Bancroft overlooked

The first difference is they actually score runs.

Second difference is they have techniques which demonstrate they are more likely to succeed. Batting properly is the first indicator that a player can do well.

It is not just a convenient excuse. This “all batsmen have flaws” stuff is a cop out. Again, some flaws are worse than others. Some batsmen have the mental application to overcome their deficiencies. To the extent Smith and Labuschagne have flaws, they are far less prominent. Mitch Marsh also has a better technique than Bancroft.

As a thought experiment, why was Phillip Hughes, who was far more prolific than Bancroft at shield level, not also a success at test level?
Phillip Hughes sadly had some massive technical flaws (back foot went to leg, not off) - should have got a pair on test debut - refused to change for awhile after he got initially dropped - then the second time started to work on it - sadly we will never know what might have been

what did Green show at test level? I like him and reckon he seems like a great kid but as a batsman at test level he really struggled most of the time. Nervous and struggled to get going.
Doesn’t move his feet early - must be a good bloke but FFS if he was the best all rounder he’d be in the team, but he’s not he’s the 2nd best, so instead we burn 3 openers so we can fit him in. This is a very arrogant selection, mired in groupthink. Hope the Windies knock a few in early. Our total show needs a huge pull thru.

  • Stiff on Bancroft due to his Shield form so he can now join the Stuart Law club etc
  • He also shouldn't have thrown the bowlers publicly under the bus
  • Bancroft being 31 doesn't help, I can see why the selectors would want to give more time to youth like Green as he is the future as Marnus was the youngest in the last test and this would be an easy series to ease into new positions
  • Good marketing as no one was going to watch the WI tests but some will now to see how Smith goes opening the batting
Bancroft isn't half the player Stuart Law was lmao

Unfortunately you can’t win every option has issues. They have taken the Hail
Mary and I don’t mind it

Is marsh really an allrounder? he bowled 7 overs a test this last series thats a handy part timer.

While Smith has never opened, he has had 29 innings at number 3.

Despite a career average of 58.01, he averages 67.08 in this position. This is his batting position with his highest average.

Interestingly, if you break that down into times when he comes in when the FOW is in the first 10 or less runs, he averages 77.56 (across 9 innings). Greater than 10 is 61.53 (20 innings, 3 not-outs). I would like to note that 10 is a relatively arbritary number and you can adjust the threshold to swing averages. It simply worth treating as indicative of high performance.

So historically, Smith has excelled when he has needed to practically open the batting.

That's not to say that he'll be scoring at this rate, particularly since he averages about 42 over the past year, but it's pretty compelling data to support giving it an opportunity.

In addition, Green averages 7.35 more than Bancroft (reducing the need for Smith to be as prolific), is yet to hit his peak, is young, offers bowling, and may get an opportunity to play his natural position at 4 (rather than out of position at 6).

I love Bangers, but I just can't see how he can remotely compete with the above.

There's flaws and then there are flaws you know won't succeed at test level. Every batsman has a flaw here and there, but if a batsman falls in the latter it's hard to be successful. Is Bancroft in that group, the selectors seem to think so and they generally get this right.
People said the same thing about Matthew Hayden and VVS Laxman; you can't play like that and hope to be successful at international level; you can't play like that and have any hope of succeeding in Australia. I can remember someone in the broad cast saying early in Laxman's innings in Perth - the one that started it all - that the extent to which you cannot play that way in Australia made him afraid for Laxman's safety, flicking across the line on a bouncy track like that.

Khawaja was on the outer under a different regime, then he was brought in and excelled. There's many ways to skin a cat, and there's quite a few years of Bancroft's career left before we consign him to the dustbin.

It’s a poor reflection on our domestic cricket

It's not really. It's a poor reflection on the egos currently in the test team.

How's Labs form going? smith? Warner before retired?

They should worry about their own form first but I guess the second best option is to put down any challenges as frequently as possible. That'll help em out.

Labuschagne and Smith are hardly disgracing themselves and aren’t in real danger.

Smith in particular, his second innings in Melbourne was painful but critical to the victory.

Langer and Moody spitting chips that Bancrocft was left out. Well guys you are both West Aussies and the bloke that comes in for Banners is also a West Aussie. Green also happens be a classier bat, is younger with a view by selectors of long term occupancy in the Baggy Green.

CA may have made a heavy rod for its back with the Bancroft non selection as it risks sending the wrong message to players in the domestic first-class system. Another West Aussie, Kim Hughes believes this to be the case. I have to agree.

Langer never hid his preference for his boys. His obvious cheerleading and bias toward WA players should have been sniffed out before he became coach. It should possibly even have disqualified him when he was IT20 coach.

Smith's reflexes have clearly slowed. Out lbw alot more than he used to. This was brutally exposed by the pace of Mark Wood in England.
Was he? That's not my recollection at all, I thought he looked just about the most solid against him, particularly the early tests. Others looked hurried and scrambled and he looked more or less the same as always. A quick look at the scorecard also shows Wood only got him twice, and they were in the same test, so nothing in the other 4.

Curiously, there seems to be a theme of Smith getting out to the same bowlers in both innings with Tongue and Woakes also doing it in the series. 3 out of 5 tests the same bowler got him both innings.

Can someone show me Cam Greens matches and scores since he was dropped? Or just the last two seasons of shield cricket?

I find it impossible to find it online

Says it all we all know why Renshaw was ousted when Langer was coach. Glad we got rid of the bloke from being coach.

Langer banished Renshaw to the bin from the get go to get Harris, Finch, Bancroft in the side during his tenure.

What a complete waste that was. Out of all those that played test Cricket Renshaw was the only one that looked like a test player.

5 years on we don't know anymore because he has been screwed around mentally by 2 regimes.

Langer never picked Renshaw once during his time as coach.

Made 96 in his only Shield game this year. Was a class above every bat there

There should be a link to recent matches on his cricinfo profile.

You should also be able to find a home page for each of the last two shield seasons in cricinfo, and you can scroll through the scorecards.

No one whinges more than past WA blokes. First we had Mitch whinging on Langer being booted, not a peep since we've won every series since bar India in India. Now we have the uproar on leading out a sub 40's average opener. Lets not pretend the bloke is like Jamie Cox or something
