a male Alien in a romantic manner' etc etc

PG13 is the US equivalent of our M either way.

I'd say Avatar would be no more violent or inappropriate than the later Harry Potter films or the new Star Wars films if that can be a bit of a guide for you.

I enjoyed 'Avatar' but I thought this was pretty clever and sums up some of the storyline complaints.

Haha not bad. :thumbsu:

Re: Avatar - rating M or PG13 ?

An ok film. Very overhyped IMO.

I wasn't really blown away by the 3D. The ads before the movie seemed to be more spectacular. In fact, the 3D seemed to work more in the human scenes than the Pandora scenes, bar the odd occassion.

I wanted to enjoy it, I knew not to expect too much, yet wasn't really blown away by anything. Was kind of waiting for the film to finish in the end.

Probably worth seeing at the cinema, to see it in 3D, but not worth the $20 it cost to see it (even on a tight-arse Tuesday!). There goes the gift vouchers I got for Christmas in one hit. :p

Yeah I agree about the 3D in Avatar, it wasn't really all that spectacular. I remember seeing a few 3D movies back in the 80's when I was a kid, such as Jaws 3, and that was more spectacular with stuff really flying out at you from the screen. The Avatar 3D was much more subtle and just an overall effect rather than providing any gimmicky 'wow' type moments, although in some ways that was better as it didn't detract from the film.

As many others have said, the plot was pretty much 'Pocahontas by numbers' and very predictable but the special effects and stunning action scenes in Pandora definitely made it worth the price of admission.

The problem is when people hear about this moving being in 3D they automatically (me included) think that objects etc will come flying at you. The beauty of Avatar is that 3D used in the film makes you feel as if you are looking at the movie through someone elses eyes that is actually there.

Ye not really sure how to explain it.....

If you want to see things flying at u in 3D ud be watching horror movies like Final Destination/My Bloody Valentine etc, where crap will be flying at u non stop until it bores you.

The good thing about Avatar in 3D was that the 3D was noticable but subtle and wasnt overdone like they are in horror movies. I think for people seeing a 3D movie for the first time (or those who havent seen it in a long time) may expect more from it because they expect things to be flying at you, but if they did that I (and those who have seen horror movies in 3D) would have found it to be overdone for the sake of it and a stupid thing to do.

Imo the 3D doesnt add much for me but Avatar did well in utilising the use of 3D.

Well I went to Avatar last night. Too be honest I wasn’t expecting a great deal given the reaction on this board. Now I’ll just be up front in that I’m no movie critique and I don’t go to the movies to question my life or be challenged, I have enough of that IRL. So I went to this movie being entertained.
Firstly I thought the animation was great however if you really wanted to see what was going on in the background it didn’t really live up to the hype, the 3D seems to give characters and the environment extra depth and the scenes that involved the major characters were brilliant (especially the night scenes) but when you peered beyond what was at the front of the scene it just didn’t quite get there. I gather with further development of the technology the whole package will get better. As for the story line, sure it was predictable but in reality it’s a safe as houses story line to build the environment and the action sequences around, the last thing you would want is to go to a movie like that and then have to put up with some convoluted story line that fails to get people excited and lets face it the best movies of all time all have very very simple story lines…. Its what people want, movies that have difficult to follow story lines or try to be “thought provoking” end up being “cult classics” or used by film nerds to make us all feel bad for liking Indiana Jones.

1 thing that surprised me which hasn’t been mentioned. When Star Wars came out it was attacked at being racist because of Jar Jar binks and his tribe of people being compared to African Americans…well how in hell does a army of mainly whites (with the odd Latino) go up against a “native tribe” who are all clearly voiced by African Americans (and 1 American Indian) not get noticed? Surely this is the same thing considering even the clothing warm strongly resembled what you expect in an African Tribe. Don’t get me wrong I couldn’t care less and I thought the people attacking Star Wars were way off radar. But I’m still surprised someone hasn’t complained about it.

the vatican has complained. havent looked into it cause, well dont relly care.

The Vatican didn't complain per se, It wasn't a directive from the Pope. It was a Vatican newspaper that reviewed the movie and criticised it along the same grounds that many here have. Take away the gimmick of the 3D and it has a very weak story and flawed eco message.

As I said the naivi or whatever they are called are suppose to be africns IMO.

So let me get this straight, you think the naivi are supposed to be african but the characters voice's are african americans? Or are they the same people to you?

They have Cap, just not on BigFooty.

Strange as it may seem for a film that pits greedy, immoral humans against noble denizens of a faraway moon, "Avatar" is being criticized by a small but vocal group of people who allege it contains racist themes - the white hero once again saving the primitive natives.

It was a great spectacle, I've never seen anything like it. btw, does anyone else think the ending leaves the door open for a sequel?

well I think many Americans think Africa is a country rather than a continent

Visually, it is a masterpiece. The baton has once again moved forward from "Star Wars" to "Tron" to "Terminator 2" and now to "Avatar".

Aside from that it is pretty ordinary and obviously catered to the widest demographic. The script is particularly bad.

6/10
