is it just me? or do other people on this site have a stange feeling that this current batch of players is the best mix we have had in a long long time?

Do u guys notice the way mick and the boys have a subtle but obvious arrogance/confidence when speaking about our club this year? do u guys notice it when we play?

i really believe this year we on a very special journey... top 4 beckons but i have a feeling we have a strong say on what happens on the final saturday in september....

By the way im not getting excited by our form to date but rather by the expectations the boys and mick seem to have on our beloved football club..

Definetly best group of second and first year players we had in a long time, and all you have to do is watch them celebrate a goal together to see how close they have become and how much they enjoy each others success, i hope they all turn out to be great players and keep the enthusiasm they ahve for the team right now.

Good to see we have finally fixed our recruiting and we may actually be using the rookie list well at last Maxwell, Harry, Cox, Toovey all look good players all from the Rookie list.

Maybe not this year but definately a promissing future the only negetive thing is that Buckley may not get his premiership but at his careers twilight we look the most likely to get one hope he can hold out but unlikely afterall i have heard through a contact that he will announce his retirement on last thursdays footy show

Let's not get carried away. We do not have the quality required to win the premiership this year, unless we do a Bradbury...

Pendlebury and Thomas are easily the best two youngsters we've had since Didak and before that Buckley. I think they are even ahead of where Didak was at that stage in his career as in his 2nd year he was just playing as a cameo forward pocket, while Pendlebury and Thomas are (so far) consistant contributors to the team, not just bit parts, but they are constantly in our best players.

The old Collingwood spirit is back, notice how the players are playing for one another and tacking in groups of three or four, which I'm excited about. I thought 'The Lexus Centre' softened us up but we are starting to find that hard edge again. Sir Scott Burns has a good year or two in him, three at best, and Tarkyn Lockyer has improved every asset in his game by the length of Flemington Straight. Dale Thomas and Scott Pendlebury are the best kids we've ever drafted (in the same draft) and they are our engine room for 10 years. I don't think we can win the flag this year... in fact we won't, but we are finals material going on our current form.

Yeah I've noticed that too hard tackling, commitment to the ball and an array of 2nd efforts I think have a bunch of good kids coming through.

THE BABY MAGPIES!

FB - J Clement (c) - N Brown - N Maxwell

HB - R Shaw - H O'Brien - S Cox

C - T Lockyer - S Pendlebury - D Swan

HF - A Didak - T Cloke - B Dick

FF - S Rusling - C Dawes - L Davis

F - Fraser - H Shaw (vc) - Thomas

int - B Reid - A Toovey - D Nicholls - C Bryan - B Holland - R Lonie - C Egan - T Goldsack - Illes.

This is just whats already on our list, not including the draft picks of the next few years, possible trades ect.

Obviously not all of them will make it, but you can bet that majority have set the tone, and the ones on that list that wont make it, well the new picks that will emerge, the possible trades ect. will take their spots.

What are your thoughts?

i rekon Iles will feature in the pies team

I've not seen anything of Willi this year. Are Reid and Brown getting a kick? Presumably Reid has been doing something right to have been placed on standby for the ANZAC match(?)

Yep agree with all of this CT. This isn't our year for the cup but hopefully we can finish at least in the bottom half of the 8 to get some finals experience into the youngsters so we can make a real tilt at the flag in 2-3 years time.

And bugger this Baby Pies stuff. Reminds me too much the Baby Bombers and I really don't want to associated in anyway with the red and black. My suggestion would have to be the Party Pies:p in that they are in fact "baby pies".:D

Or maybe "pre-pubescent Pies"?:D

Any other suggestions (and I'm sure someone can come up with something better) for a tag for the current crop?

Are you drawing similarities between the Baby Bombers of 1993 and our current list? That's probably not a bad comparison. I hope 2007 is our '1993' in that case.

Without knowing the stats it would be interesting to see what the attrition rate of kids drafted play 50 or more games. I would assume maybe 30%......Given that we have been able to activate rookie listed players and our drafting has been better the past couple of seasons (or so it seems to this point).....are we now at the stage where we can seriously look at bringing in veteran outside talent via trade without mortgaging the future?

What I mean is if we are able to blood some more kids before the end of the season and they look the goods.....can we trade a first round pick next year for a player such as Dal Santo?

i wouldnt class dal santo as a "veteran outside talent"

he would have 1 good 7-8 seasons left in him, and we would be crazy to pass it up unless we have our eyes on someone who we're sure is going to be a gun.

The problem with players of the ilk of dal santo or judd is that their trade value would be too high. i doubt the saints will take just a 1st round pick. they would probably want 1st round + a decent young player... For jud they would want a good 3 first round pics or equivalent players, which just aint worth it IMO.

If its just the matter of losing a draft pick i'd say maybe..
