Ball taking over from O'Bree

He is lauded because he the leader or among the top 3 for 1%s in the club. Not everyone can be flashy like Didak and Davis. O'Bree tackles, shepherds, win clearances and when Brad Scott left the club, he became 'an interim' midfield coach last season. He is also very consistent and has had several consecutive top 10 Copeland finishes.

That a plodder can rate so highly is an indictment on the list malthouse has put together.

The fact that we have persisted with a plodder with no pace, poor disposal and lack of kicking depth and his only string to his bow is that he can do 1%ers is a further indictment on Malthouse not aggressively pursuing or developing elite mids earlier than this. His clearances have for great periods of time been directly to the opposition, so he has cost us as much as you think he has benefitted us.

You can easily be persistant when the level you set is well below those that are elite.

you cant question his work ethic, but you certainly can question his place when you compare him to most other mids who have played the number of games he has. He wouldnt get a gig in too many other teams, not now, not even at his peak, which I am trying to remember when this was!

The fact that we have now recruited a similarly paced mid in Ball, with no depth to his kicking, who was only ranked 14th on St Kilda's list by Lyon which was the reason ball he got his nose out of joint and the fact that he is massively injury prone and as was told to me by a St Kilda insider, that he is a 25yo in a 50yo's body, doesnt exactly inspire me. But the jury is out on him, he performed well in the GF for less than half game time and in fact could have been the catalyst to win the game in that gruelling last qtr, he may well yet prove his worth.

and you are an indictment on this board and worst our supporter base.

Remove your head from your ass, or stop watching football if it hurts that badly

At the end of his career he will walk into an assistant coach's role. Having his nous within the playing group is an enormous advantage in regards to the development of our players. He obviously has his limitations, but in terms of positioning he is second to none and plays an important role within the team. with the possible exception of Geelong and Footscray, he'd make any other midfield in the league.

ah yes, the sycophants return. Your eagerness to praise everything Collingwood and not cast any critical eye over anything that happens onfield is the reason not enough pressure is brought to bear on the club from the rah rah rah crowd for being better than we are.

Better be careful that Eddie doesnt hear you loud enough praise every move or he might criticise you.

malthouse will never take this team beyond where it is, O'bree is sympotmatic of why the team wont advance beyond the huge chasm that exists between us and the top 2. He is a plodder where the better teams than us have genuine midfield stars, and a little pace and/or skill too I might add.

Pace is so F-ing overrated, O'Bree is a key player and the inclusion of Ball will only help him, he will have another solid year in 2010.

Agree.

Cats: Corey, Ling, Bartel, Selwood. None are quick. Ablett yes.
St.Kilda: Hayes, Dal Santo, Goddard. None are quick. Montagna average. Jones quick.
Hawks: Mitchell, Sewell, Lewis, Hodge.None are quick. Burgoyne yes.
Dogs: have a quick midfield

If you can find the footy and dispose of it with decent to good efficiency, you'll do just fine.

If collingwood have obree and ball as centre and ruck rover. Pendles as rover daisy and davis on the wing with Fraser and didak half forward flank I would assume we would win most clearences. O bree and ball will dish out the ball to pendles of if not hold the ball for another bounce. Pendles to Thomas and Davis fly by with a nice hand ball to didak and Fraser who are fine finishes.... Looks good on paper...

Too bad O'Bree cannot dispose of it with even mediocre efficency, he is a shocker for finding the opposition by foot.

I largely agree with this, MM allows to many work horses with poor kicking or decision making in the 22 and an un-pressured place at that, only the younger players fear being dropped after a quiet game.
