Remember that young Standard Liege player who was linked to Man Utd and Arsenal in January?

Don't look if you're no good with injuries...

Judge for yourself if you think it was (completely) intentional or not, but the 2 have a bit of a history. The victim (Wasilewski) is quite a dirty player himself (some even say he had it coming) and 2 seasons ago iirc he planted his studs into Witsel's back.

Witsel was in tears afterwards and insisted he never meant to hurt him. Wasilewski is probably out for a year.

Seen the vid last night, I don't think he meant for that to happen but it I think there was intent to "hurt".

Pretty poor stuff, sort of thing that should result in a long ban (whether the injury happened or not).

No intent IMO. Thought he was gonna get the ball first and so he should. The victim (sif im spelling that) was just too quick for his own good. Not the worst you will see but the broken leg doesnt look nice after a bowl of cereal

Yeah but where do you draw the line? Of course he didn't mean to kick the guy's shin in two, but what he did was very irresponsible and to me it looks as if he consciously tries to hurt him.

I should've also mentioned several Standard players were very aggressive throughout the whole game and had turned the match into a fight.

So what. Unless it was Witsel himself running around the whole game making lunging tackles the aggressiveness of his teammates have nothing to do with him or how he should be treated in this case.

Irresponsible by both men really. Witsel didnt make a good challenge but the victim came flying in recklessly for a ball he was always gonna be second too. In the end he paid the price for that. I dont think Witsel should get anything more than what you get for the average red card

You can't really have no intent when you go in for a challenge like that.

Players do it all of the time, and it's pure stupidity. Why tackle like that? It doesn't improve your chances of winning the ball at all.

Oh and Embers, I'm fairly sure the other dude got to the ball first, hence the reason he's now got a broken leg.

No. It means that the atmosphere on the field was tense, which could partly explain Witsel's intention to hurt Wasilewski. It obviously doesn't make the foul more or less bad.

You're seriously blind. It was clearly Wasilewski's ball and he didn't do anything irresponsible.

I've seen that on three different sites now, and each one has a different opinion.

Some idiots believe the player who got to the ball first was irresponsible and was 'always going to be second to the ball' eventhough he got there first.. (yes that's right i'm talking about you Embers)

Personally I believe there was intent to hurt, you can clearly see he pretty much goes into semi-stomp mode when the victim gets to the ball. He needs a longer ban. Just because he didn't mean to snap the guys leg in half doesn't make it any better.

Also, Kompany, I seriously doubt he will be only out for a year. The guy is a 29 year old DM, their bread and butter is tough play and tackling, the guys career is pretty much over I would assume.

Well apparently he'll need screws to put his shin and calfbone back together. Not looking good indeed.

The Eduardo rule?

Suspensions based on injury severity/length?...

Any chance of this being applied here, or is that something only the FA are looking into?

**** if I did that I'd be asking for a red just to help clear my guilt. Awful awful tackle, should go for wesks, there was clear intention to harm there.

Honestly, I didn't see any intent there.

Slightly overstepped the ball. Missed the thing and what happened was unlucky (for both parties) and obviously unfortunate for the injured dude.

Don't think any priors come into effect here.

Accident, imo.

Was a bad tackle. Nothing more.

He shouldn't receive a retrospective ban.

He is apparently getting 3 months for now. The Belgian league are sending video of the incident to FIFA for a second opinion I guess.

He and teammate Steven Defour have received death threats and are under constant police control. Standard Liege have appealed against the decision already (10 matches) but at the same time they're apparently looking to sell him in January.

I'm sure if it was Rooney, your response will be different. :p
