Cats keep Batchelor

Geelong has retained rookie Nick Batchelor on its list, but it has elected to elevate him to 'promoted rookie' status, which will make him available for senior selection regardless of other senior-listed players being injured or delisted during 2006.

His status has come about as Geelong will have just one veteran - Peter Riccardi - on its list for 2006, as Brenton Sanderson, also a veteran listed player in 2005, has now retired.

Batchelor, 19, played the majority of the season with Geelong's VFL side, but he missed a handful of matches late in the season, due to a hamstring injury.

But the midfielder from Norwood, who was selected No.29 in last December's NAB AFL Rookie Draft, impressed the club this year and has been rewarded with a second season at Geelong.

Batchelor was also a member of South Australia's NAB AFL under 18 championships campaign in 2004.

Tim Sherringham has also been given a second season on Geelong's rookie list for 2006, but Jarrod Garth and Luke Buckland have not been retained.

Thats abit ********. I didn't see much of him but from what I have been told he is to soft. Oh well the club obviously see's something in him. Not surprised Garth is gone

He was 68kgs wringing wet when he arrived at the club for ******** sake.
He's an outside midfielder but certainly not soft.

I'm happy with the decision to make him our nominated rookie although it's a bit puzzling that they'd make the decision before the new rookies arrive in December.

Big surprise, club must rate him. How will that effect our draft picks. Might mean we take one less.

He's not on the senior list, is simply our nominated rookie.

He will remain on the rookie list, but unlike the other rookies he can play senior football without having to rely on a long-term injury.

I'm a fan of Nick Batchelor's and was wrapt that he slipped through to us to be rookied.
As i stated in my player ratings at the start of the season he was the rookie most likely to be promoted.

Very pleased to see the club recognise his potential as well.

For a bloke of such petite proportions, he certainly does instil a bit of vigour on the field.

Feisty young customer, with a penetrating kick and desire to win the contest. May not make senior selection next season, but at least he’s in the mix to.

Cant see what the fuss about him is. Didnt like what I saw of him at all this year. Not very committed to the hard ball, nor is his kicking anything flash. Thats why he was taken late in the rookie draft, and why he probably wont play an AFL game. Wouldve been a better decision to promote Buckland imo.

Like nanana i concur that batchelor shirks the contest and his supposed foot skills r not apparent. Not sure y they bothered to make him the elevated rookie.

Just wondering where Jarrod Garth went wrong. I saw him play a lot in Tassie before he went to Geelong and he always showed a lot of potential. I didnt see him play this year but his name seemed to pop up in the best players and goalkickers a bit.

Ridiculous. As A Norwood supporter, I saw quite a bit of him play before he got drafted, and he is a very good player. Plus, he had a good season in the VFL.

Garth suffered from being a 'tweener' (in-between height), too short for genuine KPP, too tall/slow for flanker.

Plus he was behind Kingsley, Lonergan, Haynes to name three.

Garthy was probably a bit stiff comming from a premiership winning team in Tassie to the struggling Geelong VFL side. A full forward in a bad team doesn't really have much of a chance to shine.

Kicked a goal a game but probably needed to kick aroung the 40 mark to be kept on for another year (remembering he kicked close to 100 goals for Clarence & the Mariners the year before).

Saw him play against eventual premiers Sandy in a VFL praccy match and he kicked about 6.7 and just kept plucking the pill out of the air. Mind you, we won that game by about 10 goals and struggled from there on in. Still I remember driving home thinking the maybe we had unearthed something special but alas it wasn't to be.

Good luck to him, wherever he ends up.

Yeh i agree, from what i heard he didnt have too bad of a year. I though he was at least in line to be retained. has great hands but maybe his inaccurate kicking cost him! good luck to him
