Club History Before the Crows, there was the Redlegs

Correct Ford, the Maggies did finish 4th at the end of the minor round, but with 11 wins and 10 losses for the season we weren't much better than the deadlegs, who finished on 10 and 11.
The Maggies total points scored for was only about 100 more than the points against for the entire season, so I still maintain that we limped into the finals. ;)

The eventual premier Glenelg had only lost 1 minor round game, and the 2nd and 3rd teams, Sturt and North, only about 4 or 5, so even if we got past the deadlegs we weren't going to go deep in that finals series.

I couldn't agree more that it was farcical to have to play a team that finished lower, on its home ground in an elimination final though.

Oh yeah I wasn't disagreeing about limping in, just how fortunate Norwood were to get in.

As a young Port supporter at a northern suburbs school I was harshly reminded of every ugly defeat to Centrals. ;)

Personally I can't wait for Gremio to create a thread "wow the inaugural crows team was full of glenelgs, what's the deal there?"

:D Deep breath ...

And why was Graham Cornes appointed coach when in his own words had a fitter, better team than Ports and still lost the granny because um John Cahill could coach betterer than him?

Reason: Gernelg x souf astraya x sanfl = shitness personified.

This is a historical perspective but basically Norwood represent the privileged of society, the doctors and lawyers of Adelaide. They are based in Adelaide's leafy eastern suburbs where the socio-economic ranking is high and all the attendant benefits of society accrue. Their children all go to college and build their advantage by knowing other members of society's elite.

Port Adelaide on the other hand is the working class embodiment, the blue singlet wearing navvies and the labourers of the docksides who fight and scrap for any advantage.

As you can imagine, these are very basic generalisations and now many children of the Port attend private schools and there are areas of some relative advantage while the Norwood zone has public schools and many troglodytes living in its foothills.[/QUOTE]

Noted your last para Ford re generalisations :thumbsu:

Interesting thread guys. hope you don't mind if i post on this? Not gonna get into the historicity, it's all been said. One thing that irks me is this working class myth some new Port supporters have and some older ones push, over Norwood. The demographics of the area and supporters has changed many times over the decades. I grew up in the Kensy, Tranmere area most of my life. Norwood and most of the surrounding suburbs were, from around the 50s to the late 80s true working class migrant suburbs. I'm not talking about the Burnsides or Toorak Gardens here but Norwood proper, Maylands, Trinity Gardens, St Morris/Firle, Magill, Tranmere etc. WW2 housing, Housing trust and a large population of Italian and Greek working class families, most;y labourers, GMH and Chrysler workers. The trendies migrated into those 'burbs circa late 80s early 90s. plus norwood had a large supporter base in the north eastern area like Hope Valley, Holden hill, Windsor Gardens and for some reason (i know quite a few) from the southern suburbs like Morphett vale and Woodcroft etc hardly chardy drinkers (unless it was out of a box).

I have a few mates, die hard Leggies supporters that are Power supporters (does my head in lol) and one of my cousins wives who comes from a die hard Port family, old man gives thousands to the club every year and who hail from Rostrevor. Can't stand the mole, not cause she's a port supporter just a shit person, One day was over watching footy at there place, when they were living at St Georges no less and she looks at me after Port wins and says "We are PA!" Had to laugh and said when was the last time you had a beer at the Alberton hotel? You wouldn't set foot in that place. You Grew up in a two story wog palace in Rostrevor and went to Mary Molekillup"

At least I was spared that horror.

My teacher at the time Mr McKenzie was the only other Port supporter at the school.

Recess and lunch in the classroom for both of us.

Like a scene from Walking Dead. :D

**** it was awful.

The last year of that terrible premiership drought. Sturt coming off Port like premiership numbers over the previous decade. "We'll get em kid, we'll win next year" my year 4 teacher got me through that hell.

Good post and very accurate re demographics. You missed one 'working class' 'burb and that's Kent Town. Oh and Beulah Park. Much of the housing in Norwood were dumps and attracted tenants accordingly. Parts of Dulwich weren't much better. And having lived and worked for many years in the eastern suburbs from 1958, I always enjoy a smile when the eastern suburbs are generalised as 'green leafy' etc.

Norwood High was on Beulah Rd Beulah Park until moving 'upstairs' in 1961. Only two of us identified ourselves as Port supporters:D

PE teacher by chance?

No. Alan McKenzie was his name. He was my class teacher and back then your class teacher took you for sport. He was cool. Boys play football girls play netball and Americans play basketball. He just didn't get soccer at all.

Yeah, it was Norwood tech then. We lived just a minute away before we moved to Tranmere, next door to the Mccallum family.

That's what I remember of the Norwood area and its supporters growing up as a kid in the mid to late 70's and as a young adult of the early to mid 80's. I had uncles and aunts and my folks cousins, family friends who grew up in that area and are Norwood supporters. My dad was a truck driver and he would take me on deliveries on school holidays to some of these suburbs. I grew up in Hope Valley, first primary school was in Windsor Gardens so I know exactly what you are saying. Its why I have never had a hatred of Norwood supporters like some. Bloody hate losing to them but respect them. The many supporters I came across were as tough and hard, not any chardonnay set.

I'm going to the pub to make my weekly donation to the TAB.

Even thinking about 76, despite the truckload of flags that followed, still brings me down.

I grew up in the Adelaide Hills and hated Sturt with a passion. A few of my Port supporting mates and I got hold of a Sturt flag and burnt the bastard. We used to call Sturt 'the turd'.

I tried to call them turd but I was born with Tourette's so it always came out as campaigner.

Good heavens man, Norwood Tech:eek: That school (for dummies:rolleyes:) was on Kensington Rd. I attended THE Norwood High on Beulah Rd from '58 to '60.:)

They were two quite separate schools.

My first PE teacher played SANFL.

And later neglected his severely disabled adult daughter to death and gargled birdshot mouthwash.

Conclusion: the SANFL is a dangerous rogue organisation that should be eradicated from the face of the earth at the earliest opportunity.

Exactly mate. I went to Hectorville primary, we were all from working class families and then Norwood High which was mostly working class, Italians and greeks, and Adelaide hills kids with a small minority of richer kids. I could've just as easily gone to Morialta or campbelltown high but my older bros were Norwood high so that's where i ended up. My old man was a back hoe operator at the old EWS.

Hahaha that's right "the tech" was for dummies lol. I'm a Norwood high lad too. Norwood high became Kensy tafe and tech became Marryatville High?

They were unlucky to lose the 1973 gf, but maybe they did underachieve after that.
Barrie went down mid 1974 at the SCG in the state game so they never reached great heights again with that 1971-73 group of players. Bohdan Jaworskyj went to Hawthorn in 1973, Neil Sachse to Footscray in 1975 sped up the decline as well. Both were state footballers.
