We’ve had a dreadful record with first round picks for most of this century but Beatson’s record isn’t as bad as what went before him. That said, he’s not had many true choices to make. Mitchell, Heeney and Mills were non decisions.

Jones was a solid choice for where he was taken, and Florent is looking to be a good pick. Lamb was a disappointment, and Towers is a mediocre player but so was most of that draft. Rohan, Jetta and Johnston weren’t exactly home runs, but they were precisely the kind of players needed at the time they were taken.

The really awful run with first round picks - Willoughby, O'Keefe, Veszpremi- pre-dated Beatson's time.

You'd think that his game yesterday would've bumped him up a few spots in the list, but they often go for a young player that has more consistency, as that is often the only difference between players at this age/stage.
