Jimmy Bartel in hospital with appendicitis

Michael Auciello

BREAKING NEWS: Geelong star Jimmy Bartel is likely to miss Sunday's top-of-the-table clash against Port Adelaide after being taken to hospital with possible appendicitis.

One of the Brownlow medal favourites, Bartel was taken to hospital late last night after complaining of pain in that area yesterday.

The Geelong Football Club is waiting on confirmation of the condition and will release a statement later in the day.

Defender Josh Hunt missed two games late in 2005 because of appendicitis. He had surgery on the Sunday of round 21, missed the last home and away game of the season, but returned to play Melbourne in the elimination final.

Anyone know how long he may be out??

Lordy, lordy, glad the finals aren't for a couple of weeks. Jimmy'd be devastated if he missed them. Not to mention us fans.

GET WELL SOON JIMMY!!

Wont get estimate until they examine him and then more definate after surgery ... if it is appendicitis. I tore a muscle in my abdomen playing footy and the pain was shooting and acute so they originally thought it was appendicitis.

Could be 2 weeks like hunt or if it is more inflamed/pops or the surgery goes bad could be longer. Then with surgery there is the chance of infection as well.

Yep, get well soon Jimmy! At least it isn't a major thing, 2-3 weeks isn't too bad.

Who to bring in ???

Danyle Pearce for us had an appendicectomy earlier this season and was back after two weeks with no apparent ill effects. So if Bartel's condition requires surgery and is uncomplicated he'd be ready for the first week of the finals.

Is this a blessing in disguise? 2 week rest maybe good although of course we dont want his health to be in jeapordy.

Im really excited about the finals ay. IM in the US at the moment but im back in time for the last round!

How reliable is this Auciello fella? It is the Addy after all. Anyone phoned the hospital/club?

I would say that the Addy has phoned the club, hence the "will release statement" bit...they dont release statements for no reason.

I wonder if they wouldve rested Selwood if they knew about this?

You would think they would have, but remember when they ran that story about Ablett breaking his arm???

Just noticed the "confirmation" bit. Pays to read the whole lot :\

I would think that its true that he is or has been into hospital, but as to what it is for is not exactly known as yet byt the Addy, hence the "possible" bit

Yeah, I realise that now, hence the straw clutching.

Wonder what his Brownlow odds are now? Bit like the stock market last week probably.

that sucks for Jimmys Brownlow chances as well. I hope if he requires surgery he will only be out a couple of weeks. They can do this op via keyhole surgery if it isn't too bad so you recover much quicker. But as Asty said all depends on how bad it is. Will wait for an official word frm the club.

He can't - not named as an emergency.

If it's true - someone will be added to the squad. Earlier in the season Scott West was added to the Bullies emergencies on a Friday - and played.

Fair play. I think it would look pretty silly of the cats to name him considering his "general soreness" and Thompson saying that he won't rest players...

He didn't play, but your right the Emergency list was changed that night and West was added.

Danyl Pearce from PA had his appendix removed this year and missed one week. It all depends on if it has burst or not and Jimmy's own reaction to the surgery. Surgery effects people differently and some recover quicker than others so it is very difficult to use your own or others experiences to try and gauge how quickly he may recover.

Pearce had surgery right after the round 13 game with brisbane (which he played in), giving him 12 or so days to recover. Luckily only missing one week.

With bartel it's right before a game, so if he is having the surgery now, he'll miss at least 2 weeks - unless he heals superquick.
