- Does It matter anymore???
He is lauded because he the leader or among the top 3 for 1%s in the club. Not everyone can be flashy like Didak and Davis. O'Bree tackles, shepherds, win clearances and when Brad Scott left the club, he became 'an interim' midfield coach last season. He is also very consistent and has had several consecutive top 10 Copeland finishes.
That a plodder can rate so highly is an indictment on the list malthouse has put together.
The fact that we have persisted with a plodder with no pace, poor disposal and lack of kicking depth and his only string to his bow is that he can do 1%ers is a further indictment on Malthouse not aggressively pursuing or developing elite mids earlier than this. His clearances have for great periods of time been directly to the opposition, so he has cost us as much as you think he has benefitted us.
You can easily be persistant when the level you set is well below those that are elite.
you cant question his work ethic, but you certainly can question his place when you compare him to most other mids who have played the number of games he has. He wouldnt get a gig in too many other teams, not now, not even at his peak, which I am trying to remember when this was!
The fact that we have now recruited a similarly paced mid in Ball, with no depth to his kicking, who was only ranked 14th on St Kilda's list by Lyon which was the reason ball he got his nose out of joint and the fact that he is massively injury prone and as was told to me by a St Kilda insider, that he is a 25yo in a 50yo's body, doesnt exactly inspire me. But the jury is out on him, he performed well in the GF for less than half game time and in fact could have been the catalyst to win the game in that gruelling last qtr, he may well yet prove his worth.
