It isn’t time for the best captain not be captain so it can’t be time for Ben. It is time for Ben to assume the prime midfield role and dominate games and seasons. It is also time for Ben to belt footballers on the park instead of drunken bums at the pub. What I wouldn’t give for a Darren Millane to be the next captain of Collingwood with the squad we have.

who do you guys reckon is the best candidate to take over from Bucks? my personal opinion is they've left it to late for the likes of Clement and co. most likely Fraser Shaw for mine

Heard Eddie on SEN yesterday. He said Clement could play 3 or 4 more years and might take over from Buckley. Personally I think Fraser will get the gig. Fraser wouldn't be my choice though. Not hard enough for a 2m tall man and not good enough at the primary role he is given. I actually have a bit of a concern about the next captain. I'd be happy with Clement for a year or two. After that Johnson would be ok from an on field perspective but he has limitations off filed. Josh is the oppositite off filed and almost on field if played as the ruckman.

He could captain the club, and be Collingwood's best midfielder.
At the moment he's neither, but I can definitely see him ticking them off as early as next year. He's younger than one or two other potential captains, i.e. James Clement. He's beginning to enter his 'prime years' at the age of 25 (turning 26, if I'm not mistaken). There's plenty going for him; now he needs to stay out of nightclubs at inappropriate times of the night so he doesn't get into any further trouble with the police and/or the law. The onus is on him as of now, he promised to change his lifestyle and I will hold him to his word, I have faith.

I love ben johnson the footballer, he is one of my favs and has been for a few years. But in the modern age he is not a captains bumhole IMO. Captain needs to do alot of work off the feild and Johnno can barely string 2 words together.
Anyone remember his anzac day speech. It was a shocker.

Clement could do it in 08/09 and then we have a few prospects in Fraser/Shaw and if he improves greatly as a footballer Maxwell could have been a chance 3 or 4 years down the track. Although his football ability may limit him.

in three years time, assuming clement is next cab off the rank, would heath shaw not fit the bill?
admittedly he doesn't have anywhere near the mongrel millane had, what he does appear to have 'on field' is detemination, poise and hardness. something that not many of our players have all three of.

What he said. Johnno couldn't be the next captain as he does not have the out-of-footy skills to be a captain in the current football world.

Johnson would be a very good on field leader and premeir midfielder but off field not captain material
the shaw boys could both be captain i see Rhyce slightly ahead of Heath with leadership but Heath seems to be quite vocal on the field so both could do it,
I dont know how fraser and maxwell would go as captain, probably too much pressure for fraser and maxwell still doesnt seem like a leader.

When the time comes i beleive they should choose a younger player probably one of the shaws instead of Clement although i do think clement is an captain.

Nick maxwell has no chance... to be captain of collingwood you need to play good consistent football and lead by example, sure maxwell has guts but he's just not good enough, i still regard him as a fringe player, all of O'brien, Heater, clement, wakes, presty are all much better backmen then he will ever be...Heath shaw is the future of the club!! has guts skill and knows how to handle himself off the field, absolute top bloke and besides he's got collingwood leadership running through his veins

Heath Shaw will captain the Collingwood football club at some stage, no doubt about it.

Fraser has been groomed and will get his chance and Maxwell will be in line too.

Ive always though when it comes time for a decision after Bucks and then Clement goes, Josh capt and Johnno VC was most likely. But Heath Shaw is the bolter. Maxwell should develop into a DVC at best

Early days but I really like what I see with Heath. He’d be the one I’d earmark.

Clement possibly a short term option depending upon what Buckley decides in 2008. If Buckley decides to play on and lead next year, then possibly H Shaw could be a candidate for 2009.

he did that in 06, now has to back it up again and be collingwood's main link man, the bloke who runs and carries the ball all day.
