"RICHMOND appears to have headed off a fan revolt after late last night deciding to give Ben Cousins a second chance.
After a series of meetings and phone calls between Richmond directors, coaches and officials, the club decided to use its only selection in today's pre-season draft to take the fallen champ.

The Herald Sun was told the club finalised its decision after 10pm and some key Richmond players were immediately told.

This came after Cousins' future was again thrown into doubt after the AFL Commission yesterday denied Richmond permission to move the injured Graham Polak to its rookie list, which would have given the Tigers a second draft pick."

hope this is true, hope he can go out with some dignity. Would be great to see Richmond vs Carlton great games of old. Judd vs Cousins wow!

Booya :thumbsu:

Although the headline is a little overstated from the article content...

Richmond football operations manager Craig Cameron last night kept hopes alive of securing Cousins.

"It is not absolutely impossible,'' he told the Herald Sun.

The club would not decide until close to the 10am starting time for the draft.

Cameron initially said it was unlikely Richmond would pick Cousins because the club would probably stick to a strategy of selecting youth. "The decision we have to make has to be a long-term one and shouldn't be based on a swinging public mood.''

Re: Richmond Decide to take Cousins

Common sense prevails.

Still a stupid move by the commission.

it was the correct decision. If they had of allowed it then it would of made a precedent for other clubs to rort the list lodgement dates.

If Richmond want him then they need to take full responsibility for him, the AFL re registered him that was there job done.

Tigers' power play on Ben Cousins backfires

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/sport/afl/story/0,26576,24805759-19742,00.html

RICHMOND has no more than $120,000 to play with under its salary cap for 2009. Which crystalises why it so desperately wanted to move Graham Polak from its senior list to the rookie division.

Had it been successful with the most ambitious part of its submission to the AFL commission, Polak would have had his wage, believed to be about $310,000 base, placed outside the salary cap.

That would have left about $420,000 for two players in today's pre-season draft.

As it stands, with the commission rejecting Richmond's request, the club is now faced with having just $120,000 to accommodate Cousins next year.

Tigers' power play on Ben Cousins backfires

That would have left about $420,000 for two players in today's pre-season draft.

As it stands, with the commission rejecting Richmond's request, the club is now faced with having just $120,000 to accommodate Cousins next year.
In so many respects, the Tigers' handling of the whole Polak/Cousins saga has been embarrassing. The club publicly stated in late November that it was not at all interested in Cousins.

Then, between player drafts, it attempts to exploit the rookie list rules to move Polak off the senior list, in order get an extra selection at the pre-season draft as well as more salary cap room.

And so to the thousands of mouth-frothing Richmond supporters angered by the denial of smooth passage of Ben Cousins, do not, under any circumstance, blame the AFL commission.

Instead, focus your anger on your own club. It was Richmond which didn't properly think this out.

Damian Barrett is on fire. :thumbsu:

The precident should be set. If somebody else is as unlucky as to get hit by a tram, than that's fair enough. If someone faces significant hardship resulting from an incident outside Football, then the club should be free to support that player, and not be disadvantaged by doing so as opposed to cutting them loose.

They bent the rules for Rama, they bent the rules for Melbourne when Troy Broadbridge died. And nobody would argue that those two decisions were wrong.
