If Chris Davies job was to protect Hinkley at all costs, he did it well.

If Chris Davies job was to make the football club successful, he was an absolutely horrendous GM who oversaw the dismantling of our culture. His record is indefensible.

He started when we had an insane amount of momentum, and then we didn't win a final for 6 years. We then extended the head coach twice more without a GF appearance. He was an arrogant **** every time he was interviewed, completely dismissing criticism and showing contempt for the supporter base.

Rutten is an interesting one.

Seems a likeable guy. Seems a tough, get the most out of yourself sort, no frills, old school tough. Has seen success and rebuilds at Richmond, saw a wide variety of styles at the crows and saw failure and politics at the Dons.

Not as well connected to the vic media and AFL house as I would like but, hopefully, he can draw on some positive connections at Richmond and Essendon.

Will be new to the job, which may be good.

Suspect his style will align well to Carr’s.

I wonder how he will go with list management and overall footy running - there’s a lot there he hasn’t seen or done before.

I did hear some things out of Essendon - ie the player revolt against him. At the time, I thought stay well away. All that said now, with continued BS at the Dons despite coach, board, player, etc change - you have to wonder if it’s less on Rutten and more on the Dons. I suspect his my way or the highway style didn’t fit with the big egos. Perhaps Rutten had also learned and improved from this.

Overall, we have a ruthless HC and two key support staff (Rutten and Dee), who have a very tough, uncompromising style that hasn’t always won fans at their club. It’s something they’ll all have to be aware of and to ensure players are still happy and comfortable at the club. Having the right other assistants, welfare and support staff will be key. You can be a tough, ruthless bastard, as long as you have the right people smoothing it out for you.

How does one arrive at this? During Hinkley's tenure - only us and the Suns failed to make a GF.

Brisbane - 3 x GF's for 2 flags.
West Coast - 2 x GF's for a flag
Sydney - 4 x GF's
Freo - 1 x GF
GWS - 1 x GF
Adelaide - 1 x GF.

Impossible - far from it. Hopefully this new regime cuts through all the excuses and accept that making a GF and winning a flag is more than possible, with the right attitude and decision making.
I think the suggestion was clubs that don’t have a leg up from the AFL. So no northern academies, no home ground advantage at the G, etc.

So that’s Freo, West coast, Port and the crows. Last 25 years has seen those four sides make 7 GFs, for 3 wins, only one of which was against a Victorian side.

So Rucci said as per the link to his segment yesterday in the Carr thread, that Paul Stewart had been doing the acting GM job with respect to the admin and paper work for trades and other issues around contracts and lodgement of stuff with the AFL for end of season purposes, in between CD leaving and Rutten getting stuck into his role soon.

Richo would have stepped up as would have Cripps and covered some of the stuff CD was doing.
Why get an ex footballer in to do admin?

Will we hire a lawyer to play half back next season?

6 years from the end of 2014 takes us to the end of 2020.

1. By the end of 2020 we had an exciting list including the Brownlow runner up, 3 players in the AA team with a 20 year old Butters in the AA squad. Young exciting players with a strong base to build from.
.....
This can not be true because everyone knows that poor Kenny never had the list and overachieved with the complete potatoes that were forced on him.

Is it easier to teach someone with thorough knowledge of the AFL industry from a football perspective how to do admin or to teach an administrator with very little to no knowledge of the AFL industry from a football perspective and no real understanding or personal experience of what it takes to be successful in a professional sporting organisation those things?

I agree, why get an ex footballer that doesnt have any sport or business management training to do sports/business mangement. Much better to get a lawyer with no sports knowledge to do it. (FWIW, all player contracts and the like do go through lawyers).

'Cherry picked the first six years'. lol. How unfair of me to judge someone for his performance in the first six years of his tenure at a new workplace.

Taken out of context. I would expect nothing less. However, I will give that all due consideration from the man who insists that we did not win a final in 2020

2020 minus 2014 is 6, is it not? I said 6 years, not 6 seasons.

In my defence, I kept Michael Wilson out of the rover’s position…in under 9s. That may have been my football peak
