Barcelona, which added World Cup top scorer David Villa this offseason, is negotiating a 150 million- euro ($188.6 million) bank loan after falling behind with salary payments to players. The soccer club denied it’s bankrupt.
The 2009 European champion hopes to secure the loan in a few days, Barcelona President Sandro Rosell said, according to the team Web site. Rosell, who replaced Joan Laporta last week, didn’t identify the banks the club is negotiating with or name players affected by the wage delay.
We have to finance” our short-term obligations such as wages, Rosell said, adding the team also plans to trade defender Dmytro Chygrynskiy back to Shakhtar Donetsk for 15 million euros, 10 million less than it paid for him in August 2009. Club members “can relax,” Rosell added. “The club isn’t bankrupt.”
Last week, Barcelona said it became the world’s biggest sports team by sales, overtaking Real Madrid. Revenue rose 16 percent to 445.5 million euros for the year through June 30 following its 2009 Champions League title. Net income was 9 million euros.
Spanish soccer clubs are under pressure from spiraling payroll costs, two years of recession and a credit crunch, according to a study last month by Barcelona University professor Jose Maria Gay. On June 16, Mediaproduccion SL, owner of the broadcast rights for the domestic league, said it sought bankruptcy protection.
TV Deal
Barcelona’s seven-year, 1 billion-euro contract with Mediapro through 2013 isn’t secured by a bank guarantee, unlike Real Madrid’s accord, Rosell said. While Barcelona has had assurances from Mediapro, concern over the contract remains, Rosell said, according to the website.
The team’s costs soared the last year as it paid out 40 million euros in bonuses to players and coaches after winning several trophies, the team said last week.
Barcelona, which is owned by its members, acquired Villa from Valencia for 40 million euros in May. He has scored five World Cup goals in five games.
Rosell played down speculation that the club is poised to sign Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas, even though he said “everyone knows he wants to come here.”
He “denied adamantly” that there was any possibility of Barcelona paying 50 to 60 million euros for the midfielder. Publicity about the possible deal was “the worst thing that could have happened,” he said.

Such a shame, not sure who Godzke will support now as barca do not meet his strict financial discipline criteria.

aww what a shame. :D

this is why you'll always be in Real Madrid's shadow.

Barcelona fails to pay players wages for June

However, Rosell has moved to reassure worried fans that Barca's problems are under control and that the process of securing a loan had already started under the previous board.

"The banks know that we have a business plan that will allow them to recover the money. The club is not bankrupt because it generates income," he added.

"The members shouldn't be afraid because it is under control. We must resolve this tension.

"It can be done in two ways: to have extra income, like selling Chygrynskiy, and/or taking a loan, which is what we have done.

"The previous board had already begun this process. We followed the same path - the same banks, the same target but with a different business plan. They [Laporta's board] also knew they needed this credit."

While I dont wish any football clubs to go broke, but this can only be good for the sport if Barca goes broke. It will make FIFA and UEFA sit up and take notice and finally do something about putting into place some financial rules about players wages and transfer fees.

The cause of the problem be pinned on the stupid amounts of money football clubs pay out in players wages and player transfer fees and agents fees.

Yaya Toure is apparently on 200kGBP/week while Ronaldo is reportedly on about 250kGBP/week rising to about 500k with endorsements. This is stupid money to be paying some idiot to kick a ball around a rectangular pitch and while the club takes in a large amount in TV licencing through their respective leagues and gate takings and advertising and merchandising it is barely enough to cover their player costs.

In the end, the whole house of cards will collapse and there will be a lot of bankrupt football clubs out there at the highest level. Then what are they going to do?

Meh, this is all just Rossell trying to paint Laporta as an irresponsibe idiot and himself as the Voice of Financial Reason. As ever with Barcelona, it's all just propaganda.

Of course it's that. Laporta started off in the exact same manner - he even had a documentary made on his first year as president. Looked all nice and all, but was in fact all propaganda for his project. Funnily enough, Rosell was Laporta's best man at the time, and he featured heavily in the doco as well.

I hate politics altogether. Happy to stick to what happens on the field.

As I said at the end of the season, Cesc won't be leaving. Turns out I was right when I said Arsenal would ask too much, apparently ask for 1 million would be a strech.

Serves them right, the ****ing tapping up bunch of disgusting *****. Hope they have to sell of their players.

Don't celebrate too quickly, sunshine. Like I said, when Laporta took over, he too said the club's finances were in shambles. The next thing he did then was outbid Man Utd for Ronaldinho.

Have you seen your revenue and then looked at your profit figures, it's scary.

Care to elaborate on "between the lines".

BB did it for me. Also, there are whispers that Rossell wants a shirt sponsor for shitloads of cashola, what better way to sell that to the members than to tell them we are well and truly ****ed financially?

You have to use your brain rdub, not everything is always black and white.

We'll see. :D

.

Thats a good plan by Barca's standards. Meaning its completely stupid and makes no business sense

That's not what he said. You have to remember that being Barcelona club president isn't like being Sheik Mooralbark or whatever his name is. You have to convince the voting block that you're the bloke who can raise funds. So what you do is - and as Kompany says, this is a tried and true technique - you've done your homework pre-election and know the backing is in place, so when you take control you tell everyone that the previous guy left everything in a big mess, then when it comes in you can say "see, only I could have done this, vote for me next time!". It's all a big game of smoke and mirrors.

So yeah, Barcelona always go on about how they don't have a shirt sponsor because they're so pure and anti-commercial (no really, stop laughing at the back there), so Rossell's had his tame journalists cook up a financial scare so the traditional resistance to not having a shirt sponsor can be undermined. It's not about selling it to a sponsor (that's the easy part, it's presumably done already), it's about selling it to the membership.

I've seen it all before. I hate Barcelona but you underestimate their sliminess and dishonesty at your peril.

you have to actually lose to be a sore loser?

;)

inb4typicalarrogantbarcareply.

suck it up kids.

your jealously is unbelievable.

I dont have anything against Barca, a fantastic club and imo much preferred over Real. But.....my memory may have been affected by all the late nights during the World Cup....but did Barca win the Champions League?? So if I am right, and they didnt, they did in fact lose?

Now I dont know if they were sore loser, but you may need to change your arguement here??

you fail at sarcasm.

They were such gracious losers that they helpfully turned on the sprinklers at the Nou Camp to help the victorious Internazionale team cool off after their exertions. Not many clubs would have been so generous.

Ah yes, now I recall.....well, the poor old curator was probably on a schedule and needed to get home for some Cerveza's!!

Mate, if i was being sarcastic it would have been much more scathing and would have included this for  for those not so attunded to sarcasm.

I dont have any issue with Barca, and actually find the sprinkler thing quite amusing.

I was just pointing out that your comment of 'you have to actually lose to be a sore loser' was factually incorrect if being directed at Barca last season.

Untwist those knickers my friend :p
