I think the naming of Ben Johnson this week has been overlooked by most people. Regardless of what you think of him as a footballer, it is commendable that he has only missed one week when early signs were pointing to a reco and lets be honest, possibly his last game of footy. I know in the end it was "just" a dislocated kneecap but to only miss one game is still a great effort.

Good stuff Johnno.

I'm sceptical about whether he will make the field. But def a great effort if he makes it. He's the right inclusion for this game too. He was in good early season form and deserves the re-call if fit.

After watching the Essendon/WCE game tonight, no matter whether BJ comes up for tomorrows game, we need him next week.

We will need his pace to run with and contain some of the pacy Essendon players, just to make sure we win easily this time.

He is more important to us then most understand, as we really do lack pacy small defenders/taggers, and BJ is definitely one of them, as shown by tagging jobs over several years.

I hope he plays tomorrow, but if he isn't right, rest him for next week.

bout a month ago Quicky. ;) :D still having the same thoughts..? :p

This.

People seem to remember Johnson kicking those two important goals and yet failing dismally in his run with role on Vince. Vinces dominance was a big reason we were so far down early in that game. You'd think Johnson was an important goal scoring mid if you looked at that game in isolation, reality is those two goals were two of five he kicked for the year.

FootyGod I see the relevance of Johnson role in the team I just argue that he does it poorly and IMO we have better options. Someone in another thread mentioned that teams were failing to run out games well due the heat and the fact it is round one so maybe it's Johnnos fitness levels that played a big role in his selection today.

I still don't rate him highly as a player but credit where credit is due. He's had a good start to the season and deserves to be in the side based on form if fit. Especially against a Hawks side that we will need to create drive off the HBF to help beat the zone.

I've always been a little let down by bj. After that season and Anzac medal I thought he was gonna be the next big thing... Just could never make that next step.

He is one of the few players in our side that has a bit of pace, can gut run all day and be there for those hand ball receives.

The young fellas may have better skills and are quicker but at this stage they cannot go for the whole game. BJ can. I think is a big reason behind his selection.

I really hope Johnno plays and plays on Rioli.:D

Should be a good game with the Hawks winning by 10 points.

Same thing opposition supporters have been hoping for years, and then having it come true and blow up in their face.

He has a great record against some of the best small forwards and fast mids in the league, yet is constantly written off, by not only opposition supporters like yourself, but also our own supporters.

If BJ plays a defensive role, it will be on Rioli, there is no doubt about that, it's just a matter of whether MM thinks his fitness (knee) is up to a fully defensive job for 4 quarters.

Rioli is a star, but so were Judd, Ablett, Milne, Burgoyne and a few others when Johnson beat them clearly over the years.:thumbsu:

Haha, what is it like living in the magical land of gum drops and bubblegum?

Absolutely deluded, Johnson won't go anywhere near Rioli and if he does, I'd be getting out of the G asap.
He is a terrible shut down defender and he always has been, he was the main culprit of our inability to shut down small forwards (together with Lockyer) in the past. Thank god we rectified it.

Now Johnson has his strengths, but the tripe you just served up Matty didn't go close to touching on any of them.
He is a rebounding defender, who thrives on playing wide of his man. If the opportunity to do so is taken from him, well then he doesn't have a spot in the 22. There's about 10 other blokes on our list I'd prefer doing defensive shut down roles close to goal, or even through the midfield. The absolute pantsing he got from Vince last year was the final straw, I just hope our coaches don't have memories as short as your own.

Johnson has never clearly beaten any of those guys. Seriously, you need to take the blinkers off.

I could argue every point you made, and bring out single game and multi game examples of who and when Johnson beat/restricted, but I simply can't be ****ed.

Simply put though, he is the only player in our current 22 capable of holding a Rioli, as Harry O'Brien will be so torn apart it won't be funny.

Harry couldn't even handle Milne last week, a player Johnson has never had beat him, EVER.

Here I'll do it for you, this is all you 'Johnson as a tagger' supporters ever dish up anyway:
"Yeah, well he was smashing Ablett before he broke his leg so he must be an awesome tagger.... rite?!"

Are you sure you aren't getting them confused? Harry O'Brien is the black guy, the guy who is actually capable of shutting down a dangerous forward, Johnson is the flaky outside flanker who plays 5 metres off his opponent. O'Brien is the one who will go to Rioli, just as he has in the past, the fact you think Johnson will go anywhere near him is laughable.

O'Brien smashed Milne on the weekend, what ****ing game were you watching? O'Brien was our best player, while Milne was completely ineffectual and was constantly under the pump from H whenever he went near the ball.

Puff, puff, pass Matty, you're clearly hogging it all at the moment.

Gotta agree with what invig is saying Matty.
I got no problem with anyone's opinion, but to simply lay personal attacks on me for stating my opinion and for supporting a pies player is ordinary IMO.

I will be disappointed if Harry starts on Rioli, as Harry is more suited to a taller opponent, one he can run off and create attacking plays for us more.

My order for Rioli would be;

1. Johnson (if 100% fit)
2. Toovey
3. Harry
4. we are screwed if it gets this far.

We are looking to restrict him, not stop him completely.

Off to the game, cyas.

Jonhson is too loose to tag anyone I can't remember the last player he actually shut down.

He breaks the lines with his run and that is why I believe he is in the side.

This is why Johnson is in the team. That and he is experienced and stands up in big games. A shut down anything he is not.

I meant in terms of Johnson not you.

Why were you getting drunk before noon?

Anyone who doubts why Jono came straight back into the team tonight... simply didn't watch the game.

Stellar performance - should be recognized by the people who've hunted his head for years.

Be blown away from anyone who calls for him to be dropped again this week.

Top work Jono:thumbsu:

Wasn't bad tonight Jono (in fact he was ****ing goooooodddddd).:D:)

Played every well defensively when given jobs on Rioli, Peterson, and a few others at times of the match, but I'll admit he was better rebounding off half back, and probably had as many inside 50's as anyone on the ground in the first half.

On tonight's performance I admit his best position isn't as a tagger or defensive player, but I still know he can play that role if needed.

Worked very well with Heater tonight, those 2 just love playing next to each other.:thumbsu:
